Bio

Green Day is an American rock band that combined the raw power of punk with melodic pop sensibility, creating songs that perfectly captured the angst-ridden restlessness of American adolescents in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The band’s founding members include Billie Joe Armstrong (born February 17, 1972, in Rodeo, California, United States), Mike Dirnt (real name Michael Ryan Pritchard; born May 4, 1972, in Berkeley), and Tré Cool (real name Frank Edwin Wright III; born December 9, 1972, in Willits, California). John Kiffmeyer, who went by the name Al Sobrante, was also a member of the band.

Armstrong and Dirnt met while attending elementary school in Crockett, California, and bonded over their shared love of classic punk bands such as the Ramones and the Dead Kennedys. They formed their first band, Sweet Children, in 1987, along with drummer Sean Hughes.

Hughes was subsequently replaced by Sobrante, a member of the local organisation Isocracy, who was elected to the position. Sweet Children quickly rose to prominence as a live group in the San Francisco Bay region, where they still perform today. After renaming themselves Green Day, the trio produced an album in 1989 called 39/Smooth, which was released by local label Lookout Records under the new name of the band (it was eventually repackaged as part of the band’s 1991 release, 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours). Soon after, Sobrante was replaced by Tré Cool, a drummer from the Mendocino Mountains in California who had been a member of the punk band the Lookouts since he was 12 years old and had been performing in the band since then.

A cult following developed for Green Day, and the band gained a footing in California’s developing punk revival movement, of which they were one of the primary motors. Lookout Records published the band’s second album, Kerplunk (1992), but the record garnered interest from larger firms, notably Reprise Records, who released Green Day’s major-label debut, Dookie (1994), as well as a number of other labels. Armstrong’s indifferent lyrics and the band’s infectious pop-punk style were brought into the mainstream with the album, which earned them a Grammy Award for best alternative music performance and sold more than 15 million copies worldwide.

Following Dookie, Green Day’s next two albums, Insomniac (1997) and Nimrod (1998), performed well financially but failed to equal the band’s breakthrough success, and Warning (2000) signalled the beginning of the band’s decline in popularity. After taking a four-year hiatus from the recording studio, Green Day returned with the stylistic experiment American Idiot (2004), a politically charged album with operatic scale and a political message. With this massively popular record, Green Day melded the broad political criticism of their punk forefathers with the heated personal observations of their own earlier albums, achieving unexpected relevance and critical praise. American Idiot was released in 2005 and went on to win the Grammy Award for best rock album. It has sold over 12 million copies worldwide. Furthermore, a track from the album, “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2006 for best rock song of the year.

In 2009, a rock opera based on the album was staged in a theatre in Berkeley, California, with music composed from the album’s songs as the score.

The musical American Idiot, which depicted the fruitless efforts of a trio of teenagers to escape the conventional life of their parents’ suburb, made a triumphant transfer to Broadway the following year, garnering rave reviews and two Tony Awards, for scenic design and lighting design of a musical, respectively. In addition, the Broadway cast recording was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2011.

Green Day got a second Grammy Award for best rock album for 21st Century Breakdown (2009), which was yet another grandiose song cycle by the band Green Day. A trilogy of albums—Uno!, Dos!, and Tre!—followed in 2012, with the band reverting to the high-energy immediacy of its punk beginnings but also taking influence from the band’s classic-rock foremothers and forefathers. Revolution Radio (2016), Green Day’s follow-up album, was a more concentrated return to the band’s origins. The soundtrack of Father of All… (2020) was a homage to garage music. This past year, the band was officially admitted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
