Graham Norton Bio

Irish comedian, actor, author, and television host Graham William Walker, better known by his stage name Graham Norton, was born on April 4, 1963. He is best known for his work in the United Kingdom, where he is best known for his roles as Graham Norton. He has won the British Academy Television Award for Best Entertainment Performance three times, making him a total of eight-time winner.

He has won the award for his comic chat program The Graham Norton Program (2007–present) five times, making him a BAFTA TV Award winner five times. His show So Graham Norton (2000–2002) has won him the award three times. His talk show, which was initially broadcast on BBC Two before shifting to other times on BBC One, took over the famous late-Friday-evening time slot on BBC One in 2010, succeeding Friday Night with Jonathan Ross.

Norton was the host of the Saturday morning program on BBC Radio 2 from the years 2010 through 2020. In 2021, he started doing shows on Virgin Radio UK on the weekends (Saturdays and Sundays). He has been working as a television analyst for the Eurovision Song Contest for the BBC ever since the year 2009. His discourse is notorious for being rife with innuendo, and his presentation is renowned for its flamboyance.

Prior to establishing himself as a presenter, Norton played Father Noel Furlong in three episodes of the Channel 4 sitcom Father Ted, which was nominated for several awards and won a number of them. ITV acquired his production firm, So Television, in 2012 for close to £17 million when he sold it to ITV. In 2019, he was invited to join the judging panel for RuPaul’s Drag Race UK. Paula, his older sister, is his older sibling.

He has stated that his upbringing in a Protestant (Church of Ireland) household in the town of Bandon, County Cork, caused him to feel somewhat lonely during his formative years. His paternal grandparents hailed from the county of Wicklow, while his mother was born and raised in the Northern Irish city of Belfast. During an episode of the genealogy series Who Do You Think You Are? that aired in 2007, he learned that his father’s immediate ancestors were English and that they had started in Yorkshire before migrating to Ireland in 1713. This information was revealed to him by his father.

Norton received his education in County Cork at Bandon Grammar School and then continued his education at University College Cork, where he spent two years studying English and French in the 1980s. However, he was unable to finish his education after suffering a mental breakdown and refusing to leave his apartment. After some time had passed, the institution awarded him an honorary doctorate in the year 2013. He traveled to London in the late 1980s in order to study speech and drama at the Central School of Speech and Drama.

During that period, he also had a job working as a waiter. After he joined the actors’ union Equity, he decided to change his surname to Norton, which was his great-grandmother’s maiden name. He did this because there was already an actor with the name Graham Walker who was represented by the union. In 1992, Norton’s stand-up comedy drag act as a tea-towel-clad Mother Teresa of Calcutta at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe made the press when the religious affairs department of Scottish Television thought he represented the actual Mother Teresa.

This led to Norton receiving a great deal of attention. His first performances in broadcasting were in the United Kingdom, where he held a position as a regular comedian and panelist on the show Loose Ends aired on BBC Radio 4 in the early 1990s. At that time, the show aired on Saturday mornings. One of the early people to find success on Channel 5, he won an award for his work as a substitute host on a late-night television chat program that was typically hosted by Jack Docherty.

This was followed by a humorous quiz show on Channel 5 called Bring Me the Head of Light Entertainment, which was not well accepted as a program but boosted Norton’s image as a comic and presenter. Although the show was not well received, Norton’s profile as a comic and host increased. In 1996, he and Maria McErlane were the hosts of the late-night quiz show Carnal Knowledge, which was shown on ITV.

In 1996, Edward Norton appeared as Father Noel Furlong in three episodes (“Hell”, “Flight into Terror”, and “The Mainland”) of the Channel 4 television series Father Ted, which was filmed on the fictitious Craggy Island located off the coast of Ireland. It was not uncommon to find Father Furlong directing the activities of the St. Luke’s Youth Group.

After achieving such early success, Graham Norton went to Channel 4 in 1998 to host his own chat programs, the first of which was the weekly So Graham Norton (which aired from 1998 until 2002), and the second of which was the daily nighttime show V Graham Norton (which aired from 2002 until 2003). It was in this setting that Norton’s act as a cheeky, innuendo-filled joker was brought to its full maturity. Norton is a performer who is not only outwardly gay , but also camp and flamboyant.

In 2003, he was the topic of controversy in the United Kingdom after making a comical reference on his show that aired on Channel 4 to the recent passing of Bee Gees vocalist Maurice Gibb. This caused him to become the focus of controversy. The Independent Television Commission conducted an investigation after receiving complaints about the show’s insensitivity, and in the end, Channel 4 was required to issue two apologies: the first was in the form of a caption slide shown before the show, and the second was personally delivered by Norton.

In the same year, 2003, Norton was included on a list compiled by The Observer that ranked the 1,000 funniest acts in the history of British comedy. (Despite the fact that Norton is of Irish descent, the majority of his television career has been spent in the United Kingdom). The publication Radio Times acknowledged him as the most influential figure in television comedy in January of 2004.

During the summer of 2004, Norton debuted his first show on an American television network. The Graham Norton Effect made its debut on June 24, 2004, on Comedy Central. In the United Kingdom, the show was simultaneously broadcast on BBC Three. Norton was hesitant to enter the market because of the controversy that surrounded Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson’s performances during the Super Bowl.
