The Italian actriz and professional photographer, Gina Lollobrigida, by name of Luigina Lollobrigida, whose earthy sensuality served to establish her worldwide cinema in the 1950’s and 60’s. She married Milko Škofič, a Slovenian physicist in 1949. Andrea Milko, born on 28 July 1957, has one kid. Škofič has abandoned medical practise to become her manager. In 1971 they divorced.
In 1969, she worked for George Kaufman, a New York property heir for a brief period. In the 1960s she also had an affair with the South African doctor Christiaan Barnard, who was a pioneer in cardiac transplantation.
In October 2006, at the age of 79, she announced her engagement to Javier Rigau y Rafols, a 45-year-old Spanish businessman, in the Spanish magazine Hola! They met at a Monte Carlo party in 1984 and have been friends ever since. The commitment was stopped on 6 December 2006, allegedly due of the pressures on the media.
Lollobrigida’s father was a furniture manufacturer in Subiaco, but the family relocated to Rome during the Second World War. Her modelling career under the name Diana Loris helped bring her to the notice of Italian filmmakers, albeit she studied painting and sculpting. She also won a number of European beauty competitions before her debut movie appearance in Aquila nera.
Lollobrigida’s first roles were minor, but in 1949 she started to play major parts and her cinematic position in Europe was fixed in the early 1950s. Well-applauded across the Continent as La Lollo, the French Swashbuckler Fanfan la Tulipe attracted worldwide notice for the first time (1952). She makes her film début in English alongside Humphrey Bogart and Jennifer Jones in John Huston’s Beat the Devil (1953).
The other noteworthy films of Lollobrigida were La Donna più beautiful del mondo (1955) and Carol Reed’s Trapeze (1956). In 1961 Lollobrigida performed in the romantic comedy Come September with Rock Hudson. She was subsequently praised by Mrs. Campbell for her performance in the comedy Buona Sera (1968).
After 1970 Lollobrigida’s film career stalled and she turned to successful careers as a photographer and manager of the cosmetics company. However, she did infrequent movie and television shows in the 1980s and 1990s, including in 1984 in the Falcon Crest TV series. She also works as a sculptor in the 21st century.
In 1950, Howard Hughes asked Lollobrigida to work in Hollywood but refused to live in Europe; this choice prohibited her from acting in American films made in the United States until 1959 but not in U.S. films shot in Europe. Her work in Bread, Love and Dreams (Pane, amore e fantasia, 1953) resulted in a BAFTA appointment and a Nastro d’Argento prize.
The Wayward Wife (1953) and the Woman of Rome both featured Lollobrigida (1954). She has also been working on Foreless Little Soldier (Fanfan la Tulipe, 1952), Beauties of the Night (Les Belles de nuit, 1952) and Le Grand Jeu in the French industry (1954).
Her first widespread movie in English was Beat the Devil (1953), an Italian film. She portrayed in this movie, directed by John Huston, Humphrey Bogart’s wife, with Jennifer Jones as its competitor. She next participated in Crossed Swords (1954), the Italian-American production, co-starring Errol Flynn.
Her performance in The World’s Beautiful Woman (also known as Beautiful But Dangerous, 1955), caused her to get the inaugural prize of David di Donatello as Best Actress; she played Italian singer, Lina Cavalieri, in this film, with her own voice singing several Tuscan arias.
She starred as one of the major female characters in the cirque drama Trapeze (1956), directed by Carol Reed and starring Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis, as well as playing Esmeralda opposite Anthony Quinn in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1956).
She launched a court suit against Javier Rigau y Rafols in January 2013, alleging that her ex-friend had organised a covert ceremony in which he “married” an impostor saying that he was her at the Barcelona register. She stated that after her death he planned to lay claim to her inheritance.
Lollobrigida accused Rigau of fraud and said he had before received the lawyer’s authority to act on her behalf and exercised the plan to acquire more power. “A time back he persuaded me to grant him my attorney authority. For certain legal issues, he required it. But instead I’m afraid he’s taken advantage of not understanding the Spanish language… who knows what he’s signed me.” She lost her legal case in March 2017, but claimed she would appeal.
Now retired, since 1997 Lollobrigida hasn’t produced a movie. In April 2000, she told PARADE: “I studied painting and sculpture at school and by accident became an actor… I had plenty of boyfriends and still had romances. I am extremely pampered. I am highly privileged. I’ve had too many fans throughout my life.”
Lollobrigida has been living at her home ranch and gardens in Sicily since 1949. The property has its own museum. She lives at her home in Via Appia Antica in Rome and at a villa in Monte Carlo on a regular basis. Lollobrigida has not permitted guests to her house since 2009.
Lollobrigida sold her collection of jewels to Sotheby in 2013. She spent about $5 million on stem cell treatment. In the third person, Lollobrigida has the tendency of referring to herself.
