Bio

Giannis Antetokounmpo is a Greek professional basketball player, often referred to as “The Greek Freak.” He was born on December 6, 1994, in Athens, Greece, to Nigerian immigrant parents. Antetokounmpo began playing basketball as a young child, and by the age of 18, he was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round of the 2013 NBA draft.

Antetokounmpo quickly made a name for himself in the NBA with his unique blend of size, speed, and athleticism. He has won numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including two NBA MVP awards, one NBA Defensive Player of the Year award, and several All-NBA and All-Defensive team selections. In addition, he led the Milwaukee Bucks to their first NBA championship in 50 years in 2021, earning himself the Finals MVP award.

Off the court, Antetokounmpo is known for his philanthropy and dedication to giving back to his community. He has established the “Giannis Foundation” to support underserved youth in Greece and the United States, and he regularly participates in charitable events and initiatives.

His parents arrived in the nation in 1991 from Nigeria. Prior to migration, his parents entrusted the care of their eldest kid, Francis, to his grandparents.Giannis also has an older brother named Thanasis and two younger brothers named Kostas and Alexis. Giannis and three of his brothers were not eligible for Greek citizenship despite their birth in Greece. Indeed, even after attaining the age of 18, he remained a stateless individual, as he lacked both Greek and Nigerian citizenship.

He recalls his parents striving mightily to make ends meet and support an eight-person family. On most days, he and his older brother, Thanasis, would report to practise on a near-empty stomach in a field near the family’s humble home in Sepolia.

According to a club teacher, a 13-year-old Giannis and his brother were more interested in playing football than dribbling a basketball. The boys were unable to interact freely with other children in their area and with locals during their formative years, constantly fearful of being deported by the authorities.

Spiros Velliniatis, the club coach who coached other children in the Sepolia neighbourhood, saw that though Giannis was not particularly gifted at basketball, he possessed the mental fortitude and dedication necessary to succeed in the sport. In an interview, Antetokounmpo stated that the true credit for his achievement and meteoric climb to popularity should be given to Velliniatis.

Panagiotis Zivach, the then-Filathlitikos coach, recalls attracting the boys to regular basketball training sessions by promising to find job for their parents. Giannis Tzikas, a neighbouring restaurant, joined in by making meals for the children so they could rehearse on a full stomach.

Giannis and Thanasis began practising basketball in 2007 after Zivas, Filathlitikos’ general manager, supported their parents in finding work. He also provided financial assistance to the brothers in order for them to fulfil their commitments to the basketball club.

Later in life, the family relocated to a neighbourhood near Filathlitikos, making it extremely accessible for Giannis to exercise routinely. After two years of practise, Giannis was picked to join Filathlitikos’ young team in 2009, kicking off his professional career. Giannis Antetokounmpo played with Filathlitikos’ youth team for three years, from 2009 to 2012. He excelled in every facet of the game and assisted his team in winning multiple matches. He scored 50 points in one game, attracting the attention of several managers from Europe’s best basketball clubs.

Antetokounmpo joined Filathlitikos’ senior squad in 2012, playing for the team in the Greek A2 Basket League in 2012-13. In December of the same year, CAI Zaragoza, a Spanish team, signed him to a four-year contract that included an NBA buyout clause for each season.

His deal with CAI Zaragoza was scheduled to begin in 2013-14. He averaged 9.5 points, 1.0 block, 1.4 assists, and 5.0 rebounds in at least 26 games during the 2012-13 Greek A2 League playoffs. In 2013, he was selected as a single participant for the ‘Greek League All-Star Game.’

He appeared in 77 games with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2013-14, averaging 6.8 points per game. He finished the season as the NBA’s leading rookie with 61 blocks, qualifying him for the NBA All-Star Weekend’s ‘Rising Stars Challenge’ in New Orleans.

His outstanding performance in the ‘Rising Stars Challenge’ playoff earned him a spot on the NBA All-Rookie second team, which consists of five players. Additionally, the Milwaukee Bucks extended Antetokounmpo’s contract for two further seasons, 2014-15 and 2015-16. His average peaked at 27 points during his debut season.

On February 9, 2015, he got his first ‘player of the week’ recognition and was named the ‘Eastern Conference Player’ for his outstanding performance in fixtures between February 2nd and 8th. He also competed in the NBA All-Star Weekend’s Slam Dunk Contest, which was held in New York that year.
