Giannis Antetokounmpo is a Greek professional basketball player, often referred to as “The Greek Freak.” He was born on December 6, 1994, in Athens, Greece, to Nigerian immigrant parents. Spiros Velliniatis, the club coach who coached other children in the Sepolia neighbourhood, saw that though Giannis was not particularly gifted at basketball, he possessed the mental fortitude and dedication necessary to succeed in the sport. In an interview, Antetokounmpo stated that the true credit for his achievement and meteoric climb to popularity should be given to Velliniatis.
Panagiotis Zivach, the then-Filathlitikos coach, recalls attracting the boys to regular basketball training sessions by promising to find job for their parents. Giannis Tzikas, a neighbouring restaurant, joined in by making meals for the children so they could rehearse on a full stomach.
Giannis and Thanasis began practising basketball in 2007 after Zivas, Filathlitikos’ general manager, supported their parents in finding work. He also provided financial assistance to the brothers in order for them to fulfil their commitments to the basketball club.
Later in life, the family relocated to a neighbourhood near Filathlitikos, making it extremely accessible for Giannis to exercise routinely. Giannis qualified for the NBA draught for the 2013-14 season on 28 April 2013. He was drafted in the first round, ranking 15th overall among all eligible Milwaukee Bucks draftees. On 13 July 2013, he was signed as a new recruit by the Bucks.
He appeared in 77 games with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2013-14, averaging 6.8 points per game. He finished the season as the NBA’s leading rookie with 61 blocks, qualifying him for the NBA All-Star Weekend’s ‘Rising Stars Challenge’ in New Orleans.
