Gerard James Butler was born on November 13, 1969, in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, to Margaret and Edward Butler, a bookmaker. He is the youngest of three children and the youngest of three sons. His ancestors are of Irish origin and are descended from a Catholic family. At six months of age, Butler’s family relocated to Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Butler was born in Montreal. Following the breakdown of his parent’s marriage a year later, Gerard’s mother left Quebec and returned to Scotland with Gerard, who was then 18 months old.
Butler attended Paisley’s St Mirin’s and St Margaret’s High School, where he was head boy, and went on to study law at the University of Glasgow School of Law. As a teenager, he also participated in the Scottish Youth Theatre. After that, Butler did not see his father until he was 16 years old when Edward Butler called and asked him to meet him at a restaurant in Glasgow. Butler sobbed uncontrollably for several hours following the meeting and later said, “That experience taught me how much grief can reside in this body of yours; pain and sorrow that you don’t realize you have until it is unleashed.
” Butler served as President of the university legal society during his time as a student, a post he subsequently said he “sort of blagged my way into.” Butler’s father was diagnosed with cancer when he was 22 years old and died as a result. “I had gone from being a 16-year-old who couldn’t wait to get his hands on life to being a 22-year-old who didn’t give a damn if he died in his sleep,” he reflected on this point in his life. Butler took a year off from law school before entering his final year. He spent the year living in California.
He spent the majority of his time in Venice Beach, working at a variety of jobs, traveling frequently, and, according to him, drinking regularly, to the point of being arrested for disorderly behavior connected to alcohol. He reflected on his actions and words over the year, recalling that “The fact that I was losing control was justified by the notion that ‘I was young, and this was life.’ “This is just me being obnoxious,” says the author.” Following his time in the United States, he returned to Scotland to complete his final year of law school there.
Butler underwent ear surgery when he was a child, which resulted in his having a damaged ear as a result. He still has tinnitus and hearing loss in his right ear, which is a result of the surgery. Butler began acting in the mid-1990s after completing a law degree. He appeared in films such as Mrs. Brown (1997), the James Bond thriller Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), and Tale of the Mummy (1998), all of which received modest roles (1998). In 2000, he co-starred with Christopher Plummer and Jonny Lee Miller in the gothic horror thriller Dracula 2000, in which he played Count Dracula.
The following year, he appeared in the miniseries Attila (2001) and the films Reign of Fire (2002, with Christian Bale) and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003, with Angelina Jolie), before starring as André Marek in the Timeline adaptation of Michael Crichton’s science fiction adventure novel Timeline (2005). (2003). After that, he was cast in the part of Erik, The Phantom, in Joel Schumacher’s 2004 film adaptation of the musical The Phantom of the Opera, which he co-starred in with Emmy Rossum as the Phantom.
He was nominated for a Satellite Award for Best Actor for his performance in that role. With his role of King Leonidas in Zack Snyder’s fantasy battle film 300, Butler received widespread international acclaim. In recognition of his performance, he was nominated for an Empire Award for Best Actor and a Saturn Award for Best Actor, and he was also awarded the MTV Movie Award for Best Fight for his performance. Between 2010 and 2019, he was known for his role as Stoick the Vast in the critically acclaimed and economically successful How to Train Your Dragon trilogy.
Additionally, he starred as Secret Service agent Mike Banning in the action thriller series Olympus Has Fallen, London Has Fallen, Angel Has Fallen, and the impending Night Has Fallen, all of which were set in the decade of 2010. A modern rendition of Shakespeare’s tragedy of the same name, Coriolanus, was released in 2011. He also appeared as Sam Childers in the action biography Machine Gun Preacher, which was released that same year, and he has been in several other films.
When he graduated, he was hired by an Edinburgh law firm to work as a trainee lawyer in their corporate litigation department. He, on the other hand, continued to drink late into the night and was regularly absent from work as a result. He was sacked just a week before he was to be admitted to the bar as an attorney. Butler traveled to London when he was 25 years old, despite the fact that he was not a trained lawyer. He wanted to follow his ambition of becoming renowned.
He recognized that he was wrong “In the beginning, I’m not sure I was in it for the right reasons, but things have changed since then. I had a strong desire to become well-known.” After failing to land any acting roles at first, he tried his hand at a variety of other occupations, including waiter, telemarketer, and a toy demonstration at trade shows and conventions. While in London, he ran across an old acquaintance from his days as a teenager in the Scottish Youth Theatre, who happened to be working as a casting director in the city. His role at the time was dual: he was her boyfriend as well as her helper. She took him to an audition for the play Coriolanus, directed by Steven Berkoff. According to the director’s comments about Butler’s audition.
Butler’s first professional acting gig came when he was 27 years old. A little more than a year later, he was cast in a stage production of the film Trainspotting, which he played at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland. Butler relocated to Los Angeles when he was 30 years old, where he landed roles in films such as Dracula 2000, Tomb Raider 2, Dear Frankie, and Phantom of the Opera.
After moving to London, Butler worked at a variety of odd jobs before being cast in a theatre production of Coriolanus by actor and director Steven Berkoff (who would later feature alongside him in Attila (2001)). He was cast as Renton, the character played by Ewan McGregor in the stage adaption of Trainspotting, the same play that had motivated him to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.
Mrs. Brown was his feature film debut, in which he played the younger sibling of Billy Connolly’s character (1997). After that, he proceeded to appear in films with modest roles, first in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) and then in Russell Mulcahy’s Tale of the Mummy (2000). (1998). Butler had his debut in two parts in 2000, the first of which was Attila the Hun in the American television miniseries Attila the Hun (2001). Butler was cast in the role after the producers were unsuccessful in their search for a well-known actor to play the role.
He was cast in the role of Dracula in the film Dracula 2000. (2000). Later, alongside Angelina Jolie, he starred in Reign of Fire (2002) as Creedy and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003) as Terry Sheridan in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. Butler starred as Andre Marek in the film version of Michael Crichton’s novel Timeline (2003), in which he played an archaeologist who was transported back in time with a group of students to save a colleague.
In 2003, when director Joel Schumacher was deciding on the principal casting for the film The Phantom of the Opera, a film adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical of the same name, he thought of Butler, who he had previously seen in the film Dracula 2000, to play the title character. Butler was cast in the role. Butler, who had no previous musical experience other than singing in a rock band while studying to be a lawyer, was taken aback by the interest, but he quickly signed up for singing lessons with a voice coach to learn the basics of the craft.
His performance impressed both Schumacher and Lloyd Webber, who invited him to do acting auditions with them. Both were impressed by his performance and offered him a role. Butler’s performance in the film, as well as the film itself, got mixed reviews, though Butler was nominated for a Satellite Award for Best Actor for his efforts. Due to the popularity of his role as Spartan King Leonidas and the use of his lines during sports events at Michigan State University, he was invited to attend their Midnight Madness and homecoming American football games on the 15th and 16th of October, respectively.
During the course of filming Playing for Keeps, Butler was writing songs and was in the midst of recording an album, which was released in August 2011. He denied rumors that Marilyn Manson and Johnny Depp had advised him on the project, which had surfaced in the media. Butler was taken to the hospital on the 18th of December that year while filming Chasing Mavericks after being dragged under large waves. Following that, he was transported to Stanford University Medical Center, where he was eventually released.
On the big screen, Butler appeared as Secret Service agent Mike Banning in the action film Olympus Has Fallen (2013), in which he appeared with Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman. It was discovered afterward that he had broken two bones in his neck during shooting the picture, but he had not been aware of it until he had an MRI scan. Butler returned to the character of Stoick in How to Train Your Dragon 2, which was released in 2014.
Butler appeared in the film Hunter Killer, in which he played submarine skipper Commander Joe Glass of the USS Arkansas, a Virginia-class nuclear submarine, at the end of 2018. In the upcoming 2019 film Angel Has Fallen, he reprised his role as Mike Banning. Butler will appear in Greenland in the fall of 2020, following release delays caused by COVID-19. Since 2011, he has been a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, where he is a member of the Actors Branch.
Butler has been a supporter of Mary’s Meals organization since its inception in 2010. In 2014, he traveled to Liberia to see the work of an international development charity’s program there. Butler attended a fundraising dinner organized by Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) in 2018, which raised a total of $60 million for the Israeli military. Butler’s home in California was completely destroyed by the Woolsey Fire, which occurred in November 2018.
