George Saunders Bio

George Saunders was born on December 2, 1958, in the city of Amarillo, Texas. He was raised in the Chicago area and received his high school education at Oak Forest High School. After that, he went to the Colorado School of Mines in nearby Golden to major in geophysical engineering.

Saunders earned a Master of Arts in creative writing from Syracuse University. A number of years later, Saunders instructed institute students on the same topic. American author George Saunders has won a number of awards for his work in a variety of genres, including short stories, novellas, novels, and children’s books. His piece, “American Psyche,” appeared in “The Guardian” on a weekly basis in the late aughts. He has published numerous collections of short stories, for which he is much acclaimed.

His short story collection, “Tenth of December: Stories,” was awarded the 2014 Folio Prize. Before winning the Booker Prize for Fiction in 2017 for his novel “Lincoln in the Bardo,” Saunders got numerous acclaim. In addition to ‘Harper’s,’ ‘The New Yorkers,’ and ‘GQ,’ Saunders has had work published in ‘GQ,’ ‘The New Yorker,’ and ‘Harper’s.’ In addition to his writing, he has also served as a professor at New York’s Syracuse University. He was known for his innovative approach to the teaching of creative writing.

George Saunders was a geophysical engineer and technical writer for Radian International before becoming a professor at Syracuse University. He guided the kids in their imaginative writing. While on faculty at Syracuse University, Saunders began penning works of fiction. His stories appeared in periodicals frequently. Around the middle of the ’90s, he began penning novellas.

In 1996, he released a collection of short stories and novellas titled CivilWarLand in Bad Decline. That same year, he was also among the award’s PEN/Hemingway Award finalists. His collection of short stories and novellas named Pastoralia became a bestseller in the year 2000. His collection of short stories, titled “In Persuasion Nation,” was published in 2006 and was a finalist for The Story Prize.

Saunders’s ‘Tenth of December: Stories’ is a best-seller and widely regarded as one of his finest collections of short fiction. In 2013 and 2014, he took home the Story Prize and the Folio Prize, respectively. The book was named the best book of 2013 by “The New York Times Magazine” and was among the top five best-sellers on The New York Times Hardcover Fiction Bestselling List.

George Saunders’s ‘Lincoln in the Bardo’ was recognized as the best novel of 2017 by the Man Booker Prize judges. On the review aggregator Bookmarks, the book garnered a total of 42 ratings, with only three giving it a less-than-glowing assessment. Almost all reviewers agreed that Saunders had created a masterpiece with this book. George Saunders is the proud father of two beautiful girls, Caitlin and Alena, with his wife Paula Redick.

In 2006, Saunders was awarded both a MacArthur Fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He joined the Academy of Arts and Letters in 2018 after being selected for membership. George Saunders moved to Illinois as a child after being born in Texas in 1958. Before winning the 2017 Booker Prize for his debut novel, Lincoln in the Bardo, he was already well-known as a short story writer, having published four collections since 1996 and picking up a number of honors along the way.

Both the Guggenheim and the MacArthur Foundation granted him, fellowships, in 2006. Twenty years of experience teaching a creative writing course on the Russian short story in translation at Syracuse University informed his most recent book, A Swim in a Pond in the Rain. This interview with Saunders took done through Zoom while he was in the midst of a snowfall in upstate New York, where he resides.

In 1983, he was in Indonesia when he got sick from eating too much street food and had to return to the United States. He worked as a knuckle puller in a slaughterhouse, a clerk in a convenience store, and a guitarist. After reading Stuart Dybek’s short stories, he realized that writing may be a viable career option. He earned his master’s degree in creative writing from Syracuse in 1988. The professors had doubts about him because of his limited exposure to literature. From 1989 through 1996, he contributed to the environmental sector as a technical writer for the New York-based Radian Corporation. He published his first collection of short stories, CivilWarLand in Bad Decline, in 1996 during his spare time at work. For this piece, he was shortlisted for the PEN/Hemingway Award.

In 1997, he began teaching in Syracuse University’s Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program. He never stopped working on stories or attending classes at the University. His fiction has been regularly featured in The New Yorker since 1992. In addition to contributing to The Guardian on weekends, he wrote for Harper’s, McSweeney’s, Esquire, American Psyche, and The Guardian.

Both his children’s book A Very Persistent Gappers of Frip and his short story collection Pastoralia was published in 2000. In Persuasion Nation, a collection of short stories was released in 2006 and was a finalist for the Story Prize. His best-known work, Tenth of December, was released in 2013 and has since been nominated for several prestigious literary prizes. It was chosen as a National Book Award finalist and as one of The New York Times Book Review’s top 10 books of 2013.
