On May 6, 1961, George Timothy Clooney was born in Lexington, Kentucky, to Nina Bruce (née Warren), a former beauty pageant queen, and Nick Clooney, a former anchorman and television personality. His father, Nick Clooney, was also a former beauty pageant queen (who was also the brother of singer Rosemary Clooney).
His heritage may be traced back to Ireland, England, and Germany. Clooney spent the most of his childhood in Ohio and Kentucky, where he received his high school diploma from Augusta. He participated in several sports, including basketball and baseball, and even tried out for the Cincinnati Reds, but the team did not give him a contract to play for them.
Following his cousin Miguel Ferrer’s success in landing him a little part in a major film, Clooney decided to pursue a career in acting. On the comedy E.R. (1984), he had his first significant appearance as Ace. Soon after, he was cast in further parts, such as the dashing handyman George Burnett on The Facts of Life (1979), Booker Brooks, a supervisor on Roseanne (1988), and Detective James Falconer on Sisters (1991).
The role of Dr. Doug Ross on the critically acclaimed and Emmy-winning television drama series ER (1994), in which Clooney starred alongside Anthony Edwards, Noah Wyle, and Julianna Margulies, was the turning point in Clooney’s career. During the time when ER (1994) was being filmed, George Clooney appeared in a number of high-profile film roles.
Including Robert Rodriguez’s From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) and One Fine Day (1996), in which he was paired with Michelle Pfeiffer. In 1997, Clooney portrayed Batman in the film Batman & Robin, which was directed by Joel Schumacher (1997). The movie was only a modest success when it came to box office receipts, but it was panned by reviewers, most notably for the batsuit’s nipple-laden design.
After that, Clooney went on to feature in films such as Out of Sight (1998), directed by Steven Soderbergh, The Thin Red Line (1998), directed by Terrence Malick, and Three Kings (1998), directed by David O. Russell (1999). Although he would return for the series finale of “ER” (1994), George Clooney departed the show in 1999 and went on to star in a number of films, such as “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” (2000), “The Perfect Storm” (2000), and “Ocean’s Eleven” (2000).
Ocean’s Eleven (2001), which was directed by Steven Soderbergh once again and garnered positive reviews, grossed more than $450 million at the box office, and was successful enough to inspire the production of two sequels: Ocean’s Twelve (2004) and Ocean’s Thirteen (2005). It was in 2002 that Clooney made his debut as a filmmaker with the film Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002), which was an adaptation of the autobiography of TV producer Chuck Barris.
This was the first movie that he directed under the umbrella of Section Eight Productions, a production firm that he and Steven Soderbergh established. In addition, the firm was responsible for the production of a large number of critically praised films, some of which are titled Far from Heaven (2002), Syriana (2005), A Scanner Darkly (2006), and Good Night, and Good Luck (2006).
Clooney was nominated for an Academy Award in the categories of Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for his work on the film Good Night, and Good Luck. He took home his first Oscar for his role as the Best Supporting Actor in the 2005 film Syriana (2005). After that, Clooney went on to produce and star in Michael Clayton (2007), which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
He then directed and starred in Leatherheads (2008), and he took leading roles in Burn After Reading (2008), The Men Who Stare at Goats (2009), Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), and Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air (2009). In addition, Clooney was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in Michael Clayton (2007).
Clooney’s performance in the film Up in the Air (2009) garnered him widespread praise from film critics and earned him nominations for a number of accolades, including a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award. He did not win that year, but he went on to win both Best Actor awards and countless nominations for his performance in Alexander Payne’s film The Descendants, in which he plays a father who learns that his wife was unfaithful while she is lying in a coma.
In the film, he plays a father who discovers his wife’s infidelity while she is lying in a coma (2011). Clooney has been praised throughout his career for his involvement in political action and his work with humanitarian organizations. Since 2008, he has been one of the United Nations Messengers of Peace. Additionally, he has been an advocate for the Darfur crisis and he organized the Hope for Haiti telethon in order to collect money for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti in 2010.
While participating in a demonstration outside the Sudanese embassy in Washington, District of Columbia, in March 2012, George Clooney was detained for disobeying a lawful order and subsequently arrested. Between the years 1989 and 1993, George Clooney was married to the actress Talia Balsam.
Following the termination of their marriage, he vowed that he would never get married again. He received a cheque for the amount of the wager soon after his birthday from Nicole Kidman and Michelle Pfeiffer. They were betting that he would become a father before the age of 40. Clooney gave back the money and then made a wager that he wouldn’t have any children by the time he hit 50 for double or nothing.
Clooney has been in a number of highly known romances, including one with the ex-wrestler Stacy Keibler, despite the fact that he has maintained his status as a lifelong bachelor. He wed the human rights attorney and activist Amal Clooney in 2014, and the couple now has two children who are twins.
