Despite being an antagonist, Gavin is remarkably calm and level-headed for a Savior. When necessary, he can be ruthless, but he is more diplomatic than his peers. He is shown to have cowardly tendencies, pleading with Morgan for mercy and stating that Negan cannot be beaten, so it is better to just go along with it. While Gavin lets Jared get away with abusing Ezekiel’s guards most of the time, he has a low opinion of him and his obnoxious behaviour. Gavin, despite being a ruthless Savior by trade, has demonstrated that he has not completely abandoned his humanity. He becomes enraged when he realises that Jared shot Benjamin, a teenager, as a lesson to the Kingdom rather than Richard. Instead of taunting them the next day, as many Saviors would, Gavin expresses genuine concern about Benjamin’s health.
When Gavin realises Benjamin has died, he becomes visibly upset and orders Jared to return to base, threatening to kill him where he stands if he gives him any cheek. Jared was later transferred to the Satellite Outpost as a result of his disobedience. It’s possible that he only kept Jared around for so long because he needed someone to do the dirty work and knew Jared enjoyed it.
He is quite intelligent because he realized it was no coincidence that the Militia attacked on the same day the Saviors’ heads were gathered for a meeting, and that there must be a traitor who let the information slip. He also deduced that the Militia is after the outposts because a scheduled delivery from his outpost had not yet arrived at the Sanctuary, and he knew that his deliveries were never late. While invading the Kingdom, Gavin expresses regret and conflict over assuming complete control, saying, “God knows I didn’t want to be the one to bring it,” referring to the chaos he told the people they brought on themselves.
While threatening to make the situation “traumatic” if Ezekiel does not turn himself in, Gavin admits that he does not want that to happen and is clearly telling the truth. He even begged them to do so when confronted by Ezekiel, expressing regret and horror over Benjamin’s death. He also tells Ezekiel that he swallows things like Benjamin’s death in order to save others’ lives, and that Ezekiel should have done the same.While guarding Ezekiel, Gavin assures him that Negan will kill him regardless of how much he liked him previously. Gavin, on the other hand, ignores his pleas and orders a Savior to get a pillow for their truck so Ezekiel can have one last comfortable ride. Gavin realises they are under attack after not receiving a response from his men over the radio and retreats inside the auditorium with Ezekiel and the remaining Saviors. Gavin punches Ezekiel in the face as he continues to insist on switching sides. Carol and Morgan suddenly start shooting at the Saviors from the stage.
Gavin is shot in the leg after killing all of the Saviors, but he manages to flee as Morgan pursues him. Morgan discovers him while hiding in a shed and shoves him to the ground as Gavin begs for his life. He informs Morgan that killing him will not return Benjamin. Despite Ezekiel and Carol’s unsuccessful pleas to Morgan to spare Gavin’s life, Henry unexpectedly pierces Gavin’s throat with his staff from behind, much to everyone’s surprise. “Do Not Mislead Us” Morgan has a vision of Gavin with blood pouring from the wound that killed him as he stands guard outside Hilltop. He angrily taunts Morgan, claiming that he was supposed to kill him. Morgan then tries to attack his hallucination, but he disappears. Gavin taunts Morgan once more during the Saviors’ attack on Hilltop that night.
Except for the fact that he worked as a construction foreman, nothing is known about Gavin’s life before or during the outbreakDue to his loyalty and leadership abilities, Gavin was eventually appointed as the leader of his own outpost. He was put in charge of collecting weekly tributes from a community known as “The Kingdom.” 7th season ‘The Well,’ Gavin and his men meet Ezekiel and the Kingdom soldiers in an abandoned parking lot for their weekly supplies, where he is pleased to receive eight pig corpses to return to the Sanctuary.
When Jared and Richard start fighting, Gavin steps in to help defuse the situation by reminding his fellow Savior of Ezekiel’s kindness to them during the drops. When Gavin notices that one cantaloupe is missing from the request list, he asks the Kingdommers to hand over their weapons. Jared, on the other hand, shoots Benjamin in the leg. Gavin gives the Kindommers one more chance as Benjamin begins to bleed. Gavin and the Saviors return the next day in search of the missing cantaloupe.
After learning that Benjamin has died, Gavin becomes enraged and orders Jared to begin walking back to their outpost without saying anything or doing anything that might cause another problem, threatening to kill him if he doesn’t, to which Jared agrees. Gavin witnesses Morgan attacking and strangling Richard after his men retrieve the missing cantaloupe, but he allows him to do so because he prevents the Kindgommers from intervening. Morgan then reveals Richard’s plan and assures Gavin that the Kingdom will continue to honour their relationship. Gavin is relieved to hear this, and he and his men leave without incident. Despite his attempts to persuade Rick to calm down in order to reach a more peaceful solution,
Gavin is ignored. When the militia begins shooting in their direction, Gavin and his companions dive for cover and retreat inside for safety. The fence is then blown down, and a herd of walkers is led inside, completely encircling the Sanctuary. “The Big Scary U” After becoming trapped inside the Sanctuary, the lieutenants debate what to do about their current situation. Gavin speculates that there must be a traitor among them because the Militia attack coincides with the gathering of heads at the outposts.
He also deduces that the outposts are being attacked because a delivery from his location had not yet arrived, despite his insistence that deliveries from his outpost are never late. Laura interrupts the meeting by informing them that the workers are coming up the stairs to express their demands. While the lieutenants are dealing with the workers on the hall, one of them pulls out a gun and prepares to shoot Simon, but Regina shoots him instead.
They then hear whistling and everyone kneels as Negan arrives, much to everyone’s relief. Later, Gavin appears as Laura, Arat, and Gary inform them that a Savior stole weapons from the armoury and armed the workers. “How It Has to Be” Gavin and a team travel to the Kingdom to enchant vengeance on Ezekiel after Eugene’s plans successfully divert the herd away from the Sanctuary.
They arrive at the community that night after setting off explosions and sending everyone into a frenzy. Gavin demands that they bring forth Ezekiel after everyone has been gathered, while informing the residents that their community will be the new settlement for the Saviors. When it becomes clear that no one will reveal Ezekiel’s location,
Gavin begins to make a series of threats in an attempt to scare the people away, but this also fails. As Gavin stands atop the back of a truck, ranting about how he’ll make the situation traumatic if Ezekiel isn’t brought before him, Ezekiel sets off explosions as a distraction and rams a school bus into the truck Gavin is standing on, knocking him off. Ezekiel willingly locked himself inside the Kingdom and allowed himself to be captured after assisting his people in escaping. Gavin tells him that he didn’t want this to happen and that he liked him, almost apologising for Benjamin’s death. He then orders his men to kidnap Ezekiel and break his arms if he tries to resist.
