Gary Leonard Oldman is an English actor and director who was born on March 21, 1958. He has won numerous honors, including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and three British Academy Film Awards. He is well known for his variety and dramatic acting approach. He is one of the highest-grossing performers of all time thanks to his films, which have earned over $11 billion worldwide. On March 21, 1958, in New Cross, London, Gary Leonard Oldman was born. the son of Kathleen, a welder, and Leonard Bertram Oldman a former sailor. He said that his alcoholic father abandoned the family when Oldman was just seven years old.
] Oldman’s older sister Maureen, an actress better known by her stage name Laila Morse, appeared in Nil by Mouth, the director’s feature film debut, before landing her most well-known role as Mo Harris in the BBC serial opera EastEnders. Oldman was the first graduate of his class to land a job after graduating from theatre school; he claimed that this wasn’t because he was the most skilled actor, but rather because of his hard work and dedication.
At York’s Theatre Royal in 1979, he appeared in Thark alongside Annette Kerr. Romeo and Juliet, Privates on Parade, and Cabaret were some of the plays that came after. In Dick Whittington and His Cat, a play performed at York, Oldman played Puss in December 1979. He also performed in Colchester and with Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre. Oldman’s commitment to excellence and his signature passion made him a favorite with Glasgow audiences in the 1980s. He also went on tour with the Citizens Theatre ensemble in Europe and South America.
Between 1980 and 1981, Oldman made appearances in Robert David MacDonald’s plays Chinchilla and A Waste of Time, The Massacre at Paris (Christopher Marlowe), Desperado Corner, and others. In 1982, he appeared alongside Glenda Jackson in MacDonald’s Summit Conference during its six-month run on the West End. Oldman made his screen debut in Colin Gregg’s Remembrance that same year, and if Don Boyd’s Gossip hadn’t fallen through, he would have played the lead in that movie. He moved on to Chesterfield to take the lead role in Entertaining Mr. Sloane the next year after landing a leading role as a skinhead in Mike Leigh’s movie Meantime. Later, he relocated to Westcliffe to appear in Saved.
Oldman experienced a significant breakthrough with Saved. Oldman’s performance impressed Max Stafford-Clark, creative director of the Royal Court Theatre, who in 1984 gave him the main part of Scopey in Bond’s The Pope’s Wedding. He received two of the highest accolades in British theatre for his praised performance: the Time Out Fringe Award for Best Newcomer and the Drama Theatre Award for Best Actor, which he shared with future co-star Anthony Hopkins from the film Pravda.
After his performance in The Pope’s Wedding, Oldman continued to work with the Royal Court, appearing in a number of productions between 1984 and 1986, including Rat in the Skull, The Desert Air, Cain and Abel, The Danton Affair, Women Beware Women, Real Dreams, and all three of Bond’s The War Plays: Red Black and Ignorant, From 1985 to 1986, Oldman performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Director Alex Cox had watched the 1984 version of The Pope’s Wedding before offering Oldman the role of musician Sid Vicious in the 1986 movie Sid and Nancy. Before taking the part, he initially turned it down twice for the following reasons: “The punk movement and Sid Vicious didn’t really hold my attention. I had never done so. I wasn’t particularly interested in it. I thought the script was uninteresting, “who cares,” “why bother,” and other such phrases. And I was a little bit sort of thinking, “Well, the theater—so much more superior” and something like that, sort of with my nose in the air.”
Based on the pay and his agent’s pleading, he changed his mind. Oldman played Joe Orton in Prick Up Your Ears in 1987, which earned him a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor. This was Oldman’s third leading role. He made appearances in Serious Money and The Country Wife that same year. The Fifth Element director Luc Besson recalled how actor Gary Oldman could recite any scene from Hamlet. in which he had appeared ten years before.
Achieving praise from American film critic Roger Ebert, Oldman’s roles in Sid and Nancy and Prick Up Your Ears paved the path for work in Hollywood. Ebert penned, “The two performances are completely different from one another; like a select few exceptional performers, is able to reinvent himself for each character.
He is the best young British actor available based on these two films.” John Lydon, a former bandmate of Vicious’s with the Sex Pistols, praised Oldman as a “bloody fine actor” despite his criticism of Sid and Nancy. The performance would later be ranked No. 8 in Uncut magazine’s “10 Best actors in rockin’ roles” and No. 62 in Premiere magazine’s “100 Greatest Performances of All Time”, with the latter praising Oldman’s portrayal as a “hugely sympathetic reading of the punk figurehead as a lost and bewildered manchild.”
Oldman went to Deptford’s West Greenwich School but left when he was 16 to work in a sports store. He was a pianist as a child, but after seeing Malcolm McDowell’s performance in the movie The Raging Moon, he decided to pursue acting instead of music. He stated, “Something about Malcolm just arrested me, and I connected, and I said, “I want to do that,” in an interview with Charlie Rose from 1995. Growing up in south London, Oldman followed both Manchester United and his hometown team, Millwall F.C., because he admired George Best.
The information that his father had played for Millwall soon after World War II came to him from his mother in 2011: “[My mother] operated a boarding home for Millwall football players right after the war. And I was aware that my father had some connection to the reserve team. However, my mother mentioned the fact that my dad played for Millwall two weeks earlier. He played in a few games for the first team when he was young.” Midway through the 1970s, while working on assembly lines, as a porter in an operating room, selling shoes, and beheading pigs at a slaughterhouse, Oldman studied with the Young People’s Theatre in Greenwich.
He submitted an unsuccessful application to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, which encouraged him to resubmit the following year but suggested he look for another job. Oldman jokingly replied that “the work speaks for itself” when Charlie Rose inquired as to whether he had notified RADA of this. His tuition at the Rose Bruford College in Sidcup, south-east London, was covered by a scholarship, and in 1979 he earned a BA in acting there. While there, Oldman characterized himself as a “shy” yet devoted worker, playing parts like Puck in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
In Immortal Beloved from 1994, he also played Ludwig van Beethoven. Later, he played Sirius Black in the Harry Potter series, James Gordon in the Dark Knight Trilogy from 2005 to 2012, and Dreyfus, a human leader, in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. He was nominated for his performances as George Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Herman J. Mankiewicz in Mank and won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his depiction of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour.
The Contender, Plunkett & Macleane, and Nil by Mouth, the latter of which he also wrote and directed, all had Oldman serving as executive producer. He has appeared in music videos for David Bowie, Guns N’ Roses, and Annie Lennox in addition to Slow Horses, Fallen Angels, Tracey Takes On…, and Friends. He has also voiced the characters Ignatius and Viktor Reznov in Call of Duty and The Legend of Spyro video games.
