Bio

Gary Barlow’s career started at a young age when he participated in the BBC’s ‘Pebble Mill at One’ singing competition, reaching the semi-finals in 1986. In 1989, he met Nigel Martin-Smith, and together they formed the band ‘Take That,’ which included members Robbie Williams, Jason Orange, Howard Donald, and Mark Owen. Barlow served as the band’s lead singer and lyricist. ‘Take That’s’ self-titled debut album was released on August 17, 1992, and peaked at number two on the ‘UK Albums Chart.’ On October 23, 1993, the band released their second album, ‘Everything Changes,’ which propelled them to fame. Barlow’s song ‘Pray’ from the album won him his first ‘Ivor Novello Award’ in 1994, and the album itself won the prestigious ‘Mercury Prize’ the same year.

Their third album, ‘Nobody Else,’ was released on May 8, 1995, and quickly became the group’s best-selling album. It included the singles ‘Sure,’ ‘Never Forget,’ and ‘Back for Good,’ all of which featured Barlow on lead vocals, and earned him yet another ‘Ivor Novello Award’ (1996). ‘Take That’ broke up in 1996 and reformed in 2005. On November 26, 2006, they launched their new album ‘Beautiful World,’ which includes chart-topping singles ‘Rule the World,’ ‘Shine,’ and ‘Patience.’ Since then, the group has released further albums, including ‘The Circus’ (2008), ‘Progress’ (2010), ‘III’ (2014), and ‘Wonderland’ (2015). Gary Barlow immediately began work on his debut solo album following the breakup of Take That in 1996.

Gary Barlow’s first two solo singles, ‘Forever Love’ and ‘Love Won’t Wait,’ were both successful, reaching the top of the charts. His debut solo album, ‘Open Road,’ was released on May 26, 1997, and has since been certified Platinum. His second album, ‘Twelve Months, Eleven Days,’ was released on October 11, 1999, but failed to achieve the same level of success as his first album. In 2009, Barlow collaborated with Robbie Williams on the hit single ‘Shame,’ which earned a Silver certification from the British Phonographic Industry.

Barlow’s third solo album, ‘Sing,’ was released in 2012 and also performed well on the charts. His fourth solo album, ‘Since I Saw You Last,’ was released on November 22, 2013, and included popular songs such as ‘Let Me Go,’ ‘Face to Face,’ and the title track ‘Since I Saw You Last.’

Additionally, he had a highly public rivalry with former ‘Take That’ bandmate Robbie Williams, who claimed that Barlow was responsible for his decision to leave the group. He also previously said to co-judge Tulisa on ‘The X Factor’, “I’m not sure what insulted me more – what you said or your fag ash breath,” which drew significant condemnation.

Gary Barlow was born on January 20, 1971, in Frodsham, Cheshire, England, to Marge and Colin Barlow. Ian Barlow is his elder brother. He is married to Dawn Andrews, and the couple has three children together: Daniel, Emily, and Daisy. The couple reported in August 2012 that they had lost their fourth child, a daughter named Poppy, during birth.
