Garth Nix was born in 1963. After graduating from high school, Nix enlisted in the Army Reserve and spent the next five years having a great time serving his country in his spare time. Nix started writing his first novel, The Ragwitch, while he was employed in a bookstore in Canberra. The book was originally released in 1990 in Australia and in 1994 in the United States. In 1996, he received his degree in professional writing from the University of Canberra, where he studied for four years. Nix spent a number of years working in the publishing industry in Sydney before embarking on a long trip around the world.
During this time, he followed in Alexander the Great’s footsteps by traveling from London to Pakistan through an overland route. During that trip, Nix wrote a portion of his subsequent book, Sabriel, which was a young adult fantasy story about a magical girl who came from a planet far different from our own. Sabriel was nominated for various accolades and was placed on the shortlist for six US State awards. He was able to balance working a full-time job with writing on the side for a number of years before he finally committed to writing as his full-time occupation at the end of 2001.
Lirael: Daughter of the Clayr, which was written by Garth Nix and published in 2001, was a sequel to Sabriel and won the 2002 Adelaide Festival Award for Children’s Literature. After Sabriel, Nix wrote the independent novel Shade’s Children, and then in 2001, he returned to the Old Kingdom to write a sequel to Sabriel titled Lirael: Daughter of the Clayr. Abhorsen, the third book in the series, was released to the public in the year 2003.
The subsequent novel, Clariel, was published in 2014, and the concluding work, Goldenhand, was published in 2016. The Old Kingdom series, which also includes collections of short stories, has been honored with numerous national and international accolades, such as the Aurealis Award, the American Library Association Honor Book listings, and the Ditmar Award; in addition, Goldenhand has been shortlisted for both the Carnegie Medal and the Locus Award.
Serena and the Sea Serpent, published in 2000, and the six-book cycle The Seventh Tower, published in 2000, are two examples of his works for younger readers. In more recent times, he has worked alongside Sean Williams on the production of the programs Troubletwisters and Has Sword, Will Travel.
