Gareth Southgate Bio

Gareth Southgate, OBE, is an English professional football manager and former player. He was born on September 3, 1970, and played as both a defender and a midfielder throughout his playing career. Since 2016, he has been in charge of the England national football team as manager. Southgate led Crystal Palace to the First Division title in 1993–1994 and won the League Cup with Aston Villa in 1995–1996 and Middlesbrough in 2003–2004. Southgate also won the League Cup with Middlesbrough.

Additionally, he competed for Villa in the FA Cup Final in the year 2000 and Middlesbrough in the UEFA Cup Final in the year 2006. Between the years 1995 and 2004, Southgate appeared 57 times for the England national team in international competitions. He participated in each of England’s matches at the UEFA Euro 1996, including the semi-final, but the team was eliminated when he missed a penalty kick. In addition, he participated in the FIFA World Cup in 1998 as well as the UEFA Euro in 2000. After more than 500 appearances in league competition, his playing career came to an end in May of 2006 when he was 35 years old.

Between the months of June 2006 and October 2009, Southgate served as Middlesbrough’s manager. In addition, he was the manager of the England under-21 team from 2013 to 2016, before taking over for Sam Allardyce as the manager of the England national team in 2016. Southgate was awarded the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Coach Award after leading the England national side to the World Cup semi-finals in his first competition as England’s manager at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Southgate followed in the footsteps of Alf Ramsey and Bobby Robson as the third manager in England’s history to accomplish this feat.

He became the first England manager to reach the final of a European Championship at the UEFA Euro 2020 competition, as well as the first England manager to reach the final of any major tournament since 1966. In the end, England was defeated by Italy in a penalty shootout. Southgate started his professional career with Crystal Palace, where he played first on the right side of the defense and then in the middle of the field. After being named captain, he guided the team to victory in the First Division in the 1993–1994 season. when making 152 appearances for the South London club over the course of four seasons, he was transferred to Aston Villa for a transfer price of £2.5 million when the team was demoted from the Premier League.

Because one of the Palace coaches thought his method of exact speech resembled Denis Norden’s vocal delivery, he was given the nickname “Nord” when he was playing for the team. Southgate made a £6.5 million transfer to Middlesbrough after signing a contract with the club on July 11, 2001. He signed a contract with the club for a period of four years and was the first player signed by Steve McClaren, whom he was familiar with in his previous role as coach of England.

Southgate was named the new captain of the Middlesbrough football team in July 2002, after Paul Ince’s departure to play for Wolverhampton Wanderers. At the age of 29, he made history by being the first captain in Boro’s 128-year history to hoist a trophy after leading his team to victory in the League Cup final against Bolton Wanderers at the Millennium Stadium on February 29, 2004. Southgate dispelled rumors in the media that he was going to transfer to Manchester United in the wake of Rio Ferdinand’s suspension for skipping a drug test in January 2004, when the rumors first surfaced. After that, he decided to finish his playing career with Middlesbrough and signed a contract with them until 2007.

Boro’s match against Sevilla in the UEFA Cup Final in 2006, which was played at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven, was his last as a professional player. Boro was defeated by Sevilla by a score of 4-0. In a match against Portugal in December 1995, Southgate made his first appearance for England after coming in as a substitute. Terry Venables was the manager at the time. Southgate was the host team for every single minute of their matches.

At the UEFA Euro 1996, England competed against Germany in the semi-final round of the tournament. The winner of the match was settled by a shootout using penalties; Southgate’s attempt was saved, and England was knocked out of the competition when Andreas Moller scored the following German penalty. Towards the end of that year, Southgate was able to make light of his gaffe by starring in an advertisement for Pizza Hut. The commercial also included Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle, who had both missed important penalties during the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

In addition, Southgate participated in the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the 2000 UEFA Euro. In September of 2002, at Villa Park, he earned his 50th cap in a match with Portugal that ended 1–1. On June 11, 2003, he played the entire 90 minutes in a Euro 2004 qualifying triumph over Slovakia at his club home at the Riverside Stadium, playing alongside Middlesbrough’s striker Szilárd Németh. The game ended with Middlesbrough prevailing 2–1 against Slovakia. In June of 2006, Middlesbrough manager Steve McClaren resigned from his position to take over the managerial responsibilities of the England national team from Sven-Goran Eriksson. Southgate was picked by chairman Steve Gibson to follow McClaren, and he agreed to a five-year deal to do so. Despite the fact that Martin O’Neill was the early favorite for the new vacancy, Southgate was selected.

Because Southgate did not possess the necessary coaching qualifications to manage a top-flight club, he was only able to be appointed as manager for an initial period of twelve weeks. However, he was granted a special dispensation from the board of directors of the Premier League in November 2006, which enabled him to continue in his role as manager. Because Southgate had only just retired from playing for England’s national team, Middlesbrough was able to effectively claim that he had not had the chance to participate in any of the coaching courses. After that, Southgate went on to finish all of the requirements for his coaching certifications.

Southgate was entrusted with rebuilding a squad that had sold numerous players at the conclusion of the previous league season, including important players such as Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Doriva, prior to his hiring as manager of the club. Southgate’s appointment was effective immediately. Herold Goulon was the first player he brought in as manager, and he was acquired from Lyon on July 12 for a sum that was not revealed. He strengthened the team’s defense by signing four new players, including Julio Arca from Sunderland, Robert Huth from Chelsea and Jason Euell from Charlton Athletic on permanent agreements, and Jonathan Woodgate from Real Madrid on a season-long loan.

Jonathan Woodgate joined the team on a loan for the duration of the season. After playing eleven games in their pre-season campaign, Southgate’s managerial reign began on the opening day of the Premier League season on 19 August 2006, when his team was defeated 3–2 away at Reading. Southgate’s team had played eleven games in their pre-season campaign. In spite of the fact that they got off to a poor start, they were able to redeem themselves with a 2–1 win against the defending champions Chelsea when they hosted them at the Riverside Stadium.

Southgate earned 57 England national team caps and scored twice for the team. His first goal occurred on October 14, 1998, against Luxembourg in a qualifying match for the Euro 2000 tournament. His second goal came on May 22, 2003, against South Africa in a friendly. He has 57 caps for England and has played 42 of them while playing for Aston Villa, making him the player with the most England caps for Aston Villa.
