Gabourey Sidibe Bio

Gabourey Sidibe was born on May 6, 1983. Her parents, Ibnou Sidibe, a taxi driver, and Alice Tan Ridley, a gospel singer, are her parents. Alice competed on the fifth season of America’s Got Talent, which was the year that she appeared on the show. Because of her weight, she was made fun of at school, and when she got home, her parents continued the bullying.

Both Borough of Manhattan Community College and The City University of New York were Gabourey Sidibe’s educational institutions of choice. She signed up for a psychology class at Mercy College in New York, but she ended up dropping out so that she could feature in her first film, Precious. Following the breakup of her parent’s marriage, Gabourey Sidibe, along with her mother and brother, moved in with her aunt Dorothy Pitman Hughes in Harlem. Dorothy Pitman Hughes is Gabourey’s mother’s sister. During the formative years of Gabourey Sidibe, one of the most significant impacts on her life had been the well-known civil rights and feminism leader, Katherine Hughes.

Gabourey Sidibe is an American actress who first came to national attention with her performance in her debut film, Precious, in which she played the role of Claireece “Precious” Jones. In addition to being nominated for every other significant award that year, Sidibe was selected as the winner of the Independent Spirit Award in the category of Best Female Lead. She was also nominated for the award for Best Actress at both the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards.

In addition to this, she was one of just eleven actresses of African-American descent to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress.  She did take part in the school plays when she was younger, but she had no intention of making a profession out of playing. Following the success of her first film, which garnered positive reviews from film critics, Sidibe established a reputation for herself in the entertainment industry by landing major roles in several prominent television series, including American Horror Story, Empire, and Difficult People. The battles that Gabourey Sidibe fought and won, and the subsequent success that she achieved as a result of those battles, continue to serve as an inspiration for plus-size women fighting for body acceptance.

Her performance as Claireece, a teenager who was sexually harassed by her father and physically mistreated by her mother, earned global recognition for Gabourey Sidibe in her debut film, Precious, which she directed and starred in back in 2009. She shared screen time with Mo’Nique and Mariah Carey in the movie that she was in. In 2010, she made her first appearance on television when she presented an edition of Saturday Night Live starring Gabourey Sidibe and MGMT. In the same year, Gabourey Sidibe made her debut on television playing the role of Andrea Jackson in the television series The Big C. She continued to appear in episodes of the series until 2013.

Both “In Yelling to the Sky” and “Tower Heist,” both films released in 2011, featured Gabourey Sidibe in starring roles. She was also a guest star in the television sitcom American Dad! in 2011 and 2012 respectively. Between the years 2013 and 2014, Gabourey Sidibe plays the role of Queenie on the television series American Horror Story: Coven. She played the same character in both the American Horror Story: Hotel and the American Horror Story: Apocalypse episodes.

Between the years 2015 and 2020, Gabourey Sidibe was a regular cast member of the musical drama series Empire on Fox. In 2016, she directed the short film The Tale of Four, whose plot was inspired by the song Four Women by Nina Simone. Gabourey Sidibe made an appearance on an album released in 2011 by the indie pop band Foster the People. The following year, she made appearances on albums released by Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx.

In 2017, she released the book This Is Just My Face: Try Not to Stare, which is a funny yet detailed history of the struggles she endured in the years leading up to her breakthrough in the entertainment world. For her work in the film Precious, which was released in 2009, Gabourey Sidibe was recognized with a number of significant award nominations in 2009 and 2010. She was honored with 19 Academy Awards, including “Best Actress.”

She was awarded the Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best Cast for her performance in the film Seven Psychopaths, which was released in 2012. As of the year 2020, Gabourey has not entered into a legally binding marriage. However, she is currently seeing Brandon Frankel in a romantic relationship. Brandon continued to be an incredible support system for his girlfriend even after he learned he had type 2 diabetes. When the two loves finally make the decision to take their relationship to the next level, this part of the article will be updated.

Her efforts and earnings as an actor allowed her to build a respectable fortune throughout the course of her career. This sum does not take into account the worth of her cherished possessions, which include her residences and cars, among other things.

She played a significant role in the Showtime series “The Big C” from the years 2010 to 2013. Both “American Horror Story: Hotel” and “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” featured Sidibe in the role of Queenie, which she had previously played. She played the role of Becky Williams in the musical drama series “Empire,” which aired on Fox from 2015 to 2020.

In it, she narrates her one-of-a-kind life narrative in a tone that is as contemporary and challenging as the voices she’s used on screen for many of the different roles she’s played. In addition to being an advocate for mental health, she has spoken publicly about her diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, which ultimately led to her having laparoscopic bariatric surgery.
