Originally from Virginia Beach, Douglas began gymnastics training at the age of six. As a teenager, she moved away from home and began training with renowned master Liang Chow in West Des Moines, Iowa. At the 2010 Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup, Douglas finished fourth in the all-around event, and at the 2011 Visa Championships, she tied for third on the uneven bars and took seventh place in the all-around. Douglas quickly gained national recognition. As a member of the U.S. senior national team, she helped the Americans win gold on the uneven bars at the 2011 World Championships. When Martha Karolyi noticed Douglas’s prowess on the uneven bars, she gave her the nickname “the Flying Squirrel,” which she and her group of admirers took to heart and adopted as their own.
Douglas barely missed out on the all-around title at the 2012 Visa Championships to reigning world and national champion Jordyn Wieber. Douglas won gold on the uneven bars and bronze on the floor exercise in addition to the silver he earned in the all-around competition. A few weeks later, at the United States Olympic trials, Douglas won the all-around title by a hair-over Wieber. Douglas’ win guaranteed him a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.
Wieber, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney, and Kyla Ross teamed up with Douglas in London to win the first women’s team gold medal for the United States since 1996. After that, Douglas took part in the all-around competition, where he finished first overall with high scores in each rotation. On the balance beam and uneven bars, Douglas participated on an individual basis as well, but he did not win any medals, coming in seventh and eighth, respectively. In 2012, she published her memoir Grace, Gold and Glory: My Leap of Faith with coauthor Michelle Burford.
Douglas had a two-year break from competitive gymnastics before making a comeback in November 2014 for the United States national team. She took silver in the all-around and gold in the team event at the 2015 artistic gymnastics world championships. In the next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, she earned a gold medal with her team but did not earn an individual medal.
The 2016 Summer Olympic Games were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 5 to August 21, 2016. The 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro marked the 28th time the modern Olympic Games had been held. It was the first time the Winter or Summer Olympics were staged in South America, depending on your perspective.
The International Olympic Committee chose Rio de Janeiro over Chicago, Madrid, and Tokyo in 2009 to host the Games. In comparison to the previous Olympics, the lead-up to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was plagued by more issues than usual. Rio de Janeiro’s Olympics were beset by major cost overruns and construction delays, much like other 21st-century Games like 2014’s Sochi Winter Olympics. In addition to the Zika virus outbreak, athletes like golfers Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth withdrew from the city due to its reputation as a dangerous place to visit.
Athletes using the open waters were advised by the World Health Organization to avoid eating any debris, cover any exposed cuts with waterproof bandages, and take a shower as soon as they finished their race. A mere 50 days before the opening of the Games, Rio de Janeiro declared a “state of public catastrophe,” giving authorities the power to restrict access to key public services and making the state eligible for federal emergency funding. In addition, the Petrobras affair caused a recession just before the Olympics in Brazil.
Despite these setbacks, the Rio Olympics got underway on time and ran smoothly for the duration of the two-week event. Over 11,000 competitors competed in 42 different sports, with 205 different national Olympic organizations taking part for the first time. Golf and rugby sevens were two of the notable new sports introduced for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, a Refugee Team comprised of ten athletes from diverse war-torn nations made its debut.
It was the third time in four Olympics that the best Olympian in history, U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps, and the greatest Olympic sprinter, Jamaica’s Usain Bolt, starred. Once Phelps came out of his brief retirement, he set new records for the most Olympic medals (28) and the most gold medals (24). (23). Bolt became the first individual to win the 100- and 200-meter sprints at the same Olympic Games three times in a row. Additionally, he earned a gold medal with Jamaica’s 4 x 100-meter relay team in 2008, giving him three gold medals in three consecutive Olympics—until the January 2017 revelation of a failed drug test by one of his 2008 relay teammates led to the removal of the earlier relay medal. Despite this, Bolt’s six Olympic gold medals in the individual sprints confirmed his status as the all-time record holder.
