Franco De Vita is a singer and songwriter who is well-known in the Latin music scene. He was born on January 23, 1954, in Caracas, Venezuela. De Vita was one of three children that were born to Italian immigrants in Latin America. When he was three years old, his family moved back to Italy. When De Vita was 13 years old, his family relocated back to Venezuela, where he eventually went on to study piano at the university level.
Icaro was a band that De Vita founded in 1982 and released one album under its own name in his own country of Italy. When another year passed, he finally issued his debut album under his own name, simply titled Franco De Vita. This album was responsible for three singles, all of which were performed in Spanish: “Somos Three,” “No Hay Cielo,” and “Un Bien Perdedor.” The song “Sólo Importas T,” which can be found on the album, was chosen to serve as the theme song for the soap opera La Dama de Rosa, which is performed in Spanish. At the conclusion of each and every episode, he would play the song on the piano while the credits rolled.
In order to gain greater exposure across the globe, De Vita changed record labels and joined Sony in 1988 for the release of the album Al Norte Del Sur. The album was a critical and commercial success, and it solidified his reputation as a purveyor of socially conscious, adult-oriented pop, particularly through the songs “Te Amo” and “Louis.” Specifically, the songs helped to establish his reputation as a purveyor of socially conscious, adult-oriented pop. The latter song, which was marketed with a music video that was regarded as highly innovative for its day, was about a daydreaming taxi driver who admired The Beatles. The song “No Basta” was included in De Vita’s album Extranjero, which was released in 1990. The song was a hit in the United States, spending four weeks at the top of the Latin charts and winning an MTV Video Music Award.
Following albums include the live CD En Vivo Marzo 16, which was followed by Voces A Mi Alrededor in 1993, the acoustic-flavored Fuera De El Mundo, and Nada Es Igual, which was inspired by global beat and released in 1999. In 2002, he released an album titled Segundas Partes También Son Buenas after which he parted ways with Sony, only to rejoin the label the following year.
With a sound that is sometimes compared to that of Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel, De Vita has established himself as one of Latin music’s most consistently popular singer-songwriters, and he has continued to have commercial success in this capacity. The singles “Tu De Qué Vas” and “Si La Ves” helped propel his album Stop to the Top 10 on the Latin charts in the United States and throughout Latin America in 2004. The latter of these songs was a duet with the popular music group Sin Bandera. During the same year, he co-headlined a tour of venues in the United States with another Venezuelan songwriter named Ricardo Montaner.
Montaner is also from Venezuela. According to reports, De Vita is one of the most commercially successful musical acts to ever originate in Venezuela. In addition, he has released albums in both Italian and Portuguese, albeit too much less commercial success. As a songwriter, he is responsible for some of Ricky Martin and Chayanne’s most successful songs. An enhanced version of Stop, named Stop + Algo Más, was made available in 2005.
This version had not just remixes and live recordings, but it also featured No Sé Lo Que Me Das, which was De Vita’s first track done in English. The next year saw the publication of the live album “Mil y Una Historias En Vivo,” which featured four studio tracks in addition to its two discs of live performances. These tunes included collaborations with Alejandro Fernández and Diego El Cigala. A DVD version was also made available at the same time.
Raymond Lukens and De Vita collaborated on the creation of the Hamlyn School of Dancing in Florence, Italy, as well as the ABT National Training Curriculum. De Vita directed the school. In addition to that, he has served as a judge for the Young America Grand Prix as well as the Prix de Lausanne.
Prior to joining ABT, De Vita served as the Dean of Faculty and Curriculum at the Boston Ballet School. She has also taught as a guest instructor at the Basel Ballet School, the Virginia School of the Arts, Peridance International, Dance Connecticut, Dance Educators of America, and the Youth America Grand Prix.
Accolades on a global scale were earned by the ABT Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School while De Vita was the school’s director. The ABT JKO School was recognized as the top ballet academy in the world in 2012 and was presented with the Jia Ruskaja Award in Rome, Italy. The following year, the School was asked to perform at the Kremlin for the 240th anniversary of the Bolshoi Ballet Academy. In 2014, the School was recognized as having the top Academy in Florence, Italy, and received the Mercurio Volante award for its achievements. The School’s most advanced students traveled to Russia in 2015 to give performances at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in both Moscow and Astrakhan.
