Frances O’Connor Bio

Frances Ann O’Connor is a British-born Australian actress and director. She was born on June 12th, 1967, in Australia. Her parts in the movies Mansfield Park, Bedazzled, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, The Importance of Being Earnest, and Timeline are primarily responsible for her widespread recognition. In addition to being nominated for two Golden Globe Awards for her work in Madame Bovary and The Missing, O’Connor was presented with an AACTA Award for her role in Blessed, which she ultimately won.

Emily, her first feature film as a writer and director, was published in 2022. O’Connor was born in Wantage, which was a part of Berkshire, England, at the time; her mother was a pianist, and her father was a nuclear physicist. When she was two years old, O’Connor’s family relocated from England to Perth, Western Australia. She is the third child of five, with one older brother, one older sister, and two younger sisters on either side of her in the pecking order.

O’Connor went to the Roman Catholic Mercedes College in Perth after growing up in a Roman Catholic family. After that, she got a Bachelor of Arts degree in literature from Curtin University in Western Australia, both in Western Australia. She also attended the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. O’Connor made her début in the film industry with Emma-Kate Croghan’s indie romantic comedy Love and Other Catastrophes (1996), which received high praise from film critics.

For her work in the movie, she was nominated for the AACTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, her first nomination in this category. In 1997, she played opposite Cate Blanchett and Richard Roxburgh in the film Thank God He Met Lizzie and played a significant part in Kiss or Kill, in which she also acted. O’Connor made her debut in the role of Fanny Price in the British romantic comedy-drama Mansfield Park in the year 1999. Additionally, the movie was met with favorable reception from reviewers. In the year that followed, O’Connor was recognized with a nomination for a Golden Globe Award for her portrayal of Emma Bovary in the film Madame Bovary.

O’Connor started her acting career in Hollywood by partaking in the 2000 adaptation of the comedic film Bedazzled, initially released in 1967 under the same title. She played a role opposite Brendan Fraser and Elizabeth Hurley in the movie. She had a starring role in the next year’s production of the science fiction drama A.I. Artificial Intelligence, directed by Steven Spielberg. As a result of her work in the movie, she was considered for the Saturn Award in the Best Actress category.

In the romantic comedy-drama film The Importance of Being Earnest, released in 2002 and based on Oscar Wilde’s classic play, she played alongside Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, and Judi Dench. The film was directed by Oliver Parker and was adapted from Wilde’s play. O’Connor had a starring role in the science fiction movie Timeline, which was released in 2003 and was a commercial failure. Her co-star was Paul Walker.

In 2004, O’Connor returned to the indie film world by starring in the movie Iron Jawed Angels alongside Hilary Swank, Julia Ormond, and Anjelica Huston. She was nominated for two more AACTA Awards for Best Actress, this time for the roles she played in Three Dollars (2005) and The Hunter. She played alongside Lucy Liu, Miranda Otto, and Bonnie Somerville in the ABC comedy-drama series Cashmere Mafia 2008; however, the show was canceled after only one season.

Because of her work in the 2009 film Blessed, she was given the AACTA Award for Best Actress that year. In subsequent years, she had roles in films such as Jayne Mansfield’s Car, Little Red Wagon, and The Truth About Emanuel. In 2011, O’Connor was selected to play the role of Hallelujah in the drama pilot for ABC titled Hallelujah, written by Marc Cherry; however, the show was not brought up to series. She played the role of Rose Selfridge in the British historical drama Mr. Selfridge for two years, from 2013 to 2014.

O’Connor was given the role of the main protagonist in the British drama The Missing in the year 2014. Because of her role in the series, she was considered for a nomination for the Golden Globe Award in the category of Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film. After that, she appeared in the fourth season of the American television series Once Upon a Time as Colette, Belle’s mother.

In the horror thriller The Conjuring 2, which was released in 2016, O’Connor played with Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, as well as in Cleverman, in which she starred opposite Iain Glen. In 2005, O’Connor and her long-term companion Gerald Lepkowski welcomed a child into the world: a son. In 2011, the couple tied the knot in front of family and friends in Australia at O’Connor’s mother’s house.

Actress and director Frances Ann O’Connor was born in the United Kingdom but raised in Australia. It was her parts in the movies Mansfield Park (1999), Bedazzled (2000), A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001), The Importance of Being Earnest (2002), and Timeline (2003) that brought her fame as an actress. O’Connor has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award for the role of Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film for her work in Madame Bovary (2000) and The Missing (2014). She received the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in Blessed (2009).

She also liked “how badass Cathy and Heathcliff were,” describing it as “that feeling of being misunderstood and not belonging.” Their defiance indeed called to me when I was a teenager. Forty years later, she has taken those sensory recollections to a movie about the novel’s author, Emily Bront. This story is her directorial debut, and she anticipates that it will anger some purists, while she hopes it will inspire a new generation of young women in the same way the novel had inspired her.

The woman who dashes out of her home in north London for a photo shoot and an interview, where she lives with her actor husband Gerald Lepkowski and their son, who is 17 years old, is dressed in a manner that is uncomplicated and functional by the changing of the seasons in England. Even though she is accompanied by a cosmetic artist, the actor, whose own significant roles in period dramas have included the title role in Madame Bovary, Fanny Price in Mansfield Park, and Rose, the elegant wife of the retail genius in the ITV blockbuster series Mr. Selfridge, is not trying to draw attention to herself in any way.
