He was nominated for a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for his role in the film The Last King of Scotland (2006). After Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, and Jamie Foxx, he becomes only the fourth African-American male to win an Academy Award for Best Actor, following in the footsteps of their predecessors. Whitaker’s parents, Laura Francis (Smith), a special education teacher, and Forest Steven Whitaker, an insurance salesman, welcomed him into the world on July 15, 1961, in Longview, Texas.
In 1965, he and his family relocated to South Central Los Angeles. Whitaker, who has a natural athletic ability, initially gained admission to college through a football scholarship. Later, though, he transferred to the University of Southern California, where he focused his studies on music and obtained two further scholarships while training as an operatic tenor. Following that, he was awarded another scholarship at Berkeley, this time with a renewed emphasis on acting and the performing stage.
Whitaker made his feature film debut at the age of 21 in the rowdy comedy Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), in which he played a football player, which was a natural fit for him. He went on to play a wrestler in his second film, Vision Quest, which was about a group of students who are interested in sports (1985).
He also earned experience on television, appearing in guest roles on shows as diverse as Diff’rent Strokes (1978) and Cagney & Lacey (1981), as well as the Civil War epic North & South: Book 1, North & South (1985), and its sequel, North & South: Book 2, North & South (1986). The Color of Money was the film that truly established him as a major actor (1986).
A huge moment in the film, in which he appears to be an oblivious pool player who out-hustles Paul Newman’s Fast Eddie Felson, was pure electricity. The success of these roles led to more prominent roles in “A” class films such as Platoon (1986), Stakeout (1987), and Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), which culminated in his breakthrough lead role as the tortured jazz icon ‘Charlie “Bird” Parker in Clint Eastwood’s passion project Bird (1988), for which Whitaker received the Cannes Film Festival award for “best actor” and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor. Throughout the 1990s, Whitaker worked with a number of well-known directors, including Richard Linklater.
The naivety, hesitation, and timidity that characterize his “gentle giants” are tempered by an underlying humanism that is strong and unwavering. But he has not shied away from the rougher, darker sides of life, as his occasional hitmen and other threatening streetwise types can attest. His performance as an IRA-captured British soldier who develops a weird relationship with an unknown femme fatale is one of the most memorable in the critically acclaimed drama
The Crying Game, despite appearing in only the opening portion (1992). Known for his willingness to experiment and push the boundaries, he’s gone on to improve a number of lesser-known films. He played a variety of roles, including a plastic surgeon in Johnny Handsome (1989), a gay clothing designer in Robert Altman’s Ready to Wear (1994), an alien hunter in Species (1995), a father who is confronted by his estranged son in Smoke (1995), and a Mafia hitman who models himself after the samurai warrior in Ghost Dog.
The Way of the Samurai (1999). As might be predicted, he’s also been responsible for a few epic-scale disasters, the most infamous of which is the L. Ron Hubbard sci-fi disaster Battlefield Earth (2000). Among his television credits include the consulting producer and presenter of Rod Serling’s legendary series classic The Twilight Zone (2002–2003), which ran for a dismal one season and was a disappointment to fans.
Whitaker broadened his horizons in the early 1990s to include producing and directing, and he has since earned acclaim for his work both in front and behind the camera. A Rage in Harlem (1991), in which he co-starred with Gregory Hines and Robin Givens, was his first feature film production.
He subsequently made his directing debut with the lyrical Waiting to Exhale (1995), which featured a slew of distaff black stars. He also directed the music video for the movie’s theme song, which featured co-star Whitney Houston (“Shoop Shoop”). In addition, he directed the lighthearted romantic comedy First Daughter (2004), which starred Katie Holmes and Michael Keaton. Aside from starring in First Daughter, Whitaker worked as an executive producer on the project.
The Emmy-award-winning Door to Door, starring William H. Macy in 2002, was among his earlier executive productions for made-for-television movies in which he had a hand. Several of these productions were produced by him through his production business, Spirit Dance Entertainment, which he closed down in 2005 in order to focus solely on his acting career.
In 2002, he co-starred in the thriller Phone Booth, directed by Joel Schumacher, alongside Kiefer Sutherland and Colin Farrell. In the same year, he also appeared in the film Panic Room, in which he co-starred alongside Jodie Foster. The Last King of Scotland, a 2006 film directed by Whitaker, is his most notable achievement to date. His portrayal earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007. For the same role, he also received a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a BAFTA Award, and numerous other critical honors, including a BAFTA Award. He’s got it.
