Fiona Judith Kidman was born on 26 March 1940. Kidman, who was born in Hawera but raised in Northland, attended university in Rotorua and now works as a librarian there. In the early 1960s, she began working as a freelance journalist and was guided in the theatre and radio theatre fields by Bruce Mason and William Austin, respectively. She has produced eight novels, four collections of short stories, and four volumes of poetry since 1979. Her writing frequently explores the morality and hypocrisies of the lower middle class as well as the effects of suburban and provincial living.
Kidman is very involved in the literary world; she was president of the New Zealand Book Council from 1992 to 1995 and the national president of PEN from 1981 to 1983. In 1988, she created what is now a department at Whitireia Community Polytechnic: the Fiona Kidman Creative Writing School. She served as the New Zealand Book Council’s Honorary President and the 2006 Katherine Mansfield Memorial Fellow at Meridian Energy. Her most recent novel, The Captive Wife, was a Montana New Zealand Book Award Readers’ Choice winner and a Deutz Medal finalist in 2006.
The elderly lady in The Book of Secrets is based on one I saw every day on the bus ride to Waipu District High. Realistically, I know that I misunderstood her and that my relationship with the Waipu community suffered as a result. If I had known that information, I doubt I would have written the book I did. From a writer’s perspective, it’s probably for the best that I was clueless about it. That book was first released in 1987, and it’s still being translated today. But the woman in that house continued to haunt me, and I knew from the beginning of my writing career that I would eventually write about her.
A near escape from life on Arapawa Island is the impetus for the events in The Captive Wife. In 1951, when we met, my husband Ian was teaching at the whaling station. He had to leave, but he intended to come back. I was shocked when he suggested he apply for a job at the school again after we got married. No way could I survive in that setting. I wasn’t scared of the countryside or being alone; I’d experienced both firsthand as a kid.
Rather, I was reluctant to join what I saw as a closed group. But Ian continued to wax poetic about the island, and it eventually took on an air of myth. Then I read about Betty Guard in captivity, and it all made sense: this was a story that encapsulated so many facets of women’s lives, such as settling down in one area, coming into one’s sexuality in unexpected ways, and so on. I felt compelled to document my thoughts about her in writing.
The Boundless Space? This time, a formative experience. When I was a teenager, I moved to Rotorua and got a job at the public library there. People used to come into the library and ask me or the other young women working the desk whether we knew what had become of the aviator Jean Batten because she was born on the street just around the corner. Since she had already begun her long period of reclusiveness in the 1950s, we naturally had no idea. It so happens that she was in the Caribbean at the same time as Ian Fleming and Noel Coward.
It took me a while to realize that Jean had been following in my footsteps; it was a very unfavorable TV documentary about her that finally got my attention. That didn’t jibe with how I pictured Jean at all. Well, I finally gave in because she just wouldn’t stop bothering me. In addition, Ian had learned to fly on Tiger Moths and had a lifelong connection to aviation, which is why he was so knowledgeable about her planes.
You’ll find that, with the exception of The Book of Secrets, I make frequent references to Ian throughout these works. Some people could call us polar opposites, but after 56 years of marriage, I don’t see it as a problem. We have encouraged one another while also giving each other room to pursue our individual interests. Different has been satisfying in its own way; I doubt I would have written the books if I had been in a traditional marriage, but I don’t think there would have been the layers to the work that I’d like to think I’ve done without the marriage we’ve had.
It’s also one of my work’s identifying characteristics, I suppose. Difference. Although I hadn’t given it much attention before, I can now see how often I’ve looked to women whose circumstances differ from my own for motivation. You inquired if I ever had an “aha!” moment that confirmed your subject was the best one. For sure, there was a tipping point when those women and I finally turned around and locked eyes.
