Eugenio González Derbez was born on September 2, 1961, in Mexico City, which is also where he spent his childhood. He began displaying an interest in acting at a young age, and by the time he was 12 years old, he had already landed his first job, working as an extra in soap operas. After finishing his training at the Centro de Educacion Artistica and the Mexican Film Institute, he was offered a position in the Mexican television comedy series “Cachn Cachn Ra Ra!”. This was his first time appearing on television. Immediately after that, in 1997, he directed for the first time a Mexican soap opera called “No Tengo Madre,” which was eventually shown on television.
In addition, he went on to seek a career in filmmaking, earning a degree in Film Directing from the Mexican Institute of Cinematography and Theater in the process of doing so. Today, we celebrate him and everything that he has accomplished. Derbez, who hails from Mexico and is widely regarded as one of the country’s most successful comedy performers and directors, has been in a large number of films and television programs that have received positive reviews. Regular appearances on weekly Mexican television shows were made by him beginning in the late 1980s and continuing into the early 1990s.
Very immediately after that, he began working for a Mexican family that featured and created his own comedy series called “Al Derecho y al Derbez.” It was in the comedy program “Anabel” that he was cast in his first recurring role on television. In the same year that he made his debut in a film that was not in the comedy genre, “Under the Same Moon,” one of his films, “Sangre de mi Sangre,” was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007.
In spite of the fact that he is well-known in Mexico, Derbez did not become well-known in the English-speaking world until he played Felipe in the 2011 film “Jack and Jill” directed by Adam Sandler and starring Katie Holmes, Al Pacino, and Adam Sandler. The film also featured Adam Sandler. In addition, he participated in Patricia Riggen’s film “Girl in Progress” with Eva Mendes, which was also directed by Riggen. Eugenio has performed in productions such as “Latinologues” at the Helen Hayes Theater on Broadway and “Rob!” which airs on CBS.
In 2013, “Instructions Not Included,” which Derbez both starred in and directed, broke many box office records and grossed over $100 million. The film is widely considered to be the most successful film ever produced in the Spanish language in the United States and the rest of the globe. The Spanish-language comedy-drama was an unexpected success, generating $44 million in the United States and earning a spot as the year’s third-highest-grossing film in Mexico, where it made $46 million.
In the film “How to Be a Latin Lover,” which was produced by Lionsgate and Pantelion, Derbez had a role with, amongst others, Salma Hayek, Rob Lowe, and Kristen Bell. In addition, the film was distributed by Lionsgate. 2017 saw the debut of the movie that Derbez and Ben Odell had collaborated on producing. The cast of CODA, in which he appeared as a music teacher, won all three Academy Awards nominations in 2021, including the “Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.” This award was given out in recognition of the exceptional work done by the cast as a whole.
Derbez and his family have made their home in Los Angeles. Alessandra Rosaldo, who has worked in the entertainment industry as an actress, model, and singer, is Derbez’s wife. He is the proud owner of four young children and a bulldog who goes by the name Fiona. During the course of the viewing, it became plainly evident that Zalla, Eugenio Derbez, and the rest of the crew had created something really remarkable. In point of fact, not only did audiences in Park City react enthusiastically to the first showing of Radical, but the film also went on to win the Audience Award for Favorite Film at the Festival.
Radical depicts the narrative of Sergio Juarez, a teacher in Matamoros, Mexico, who is fed up with the conventional education system. This story was inspired by the actual story that was detailed in the Wired article written by the film’s producer, Joshua Davis. He makes the decision to accept a position as a sixth-grade teacher at Jose Urbina Lopez Elementary School, which is known for having some of the lowest-achieving children in all of Mexico.
How does Sergio want to make it different? By abandoning the prescribed course of study and doing all in his power to pique students’ interest and uncover what it is they want to study instead, he will be able to better engage their learning. During their time in Park City to celebrate the film’s big debut at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, Zalla, Davis, producer Ben Odell, Derbez, and two of the film’s young stars, Jennifer Trejo and Mia Fernanda Solis, all stopped by the Collider Studio presented by Saratoga Spring Water to talk about their experiences adapting this hugely inspiring true story for the big screen.
Christopher Zalla, who was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2007 for his film “Sangre de Me Sangre,” is the director of this movie. In a tough school that is more recognized for its strict disciplinary policies than for its emphasis on academic support, Derbez can be seen in the exclusive movie rearranging the physical arrangement of a classroom and removing his own desk. Derbez acknowledges that he is already facing opposition from the well-established faculty, but he wants to experiment with something new.
In conjunction with Epic Magazine and The Lift, the project was created by 3Pas Studios, which is Derbez’s record label and is managed by Benjamin Odell. TelevisaUnivision/ViX provided funding for the endeavor. The film is now looking for distribution all around the globe, with the exception of Mexico. Andrew Herwitz, who is employed by The Film Sales Corporation, is acting as the filmmakers’ representative. It co-stars Daniel Haddad, Jennifer Trejo, Mia Fernanda Solis and Danilo Guardiola.
