Bio

Ernest “Ernie” Sabella is a comedian, voice actor, and actor who works in the United States. He is well recognized for his role as the voice of Pumbaa in the Disney franchise The Lion King, in which he also provided the voice of Baampu. Other roles that he has played include Mr. Bundles in Annie, a car salesman in Quiz Show, Stash in Roommates, and Mr. Petracelli in the episodes of That’s So Raven titled “Mother Dearest” and “Escape Claus”.

Outside of Disney, Sabella is well-known for his appearances on television shows such as Perfect Strangers (1986-1987), A Fine Romance, and Saved by the Bell, where he played Mr. Donald “Twinkie” Twinkacetti, George Shipman, and Leon Carosi, respectively. His acting career on Broadway includes leading parts in productions such as “Guys and Dolls,” “Curtains,” and “Man of La Mancha.”

The Lion Guard is a Disney Junior spin-off, and Sabella is the only actor from the original Lion King series to reprise his part in it (though James Earl Jones did reprise Mufasa in the pilot movie The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar). Sabella was supposed to have a cameo appearance in the 2005 adaptation of The Producers with his co-stars from the film The Lion King, Matthew Broderick, and Nathan Lane; however, the sequences he was supposed to appear in were omitted from the finished product.

Thankfully, Sabella’s moments may still be seen on the DVD, however, they are located in the deleted scenes section. Leslie Hedger took up the part of Pumbaa in Disney’s Extreme Skate Adventure since Sabella did not return to repeat his previous performance in the role. There is no other kind of production trajectory quite like that of a Broadway musical. The personnel who join and leave a production have a direct impact on the show’s development, which requires continual rewriting and retooling.

Once an unending parade of collaborative trials and failures has resulted in a finished product, you are able to present it in front of an audience with the confidence that everyone working on the project is on the same page and working towards the same objective. A lot of the time, individuals are chosen to play roles in a story without having any material prepared for them. This allows the writers to write more particularly to the characters’ skills.

Stephen Sondheim jokes that he won’t write a note for “Sunday in the Park with George” until the show’s cast has been determined in the audio commentary that accompanies the original Broadway production recording of the musical. When developing a character, working with specifics is a very helpful technique. The ability to empathize is undermined by ambiguity and generalizations.

The same is true when it comes to casting and putting together a Disney-animated movie. Since you are just dealing with a pencil and paper rather than people, lighting, a camera, and the myriad of other components that go into producing a live-action picture, you have the freedom to experiment with as many different ideas as you are able to sketch.

When production starts, the narrative you have in mind to convey will almost never end up being the same story that you tell in the completed film. Casting is an essential part of the development of that. It’s possible that the visual model you’ve previously developed won’t work with the voice actor you want, forcing you to go back to the drawing board and look for someone who will work. Because of the different individuals that visit your establishment, you may find that you wind yourself up developing whole new personalities on occasion.

When Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella entered a recording studio together to work on what would eventually become “The Lion King,” this was the situation. Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella were working on a Broadway revival of the classic Frank Loesser musical comedy “Guys and Dolls” in the early part of the year 1992. Rehearsals were taking place. Lane was playing the role of Nathan Detroit, the proprietor of a floating crap game (a character that he named himself after), and Sabella was playing the role of the delightfully named Harry the Horse, one of Lane’s gamblers in tow (a role that I immortalized in a community theatre production a decade ago).

One day when Lane was in the middle of rehearsals for a new Disney movie called “King of the Jungle,” he received a call to audition for the role of a hyena in the movie. In an interview with the Huffington Post, Sabella recalled the time when Lane had proposed that she come into the booth with him during one of the auditions.

In this approach, rather than simply a reader or, worst case scenario, nobody, he would have someone to play off of throughout the moment that involves discussion. Due to the fact that both of them are humorous individuals, during their audition, they began improvising and messing about. Although he seemed to be laughing, one of the film’s filmmakers, Roger Allers, appeared to be more shocked than anything else.

Of fact, the reason Allers was in a state of shock was not that he was appalled by what these men were doing; rather, he was stunned by how well their chemistry flowed together without any hiccups. Disney had always had a concern that “The Lion King” was going to be a little bit too dark, and to offset that gloom, they began crafting the adorable scamps of Timon and Pumbaa. This was done because Disney feared that “The Lion King” was going to be a little bit too dark.
