Emmanuel Jean-Michel Frédéric Macron is a French politician who has been serving as President of France since 2017. He was born on the 21st of December in 1977. In Andorra, Macron is considered to be one of the two Co-Princes of the country. Before that, he served as the Minister of Economics, Industry, and Digital Affairs under President Francois Hollande from 2014 to 2016, and he also served as the Deputy Secretary-General to the President from 2012 to 2014.
In the beginning, he was a member of the Renaissance. After finishing his undergraduate degree in philosophy at Paris Nanterre University, Macron went on to get a master’s degree in public affairs from Sciences Po and a degree in administration from the École nationale d’administration in 2004. Macron was born in Amiens. Following his time spent as a senior public servant at the Inspectorate General of Finances, he went on to pursue a career in investment banking with Rothschild & Co. of New York.
In May 2012, President Francois Hollande appointed Macron to the position of deputy secretary-general of the Élysée. Macron was one of Hollande’s key aides at the time. The second Valls administration appointed him as Minister of Economics, Industry, and Digital Affairs in August 2014. During his tenure, he oversaw a series of measures that were favorable to the industry. In August 2016, he tendered his resignation to start his campaign for the presidency in 2017.
Between the years 2006 and 2009, he was a member of the Socialist Party. In the election, he campaigned under the banner of En Marche, which is a political organization that is pro-European and centrist. He established En Marche in April of 2016. In part as a consequence of the Fillon crisis, which ruined the hopes of the Republican candidate, Francois Fillon, Macron topped the ballot in the first round of voting. He went on to win the election for President of France on May 7, 2017, with 66.1% of the vote in the second round, beating Marine Le Pen of the National Front.
He was the youngest president in the history of France, having taken office at the age of 39. The majority of seats in the National Assembly were won by his party, which was rebranded as La République En Marche! (LREM) for the legislative election that took place in June of 2017. For the position of prime minister, he selected Édouard Philippe. In the year 2020, after Philippe resigned from his position, Macron selected Jean Castex to take his place.
Macron became the first French presidential candidate to win reelection since Jacques Chirac beat Jean-Marie Le Pen in 2002. He was elected to a second term in the 2022 presidential election, defeating Le Pen once again. This made Macron the first French presidential candidate to be president. His centrist alliance, on the other hand, was unable to secure an outright majority in the parliamentary election of 2022, which led to a hung parliament and the installation of France’s first minority administration since the collapse of the Bérégovoy government in 1993.
In May of 2022, Macron nominated Élisabeth Borne to the position of Prime Minister, making her the second female to ever hold the position of Head of Government in the history of France. Borne succeeded Castex as Prime Minister. For the first time, in July 2022, he reorganized the present cabinet, and then for the second time, in July 2023, he did the same thing. During his time in office, Macron has been responsible for several changes to labor legislation, taxes, and pensions, and he has also spearheaded efforts to switch to renewable energy sources.
After being dubbed “president of the rich” by political opponents, the early years of his administration were characterized by an increase in demonstrations against his domestic changes and demands for his resignation. The yellow vest protests and the pension reform strike culminated in the years 2018–2020. Beginning in the year 2020, he was in charge of France’s reaction to the COVID-19 epidemic and the introduction of vaccinations.
The administration of his prime minister, Élisabeth Borne, introduced legislation in 2023 that raised the retirement age from 62 to 64 years old. The pension changes proved to be unpopular and led to strikes and violent demonstrations in the public sector. When it came to matters of foreign policy, he advocated for changes to be made to the European Union (EU) and negotiated bilateral treaties with Germany and Italy.
In addition to overseeing a disagreement with Australia and the United States on the AUKUS security treaty, Macron was responsible for negotiating and executing trade and commercial deals with China totaling 42 billion euros amid the trade war between China and the United States. Additionally, he participated in the international criticism of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and continued Operation Chammal, which was a military operation against the Islamic State.
One can trace the history of the Macron family back to the hamlet of Authie, which is located in Picardy. Among his great-grandfathers on his father’s side, George William Robertson was of English descent and was born in Bristol, which is located in the United Kingdom. His maternal grandparents, Jean and Germaine Noguès (née Arribet), are from the town of Bagnères-de-Bigorre, which is located in the region of Gascony in the Pyrenees.
To pay his grandmother Germaine, whom he referred to as “Manette,” a visit to Bagnères-de-Bigorre was a regular occurrence for him. Macron was baptized as a Catholic at the age of twelve, even though he was reared in a household that did not practice any religion. However, he is now an agnostic. Macron received the majority of his education in the Jesuit-run Lycée la Providence in Amiens. However, his parents arranged for him to complete his last year of schooling at the prestigious Lycée Henri-IV in Paris.
