Her birthplace was the North London Borough of Enfield, where D’Arcy was born. As a result of their participation in a school performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, while they were in the sixth grade, they attribute their first experience with acting to this production.
They received their diploma in 2011 after completing their studies in Fine Art at the Ruskin School of Art via St. Edmund Hall in Oxford. During their stay at the university, D’Arcy and their pals participated in theater on the side. They started as set designers and eventually moved on to performing and directing. There have been several theatrical performances in which D’Arcy has participated. Their first appearances were in Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman at the Oxford Playhouse, Romeo and Juliet at the Southwark Playhouse in London, and Clickbait at Theatre503 in London. Thomas Bailey directed the production of Callisto: A Queer Epic, which took place at the Arcola Theatre in 2016, and D’Arcy performed the role of Tammy Frazier.
Both of them played the role of Bell in the production of A Girl in School Uniform (Walks into a Bar) that took place at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in April of 2017. In the play Against, written by Christopher Shinn and performed at the Almeida Theatre in August 2017, D’Arcy had an appearance opposite Ben Whishaw. Aleks Sierz, writing for the arts section, lauded D’Arcy’s performance as well as the production’s “marvelous moments of wry humor and acute emotional insight.” She also commended the production’s overall quality. As part of Hal Coase’s adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, D’Arcy made her return to the Arcola Theatre in 2018, where she played the role of Lucrezia.
D’Arcy received praise for their “striking” performance, while the production received praise for its visually appealing simplicity and dramatic flare. They were praised for their performance as Elizabeth Proctor, which was described as being both captivating and captivating. Fiona Mountford of The Evening Standard referred to the play as the best depiction of The Crucible that she had ever seen. The show received a lot of praise. In December 2020, it was revealed that D’Arcy had been selected to play the role of Rhaenyra Targaryen in the HBO fantasy series House of the Dragon. This series is a precursor to the Game of Thrones series and is an adaptation of the companion novel Fire and Blood written by George R.. Martin. Although they were aware of Game of Thrones, D’Arcy confessed that they had not viewed the House of the Dragon precursor until after they were cast in the part of Rhaenyra. This was the first time they had seen the Showtime series. They had read Fire and Blood.
April 2021 marked the beginning of production for the series, and August 2022 marked the premiere of the first season, which consisted of 10 episodes. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, writer and executive producer Ryan Condal said that D’Arcy’s Rhaenyra is, in many respects, the most significant character in House of the Dragon. Director Miguel Sapochnik referred to D’Arcy as “the face of the show for the show.”Given the significance of the role, D’Arcy was subjected to a great deal of scrutiny, especially since Milly Alcock’s portrayal of the character when she was younger had been well-received by the audience. D’Arcy’s portrayal of the character, on the other hand, was an immediate hit, which resulted in them receiving worldwide critical praise.
Critics ranked it among some of the greatest performances of the year. “It is impossible to look away whenever D’Arcy’s expressive face is in the frame,” the reviewer Jenna Scherer said in her review for The A.V. Club of the film. In an article that he wrote for Comic Book Resources, Philip Etemesi cited D’Arcy’s extensive expertise in the theater as the reason for their “expert handling of such a complex character.”In addition, Marcus Jones of IndieWire provided an appreciation for D’Arcy’s performance as Rhaenyra, stating that “even though “House of the Dragon” is an ensemble series, viewers can tell just by D’Arcy’s presence that their Rhaenyra is the star of the show.”
GQ magazine paid tribute to D’Arcy in November 2022, recognizing him as one of the most promising new stars in the world. The performance that they gave in the season one finale “The Black Queen” earned them the title of Performer of the Week from TVLine for the week of October 23, 2022. During an interview with Out magazine, Mey Rude made the following statement: “D’Arcy has stepped up to the plate in a role that would make most actors stagger, and as a result, he has become an instant star.”
As a result of their work, D’Arcy was considered for consideration for the Golden Globe Award in the category of Best Actress in a Television Series Drama. The comedy-drama film Misbehavior, which Philippa Lowthorpe directed, featured D’Arcy in a role in March of the year 2020. During the year 2021, they played the role of Emma Hobday in the love drama Mothering Sunday.
