Bio

Ellen DeGeneres, whose full name is Ellen Lee DeGeneres, is a comedian and television personality from the United States. She was born on January 26, 1958, in Metairie, Louisiana, and is best known for her offbeat brand of observational humor. DeGeneres attended the University of New Orleans for a short period, studying communications as her major. As a result of her dissatisfaction with the lifestyle at the university, she dropped out and took a job at a legal office. After that, she worked in various positions, including those of a waitress, bartender, house painter, and oyster shucker.

In the late 1970s, after putting together a comedic routine for a group of friends, DeGeneres was requested to perform in local coffeehouses. This led to the beginning of her career in stand-up comedy. Soon after, she performed in comedy clubs throughout the United States, winning acclaim with her offbeat and naïve anecdotes punctuated by her loose-limbed movements.

The fashions of Mary Tyler Moore and Lucille Ball come to mind while describing her look. Showtime, a cable television network, was particularly impressed with DeGeneres’ performance, and they honored her with the title of Funniest Person of the Year in 1982. In 1986, she was given a huge break when she was asked to perform on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Since then, her career has been going from strength to strength. After DeGeneres’s hilarious performance of “Phone Call to God,” Carson signaled for her to sit down and have a conversation. This was the first time such honor had been bestowed on a female comic.

In addition to doing stand-up comedy routines on television, Ellen DeGeneres has also appeared as a guest star on several other television programs, including One Night Stand (1989), Open House (1989–1990), and Laurie Hill (1992). These Friends of Mine, the sitcom she featured in 1994, was renamed Ellen beginning with the 1995–1996 season. As a result of the show’s popularity, it was nominated for prizes, including the Golden Globe, the American Comedy Award, and the Emmy.

1997 was the year when Ellen DeGeneres came out as homosexual, making it the first time that a leading character on a prime-time television program has been out in the open. Following the cancellation of her nighttime talk show in 1998, Ellen DeGeneres started her daytime talk program, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which ran on syndicated television from 2003 to 2022. During its first five seasons, the program was nominated for and won over 20 Daytime Emmy Awards.

She left the program after only one season, citing that she felt uncomfortable criticizing the talent show’s competitors. It was revealed in September 2009 that DeGeneres would be a judge on the reality series American Idol. DeGeneres departed the program after just one season. Ellen DeGeneres put her experience as an interior designer to use in her program Ellen’s Design Challenge (which aired from 2015 to 2016). She also conceived and coproduced the children’s talent show Little Big Shots (2016– ). After that, she went on to host the television show Ellen’s Game of Games (2017–), in which she chose audience members from her daytime show to participate in various different and often bizarre challenges.

Additionally, Ellen DeGeneres has served as the host of various award programs, most notably the Academy Awards in 2007 and 2014. Ellen DeGeneres: Relatable, her first stand-up comedy special in almost a decade and a half, made its debut on Netflix in 2018. In addition to her work on television, Ellen DeGeneres has had roles in the movies Coneheads (1993), Mr. Wrong (1996), and the animated feature film Finding Nemo (2003), in which she provided the voice of the forgetful but lovable Dory. This blue tang is a type of reef fish. DeGeneres has also hosted her talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which debuted in 2003.

She played the same character again in Finding Dory’s sequel (2016). Her collections of hilarious essays, which were published as best-selling books under the titles My Point…and I Do Have One (1995), The Funny Thing Is (2003), and Seriously I’m Kidding (2007), received widespread critical acclaim (2011). In the illustrated publication “Home,” she detailed the many architectural rehabilitation projects she had undertaken (2015). In 2012, the Kennedy Center gave Ellen DeGeneres the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. In 2016, the United States President presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

In 2020, she was honored with the Carol Burnett Award, comparable to the Golden Globe Award for achievement in television. It was during the broadcast of Ellen DeGeneres’ show from 1995-1998, according to an article reported by History, that both the comedian and her show character came out as homosexual for the first time. Ellen Morgan, the show’s main character, portrayed by Ellen DeGeneres, revealed that she is homosexual during an episode of Ellen that aired on April 30, 1997, and received a great deal of media attention.

The comedian had recently come out a few weeks before this episode was shown. Before the show was broadcast, Ellen DeGeneres publicly acknowledged her sexual orientation by making an appearance on the cover of TIME magazine with the title “Yep, I’m Gay.” Although it was projected that 42 million people would watch the special hour-long show on April 30th, subsequent programs could not maintain ratings.

And by the time the 1997 season closed, the program had been canceled due to its consistently poor ratings. Several well-known actors and actresses appeared in the episode that dealt with Ellen’s coming out. These included Laura Dern, who played the woman Ellen falls in love with, Oprah Winfrey, who played the therapist to whom she revealed her secret; k.d. lang; Demi Moore, Billy Bob Thornton, and Dwight Yoakam.
