Elizabeth Knox Bio

Elizabeth Knox was born on 15 February 1959. She attended and graduated from Victoria University with a degree in English.  After Z-Hour, her debut novel was released in 1987. After Z-Hour is a multi-narrator story about six people who spend time in a house believed to be haunted by the spirit of World War I soldier Mark Thornton.

Both Wellington and the North Carolina Christian colony of White Steppes feature in her second novel, Treasure. The story, which features religious, healing, and romantic elements, was a finalist for the 1993 New Zealand Book Award for Fiction.

Another film set in Wellington, albeit in the long-ago 1940s, is Glamour and the Sea. This mystery story follows a group of New Zealand ladies as they become involved with a group of American guys. It features a number of different time periods, locations, and narrators, all of which are hallmarks of Knox’s storytelling.

In addition to these novels, Knox also published a trilogy of novellas around the same time. The novels Paremata, Pomare, and Tawa are loosely based on the author’s own upbringing and adolescence near Wellington in the late 1960s. In 1998, Victoria University Press released the first edition of The Vintner’s Luck. The narrative follows Sobran Jodeau, a winemaker from the little town of Aluze in Burgundy during the nineteenth century. Sobran’s life is irrevocably altered when a beautiful angel with snow-scented wings named Xas appears to him on a July night.

The Katherine Mansfield Memorial Fellowship from Meridian Energy was awarded to Elizabeth Knox in 1999. This fellowship, awarded yearly to a New Zealand writer, is one of the country’s most prominent literary honors and provides the recipient with the opportunity to live and write in Menton, France.

In addition to the Readers’ Choice and Booksellers’ Choice honors, The Vintner’s Luck took home the Deutz Medal for Fiction at the 1999 Montana New Zealand Book honors. It also made the 1999 Orange Prize shortlist and won the first-ever Tasmania Pacific Region Prize in 2001.

The High Jump: a New Zealand Childhood is a compilation of Knox’s autobiographical works Paremata, Pomare, and Tawa. Knox was honored in 2000 with a Laureate Award from the Arts Foundation of New Zealand, whose purpose is to promote public recognition of the honorees’ achievements on a global scale. “Knox’s achievement is already considered with the breakthrough success of The Vintner’s Luck,” adds Arts Foundation panel member and poet Bill Manhire. We anticipate her rapid rise to prominence on the international literary scene.

A reviewer for the Guardian named Sarah May had this to say about Elizabeth Knox’s Black Oxen: “The new book by acclaimed New Zealand author Elizabeth Knox is as busy as you would expect a novel on the topic of human destiny to be. Black Oxen’s intelligence is both genuine and wholehearted, and it is complex without being overly so. Knox’s expansive imagination and the dogged quest for the truth are on full display here, as they were in The Vintner’s Luck. We live in a four-dimensional, six-sense universe. It’s well worth the risk of taking a leap of faith if that’s what it takes.

Black Oxen is “even more lush, dark, and puzzling” than The Vintner’s Luck, according to the Boston Globe. Knox makes some bold, unsettling claims about how we conceptualize individuality. She can’t get enough of thinking about the mind, and body, and how families shape and define themselves. She has a keen sense of atmosphere and a talent for depicting the telling landscape, despite the fact that her eccentric aesthetic tendencies can be annoying at times. Readers who have the same perseverance and patience as the wretched beasts of Knox’s title will be surprised by the novel’s surprising conclusion and strangely satisfied by the novel’s conclusion.

One-half of the Scottish island of Kissack and Skilling leans historically and geographically towards Catholic Ireland, while the other half looks towards the Protestant north and Scandinavia in the 2002 film Billie’s Kiss. However, Knox argues that fantasies are reflections of reality and so have repercussions. Her vampires, doomed to a life of darkness, present the frightening possibility that progress is the ultimate monster and serve as a reminder that daylight and illumination are not the same things.

Elizabeth Knox’s novel Daylight is a modern-day Northanger Abbey; it’s a fun read that also provides a thoughtful summary and critique of a tired genre. Her work is slow and deliberate, like the nightwalkers themselves. She begs to be read carefully, and rightfully so, because Daylight is inarguably not “just another vampire novel.” The Washington Post. The novel was also a finalist for the 2004 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Book in the South Pacific and South East Asian Region.

In praising Knox, the judges remarked, “Few writers can make the transition from the extravagances of writing for adults to the conciseness necessary when writing for children and young adults, yet Elizabeth Knox has achieved this with Dreamhunter.” The story is very fresh and completely believable, and the writing is excellent. Dreamhunter was chosen as an American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults in 2007. A group of librarians from the American Library Association’s Young Adult Library Services Association put together the annual Best Books list.
