Edward St Aubyn Bio

Edward St Aubyn was born in 1960. He attended both Westminster School and Oxford University’s Keble College. His most recent novel, “Mother’s Milk,” was recognized with the 2006 Man Booker Prize shortlist, the 2007 Prix Femina Etranger, and the 2007 South Bank Show award for literature.

He attended both Westminster School and Oxford University’s Keble College. His work “Mother’s Milk” was recognized as one of the best books of 2007 by the South Bank Show and the Prix Femina Etranger, as well as being a finalist for the 2006 Man Booker Prize. The Betty Trask Prize went to his debut novel, “Never Mind.” Together with “Bad News” and “Some Hope,” this book formed a trilogy that is now known simply as “Some Hope.”

A Clue to the Exit and On the Edge, both of which were finalists for the Guardian Fiction Prize, are his other works of fiction. Despite the fact that most interviews in this current era are conducted through video, I am speaking with the novelist Edward St. Aubyn via telephone because, as his publicist has warned me, “Teddy doesn’t do Zoom.” There’s no way he does. Teddy’s presence in mundane 21st century London, as opposed to early 20th century Russia with his great-uncle Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich or 19th century Britain with his great-grandfather the Liberal MP Sir John St Aubyn, first Baron St Levan, seems to be an administrative error soon to be rectified.

With the cruelty of a real insider, like when he mocks the petty snobbery of social climbers, and the bemusement of one who frequently finds the modern world to be a source of aggravation, he satirizes the follies of the world around him in his works. His fourth Patrick Melrose novel, Mother’s Milk, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2006. Although they did not win the prize, the experience clearly had an impact on him, as he used it to write Lost for Words in 2014. In that book, he describes literary award ceremonies with the bemused horror of an alien observing strange human rituals.

The tension and resolution of his novels are similar. He also fictionalized his own life, from sexual assault at the hands of his father to acute drug addiction in his twenties to apprehensive but loving fatherhood, in the Melrose volumes, among others, and the writing both plunges within and excavates wounds. His writings, however, are not introspective, and the viewpoint frequently shifts amongst many people to form a kaleidoscopic chorus of speech.

That, he adds, is because “my personality was once completely shattered,” and as a result, “my personality is disastrously plastic.” Bad News, the second novel in the Melrose series, illustrates this shattering; the protagonist, Patrick, is high on drugs and is being harassed by a chorus of voices within his head. I’ve patched myself back together, but there’s still some elasticity there; sometimes I can almost hear the characters’ thoughts in my head. That’s exciting on multiple fronts; I might melt.

Because “tree surgeons are amputating the beautiful branches I look at from my bedroom,” St. Aubyn is speaking to me from his west London home’s tiniest room. So I moved upstairs to avoid the chainsaws and not be seen choking up with tears,” he recalls. Even if the tree cutting hadn’t upset him so much, he’d still be on edge because he’s marketing his brand new novel, Double-Blind, over which he labored for seven long years. The five Melrose novels have such a strong pull that my other works may be forgotten. He says, “I knew Lost for Words and Dunbar wouldn’t achieve escape velocity from Planet Melrose.” This is in reference to his novels published after the 2012 release of At Last, the final book in the Melrose trilogy. But I’m holding out hope that Double Blind will.

I’m hoping so, too. Since 2018, when Sky Atlantic adapted the Melrose books into a series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and written by David Nicholls, St. Aubyn has been subjected to endless questions from journalists and fans about his past, no matter how well he wrote about it. St. Aubyn has been talking about Planet Melrose and its ties to his background since 1994, so he would be really appreciative if I sometimes asked him questions about something other than that.

To put it plainly, this is a problem. No other English writer in the last 25 years has savagely pilfered from St. Aubyn’s well of experience and skill. Five of his novels make up an epic tragedy about the Melroses, a family of low-ranking nobles in baroque decay, and they are triumphs of radical style and determination. Both terrifying and amusing, these stories have plenty of breathing room, just as great epics should. And the violence they have within them only makes them angrier.

Meeting St. Aubyn in person is a remarkably normal experience. The area of West London with its labyrinth of white limestone buildings makes me feel like Proust was reincarnated in the 21st century as a 55-year-old nobleman. One of these is St. Aubyn’s home. Book tours, advertising, and talking to journalists about, well, how much of it is true are all challenges that Proust never had to face. St. Aubyn has recently returned from a book tour in California for his novel Lost for Words, a comedy about joy and jealousy in the world of literature.
