Dylan McDermott Bio

McDermott was born on October 26, 1961, in Waterbury, Connecticut, as Mark Anthony McDermott, the son of Diane and Richard McDermott. He is the son of Diane and Richard McDermott. Robin, his younger sister, is also a musician. When McDermott was born, Diane was fifteen years old and Richard was seventeen; by 1967, the couple had divorced, and Diane and her two children were living with her mother, Avis (Rogers) Marino, in her mother’s home.

Diane was assassinated on February 9, 1967, in her home. Initial reports stated that Diane’s death was the result of an accident; however, police later stated that the evidence they had discovered was sufficient to pursue murder charges against John Sponza, who was living with Diane at the time of her death. Sponza told authorities that Diane shot herself after picking up a gun he had been cleaning (despite the fact that she was right-handed and was shot in the back of the left side of her head).

Sponza, who police believe had ties to organized crime, was assassinated in 1972; his body was discovered in the trunk of a car in a parking lot outside a grocery shop in Waltham, Massachusetts. Waterbury was the home where McDermott and his sister were nurtured by their maternal grandma Avis.

A youngster, he began making travels to New York City to visit his biological father, who ran the West Fourth Street Saloon in the neighborhood of Greenwich Village. On weekends, the two of them went to see a movie together, while the younger McDermott worked at his father’s bar, serving drinks and breaking up fights.

He would also use his fast-talking skills to get into places like the Mudd Club and Studio 54. “Dorothy Hamill hairdo” was something McDermott disliked about himself as a teenager, according to him. As a result, he began to impersonate his acting heroes, such as Marlon Brando and Humphrey Bogart, and to adopt their mannerisms. McDermott graduated from Holy Cross High School in Waterbury, Connecticut, in 1979.

When McDermott’s father married for the third time, the playwright Eve Ensler (author of The Vagina Monologues) became his legal adoptive mother. She legally adopted McDermott when he was 15 and she was 23. She has since filed for divorce from his father. Ensler, with whom McDermott has maintained a close relationship, encouraged him to pursue a career in acting and began writing roles for him in her productions.

He then graduated from the Jesuit-run Fordham University with a BA in 1983, as well as studying under Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City, the same year as Allison Janney. He married actress Shiva Rose on November 19, 1995. They have two daughters, Colette and Charlotte. Colette’s birth is significantly highlighted in Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues. On September 27, 2007, People revealed that McDermott and Rose had separated.

On May 16, 2008, it was revealed that McDermott had filed for divorce from Rose. The divorce was formalized on January 2, 2009. Having met onset in early 2014, on January 14, 2015, it was revealed he was engaged to his Stalker co-star Maggie Q. In 2017, they stated that they were not in any haste to have a formal wedding ceremony. After a four-year engagement, the pair announced their separation in February 2019. Several periodicals, including Men’s Health, have highlighted McDermott’s work.

In 1999, he was a nominee for GQ’s “Man of the Year” edition, which was published in the United Kingdom. McDermott is a former alcoholic who is now sober. Since 1984, he has been abstinent. McDermott made his feature film debut in Hamburger Hill in 1987 before going on to perform in Steel Magnolias in 1989, in which he played the husband of Julia Roberts’ character, Jackson Latcherie. In addition, he appeared in Twister, a film about a guy who attempts to save his fiancée and daughter from a tornado-induced twister.

The same year saw the release of Neon Empire, a film depicting the rise and fall of a single guy in the Las Vegas gambling industry. However, it was in the film In the Line of Fire that he had his first major break as an actor. As a result of his friendship with Clint Eastwood, McDermott was able to secure his first major role in the film The Practice. He rose to fame as a result of the show, and in 1998, he was named to People magazine’s list of the “50 Most Beautiful People in the World.”

The magazine referred to him as “a prime-time heartthrob.” In 2000, he was awarded this honor once more. Despite his success on The Practice, McDermott was fired from the show after only one season. When asked about the push from ABC to decrease expenditures, executive producer David E. Kelley stated that it was due to “economic and artistic realities.”

McDermott did make a cameo appearance in the final two episodes of the season finale. As an actor, he has appeared in a number of films including The Pang Brothers’ The Messengers (2007), Wonderland (2003), Home for the Holidays (1995), Steel Magnolias (1989), Miracle on 34th Street (1994), In the Line of Fire (1993), and Burning Palms (1993). (2010). McDermott’s television credits include the TNT thriller Dark Blue (2009), which was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer; and TNT’s dramatic limited series The Grid (2004), in which he co-starred with Julianna Margulies.

McDermott made his Broadway debut in Nicky Silver’s “Three Changes” at Playwrights Horizons in 2008. The play, which features Maura Tierney in the lead role, is about an awkwardly married Upper West Side couple. In addition, McDermott appeared on stage in “The Treatment,” a new play by Eve Ensler, which premiered in September 2006. McDermott, a damaged former military interrogator, was the subject of Ensler’s play, which investigated the connection between him and his psychologist Colonel, who was supposed to provide him with routine treatment.

The play served as the opening act for the Impact Festival 2006, a multi-venue arts festival held around New York City as part of the Culture Project. As a result of his performance, McDermott has been nominated for a Drama League Award. Connie Britton and Jessica Lange co-starred with McDermott in the first season of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s FX thriller American Horror Story (2011), which aired in 2011.

McDermott appeared in Jay Roach’s comedy The Campaign (2012), alongside Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis, and was nominated for an Academy Award. McDermott portrayed “Tim Wattley,” a political consultant who is in charge of the campaign of a North Carolina contender for governor. The film, produced by Warner Bros., was released on August 10, 2012.

Along with Logan Lerman (who played the character’s father), Emma Watson, Ezra Miller, and Mae Whitman, McDermott appeared in the independent coming-of-age film The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012), which also starred Logan Lerman (who played the character’s mother). In 2013, McDermott co-starred with Aaron Eckhart and Gerard Butler in Antoine Fuqua’s Olympus Has Fallen (2013), which was directed by the legendary director.

The plot of the film revolved around a former Secret Service agent who becomes America’s sole chance after the President is kidnapped by terrorists and held captive. McDermott’s additional theatre credits include Neil Simon’s Broadway production of “Biloxi Blues” and the Williamstown Theater Festival production of “Golden Boy,” directed by Joanne Woodward. In 2004, McDermott co-starred with Julianna Margulies in the four-part miniseries The Grid, in which he played FBI Special Agent Max Canary, who worked in an anti-terrorist unit for the FBI.

After a long hiatus from the stage, the actor returned in 2006 to portray a returned soldier suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder in the Ensler drama The Treatment. McDermott made his television debut in the series Big Shots, which aired in 2007. Because of low viewership, the show was terminated in January 2008 after only 11 episodes, failing to complete the intended 13-episode season in its entirety, according to the network. As of October 30, 2008, TV Guide was reporting that McDermott was set to co-star with Shannen Doherty in the film Burning Palms, which was set to be released in November 2008. The film is a parody based on Los Angeles clichés that are conveyed through five interconnecting tales.

Initially airing on TNT in 2009, McDermott is a veteran cop who is in charge of an undercover team of Los Angeles Police Department officers in the drama Dark Blue. Each season of the show consisted of ten episodes and the show aired for a total of two seasons. In 2011, McDermott debuted in the FX series American Horror Story as Ben Harmon, a doctor who also happens to be a cheating husband. Because of the anthology style of the series, he returned for the second season as a new character, this time playing Johnny Morgan.

2012 saw him in three films: The Campaign, in which he played Tim Wattley, a campaign manager; The Perks of Being a Wallflower, in which he played the father of main character Charlie (Logan Lerman); and Nobody Walks, in which he played Leroy, a gangster. A deceitful Secret Service agent aids a group of terrorists in their attempt to capture control of the White House, in the action film Olympus Has Fallen, which he co-starred in. Avenue Art Gallery in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, hosted McDermott’s debut photographic exhibition, which was the result of a cooperation with art agency Marina Cutler. The exhibition ran from May 2013 to June 2013.

The exhibition, titled The Dylan Project, Make some Noise!, brought together Dylan’s support for The V-Day Organization and his passion for photography, as the project serves as a means of drawing attention to and raising funds for this organization, which assists women who have been victims of violent acts of aggression in a variety of ways. The Dylan Project will be expanded by McDermott and Cutler to include additional sites. In 2013, McDermott played as FBI agent Duncan Carlisle in the CBS television series Hostages, which ran for a brief period of time.

In 2014, McDermott began acting in one of the lead roles on another short-lived CBS television series, Stalker, in which he played Detective Jack Larsen alongside Maggie Q. In 2015, McDermott began starring in another short-lived CBS television series, The Walking Dead. In 2019, McDermott appeared in an episode of The Politician, in which he co-starred with January Jones and played the father of Lucy Boynton’s character. In 2020, McDermott will feature in Hollywood, a Netflix limited series that will premiere 2020.
