With the Supremes, a vocal group that evolved from struggling aspirants to Motown pioneers to one of the most well-known musical acts ever, Diana Ross achieved stardom. He took pleasure in approximately two dozen solo Top 40 hit singles after leaving the group in 1970. “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, “Love Hangover”, “Upside Down”, and “Endless Love” are a few well-known chart-topping songs. Ross has always sounded connected to her subject while displaying perseverance in even the most unsettling romantic scenes in her extensive repertoire. Ross was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Recording Academy. She has been nominated for a Grammy and an Oscar for her performance in Lady Sings the Blues. In addition to releasing her 25th solo album, Thank You, in 2021, Diana Ross also published the documentary Diana Ross: Her Life, Love, and Legacy in 2019. Diane Ernestine Earle Ross was reared in Detroit, with the exception of a brief period spent in Bessemer, Alabama.
In 1959, soon after her family had relocated to the city’s Brewster-Douglass Housing Projects, she joined the Primettes, who later changed their name to the Supremes. Starting with “Where Did Our Love Go,” Motown had 12 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 from 1964 through 1969. They continued with “Reflections,” which became an immediate classic, and finished with “Someday We’ll Be Together.” At this point, they were known as Diana Ross & the Supremes. Another Grammy nomination was given to Ross for his second solo number one, this time in the pop category. Live at Caesars Palace, Ross’ first solo concert recording, was released before the love story Mahogany, another big-screen Ross vehicle for Motown. The “Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going)” from the movie received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. HEY, BABY Ross’ yearning vocals and innate theatricality blend well with disco. Ross was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 together with Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson, the other members of the Supremes.
A Top Ten R&B hit the title song. Ross’s long-lasting partnership with producer Peter Asher began with The Force Behind the Power (1991), but she continued to focus on the charts throughout the decade by working with both established studio veterans and up-and-coming hitmakers, such as Al B. Sure! and Chuckii Booker, as well as Arif Mardin and Nick Martinelli. This song also marked Ross’s final Top Ten R&B hit. It began with Ross, Lynda Laurence, and Scherrie Payne on a Supremes tour, and it finished with a slew of prestigious solo performances and accolades. Ross performed “God Bless America” at both the 2001 U.S. Open women’s singles final and the Shea Stadium debut of a major league baseball game in New York following the September 11 terrorist attacks. The standards-focused project Blue, which was supposed to be the sequel to Lady Sings the Blues, was put on hold for three and a half decades. Ross released his first studio album in seven years, I Love You, in 2006.
The set featured renditions of well-known love songs by Heatwave, Burt Bacharach, and Hal David. Ross got Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Recording Academy and BET after receiving the Kennedy Center Honors. In the 2010s, Ross undertook a protracted tour that included three Las Vegas residencies.Ross released two additional studio albums through the end of the 1990s, Take Me Higher and Every Day Is a New Day, but she spent the rest of the decade effectively establishing herself as a legacy performer. With a Ritz Theatre performance that was captured on camera as Stolen Moments: The Lady Sings…Jazz and Blues, she celebrated the 20th anniversary of Lady Sings the Blues. Just three weeks later, she recorded Christmas in Vienna with Plácido Domingo and José Carreras. One Woman: The Ultimate Collection, the box’s compilation, peaked in the UK pop charts and achieved quadruple platinum status.
The co-written film with Richard Perry, Baby, It’s Me, was released just before the Pointer Sisters were brought back to life by the producer. One of the album’s three top-charting A-sides, “Your Love Is So Good for Me,” brought Ross another Grammy nomination for best performance. Both new recordings and restored copies of previously unheard material from earlier in the decade were included on Ross. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is retold in Boss The Wiz, a loose film adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name. It was another Motown production that became increasingly popular both critically and commercially.
The Supremes eventually rose to prominence as one of music’s most lucrative acts. In order to pursue a solo career, Diana Ross Ross quit the Supremes in January 1970. Diana Ross was made available by Motown in June of that year. Writing and producing credit for “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand)” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” goes to Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson.
For the latter A-side, Ross received a Grammy nomination for Best Female Contemporary Vocal Performance. The chart-topping soundtrack for the Motown-produced movie of the same name, Lady Sings the Blues (1972), quickly came after. Billie Holiday was portrayed by Ross, who was nominated for an Academy Award. The following three albums from 1973 were Morning Touch Touch Me in the Morning, Diana & Marvin, and Last Time I Saw Him. The biggest hit of the three was “Touch Me in the Morning” by Michael Masser and Ron Miller.
