Bio

Popular English actor Dev Patel is perhaps most recognised for his part in the Oscar-winning picture “Slum Dog Millionaire.” In 2007, he made his acting debut in the British television drama series “Skins,” portraying a Pakistani adolescent experiencing life in England. This actor, who had no formal training nor expertise in the field, was cast in the part. In 2008, he shot to stardom when he was cast as Jamal Malik in the Oscar-winning picture Slum Dog Millionaire. Patel’s performance in the film earned him nominations for both the “BAFTA Award” for “Best Actor” and the “SAG Award” for “Best Supporting Actor.”

An “Oscar” for “Best Picture” was among the many accolades this film eventually received. Patel’s acting career was launched successfully because of his performance in the film. After that, he continued his acting career with roles in films including “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” “Chappie,” and “The Last Airbender,” a blockbuster action-adventure fantasy picture. He has accomplished a lot for someone so young, but he seems genuinely humble and appreciative of his accomplishments. He credits his mom with much of his early achievements because of everything she did for him. He has become a global superstar because of his acting chops, beautiful appearance, and humble demeanour.

Dev Patel was born to Indian immigrant parents Raj Patel, an IT consultant, and Anita Patel, a care worker, on April 23, 1990, in Harrow, London, UK. He went to Harrow’s “Longfield Primary School.” As a student at “Longfield,” he was very involved in the school’s theatrical programme and had several opportunities to perform.

Not only was he a star student, but he also excelled in a number of extracurricular activities. Patel, who would later describe himself as “bloody active,” often misbehaved in class because of it. He began training in Taekwondo in the year 2000 and has since competed often at the national and international levels. He achieved some measure of success in martial arts, earning awards on behalf of his school.

Patel made his acting debut in a school performance of “Twelfth Night,” a play by William Shakespeare. He was deemed the best actor for his portrayal of Sir Andrew Aguecheek. He then attended Whitmore High School, where he maintained his involvement in the school’s theatre programme. His acting chops really shone through, and he impressed the crowd. He finished his Advanced Placement (AP) courses with honours and his General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) in theatre with an A.

His mom noticed a casting notice for the TV show “Skins” during his senior year at “Whitmore.” Even though he had a science test the following day, she accompanied him to the audition nevertheless. Patel was cast as “Anwar Kharral,” a British Pakistani Muslim adolescent after he auditioned for the part on two separate occasions. He said that having never done any acting professionally before, he had no clue what to do on the first day of filming.

Dev Patel began dating Freida Pinto, who co-starred with him in “Slumdog Millionaire,” in 2009. After dating for six years, the pair decided to end their relationship publicly. He is seeing Tilda Cobham-Hervey, an actress from Australia. They were seen out and about in Los Angeles the day after the 2017 “Oscars,” so clearly they are friends. Dev Patel made his acting debut in 2007 on the British TV series ‘Skins,’ where he portrayed the part of ‘Anwar’ for two seasons.

In 2008, the actor’s career took off when he landed the main role in “Slumdog Millionaire,” a film directed by Danny Boyle. Caitlin Boyle, Boyle’s daughter and an avid viewer of the TV show “Skins,” introduced her father to the young actor. Patel, who played the main character in the 2008 Oscar-winning film “Slumdog Millionaire,” had already garnered a slew of accolades before year’s end. There is the “British Independent Film Award,” “The National Board of Review (NBR) Award,” and “Chicago Film Critics Association Award.”

He had a bad role in M. Night Shyamalan’s fantasy picture “The Last Airbender,” released in July 2010. The movie did well at the box office despite getting scathing reviews and being labelled a “critical failure” by several reviewers. Dev was nominated for a Razzie Award as the worst supporting actor. In 2011, he featured opposite Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, and Tom Wilkinson in the British comedy-drama film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. The actor had to undergo voice training for six months to polish the Indian-English dialect since his original English accent was so strong.

The movie became a huge financial success throughout the globe, with its premiere in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK all contributing to its position as one of the year’s top-earning pictures. The picture was well-received by critics, with many praising the actor’s innate comic abilities. He portrayed an upbeat news blogger on ‘The Newsroom’ for three seasons (2012–2014). Simultaneously, he had a role in the drama film “About Cherry,” co-starring James Franco and Heather Graham. ‘Berlin International Film Festival’ 2012 hosted the world premiere of the film. The reviews were mixed, and the box office results were disappointing.

The actor co-starred with Robert Sheehan and Zo Kravitz in the 2014 film “The Road Within.” The film’s unconventional premise—three mismatched pals embarking on a road trip—was a major draw. Some critics called the acting over the top, while others said it was too neat, contributing to the film’s overall mixed reception.

In 2016, he played the title character, Saroo Brierley, in the biopic film Lion. Garth Davis directed the picture, which stars Nicole Kidman and Rooney Mara. Premiering at the 2016 “Toronto International Picture Festival” on September 10th, the film was met with critical acclaim and predictions of an “Oscar” victory. Dev Patel won a British Academy Film Award and was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance as Saroo in the film.

He landed a role in 2018’s “Hotel Mumbai,” an action thriller. The 2008 terrorist assaults on the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai, India served as the basis for the 2009 documentary “Surviving Mumbai.” He portrayed the title role in the 2019 comedy-drama film adaptation of Charles Dickens’s Victorian classic David Copperfield.
