Bio

The Denver Broncos are a professional American football team headquartered in Denver, Colorado, that competes in the National Football League. They are currently a member of the National Football League’s (NFL) American Football Conference (AFC) Western Division, where they play (NFL). The Denver Broncos first competed in 1960. A winning season did not come until 1973 for the team.

Four years later, in 1977, they qualified for the playoffs for the first time in the franchise’s history and advanced to Super Bowl XII as a result of their efforts. Since 1975, the Denver Broncos have established themselves as one of the NFL’s most successful teams, with only seven seasons in which they finished below.500.

It is the first time the team has won the AFC Championship since 1977. They have also won three Super Bowl championships (1997 (XXXII), 1998 (XXXIII), and 2015 (50), and they share the NFL record for most Super Bowl losses tied with the New England Patriots) and eight AFC Championships since 1977.

Thirteen former Denver Broncos players have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including John Elway, Floyd Little, Shannon Sharpe, Gary Zimmerman, Willie Brown, Tony Dorsett, Jerry Rice, Andre Reed, Terrell Davis, Brian Dawkins, Ty Law, Champ Bailey, and Steve Atwater, as well as late club owner Pat Bowlen, among others.

Infancy and Adolescence A founding franchise in the American Football League was handed to minor league baseball owner Bob Howsam on August 14, 1959 and the Denver Broncos were officially established on that date.  On September 9, 1960, the Denver Broncos defeated the Boston Patriots in the first-ever game of the American Football League, 13–10, in Denver.

After defeating the Detroit Lions, 13–7, in a preseason game on August 5, 1967, they became the first-ever American Football League squad to defeat an NFL team.  Overall, the Broncos were a disappointment during the 1960s, compiling a league record of 39–97–4 during that time period. The Broncos’ first superstar, though, was “Franchise” Floyd Little, who played for the team in the 1950s (due to his signing in 1967 and his Pro Bowl efforts

It was a rocky start for the Denver franchise, which only managed to post its first winning season in 1973 after thirteen years of mediocrity. They were the only original AFL team to have never competed in the championship game during the league’s 10-year existence. Denver came dangerously close to losing its franchise in 1965, but a local ownership group stepped in and began the process of rebuilding the team the following year. John Ralston was hired as the head coach of the Denver Broncos in 1972.

Former Stanford University Head Coach Ralston came to the Broncos after a successful tenure with the Cardinal. The following year, 1973, he was named AFC Coach of the Year by the United Press International after Denver completed its first-ever winning season with a record of 7-5-2. When Ralston was with the Broncos for five seasons, he was a part of three winning seasons, which were the franchise’s only three winning seasons up until that point. However, despite finishing the 1976 season with a winning record of 9-5, Ralston was unable to qualify for the postseason, as had been the case in the team’s previous winning seasons.

A number of prominent players publicly expressed their dissatisfaction with Ralston’s leadership following the 1976 season, which eventually resulted in Ralston’s dismissal by the team’s majority owner. With the help of the Orange Crush Defense (a nickname that originated in the early 1970s and is also the name of a popular soda pop), as well as ageing quarterback Craig Morton, the Denver Broncos made their first playoff appearance in 1977 (and ultimately their first Super Bowl appearance, where they were defeated by the Dallas Cowboys, 27–10). Red Miller was the team’s rookie coach.

In 1981, Denver Broncos owner Gerald Phipps, who had purchased the team from its original owner Bob Howsam in May of 1961, sold the team to Canadian financier Edgar Kaiser, Jr., the grandson of shipbuilding industrialist Henry J. Kaiser, for a reported sum of $1.5 million. John Elway, Shannon Sharpe, and Terrell Davis were all-stars in the 1980s and 1990s.

Elway John Action 180-220.jpg is a jpeg image. John Elway is in the thick of things. In 1983, quarterback John Elway became a member of the Denver Broncos. The Baltimore Colts selected Elway as their first overall pick in the 1995 NFL Draft. After declaring his intention to pursue a baseball career (he was drafted by the New York Yankees to play center field and was also a pitching prospect), Elway was traded to the Denver Broncos, who were among the teams on Elway’s trade list.

During the 23 seasons prior to Elway’s arrival, Denver had used over 24 different starting quarterbacks. Elway would go on to be the Broncos’ quarterback for the next five Super Bowls, winning two of them with the team. In addition, he would finish his career as the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XXXIII. After that, he went on to assist the AFC in winning the Pro Bowl, which was her destiny.
