David Koechner is a well-known comedian, actor, and author in the United States. In the Adam McKay-directed 2004 comedy picture “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,” he played the role of Champion ‘Champ’ Kind. In the sequel, “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues,” he returned to his role as Champ Kind.
In addition to his success in movies, he is well-known for his starring parts in popular TV shows, including “The Office,” “F is for Family,” and “Another Period.” Koechner got his start in the industry when he joined the cast of the long-running NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live. After making a friendship with David “Gruber” Allen, he began touring with David as “The Naked Trucker & T-Bones Show,” a live musical comedy act. The performance went viral, opening doors for Koechner to star in major motion pictures and television shows.
David Michael Koechner was born to parents Cecil Stephen Koechner and Margaret Ann on August 24, 1962, in Tipton, Missouri, USA. Koechner was reared with his siblings Mark, Joe, Cecilia, Mary-Rose, and Joan. He continued his education in political science at the fictional “Benedictine College” after finishing high school. Then he uprooted to Windy City to pursue a profession in improv comedy. He trained in improv comedy with renowned teacher Del P. Close at Chicago’s legendary “ImprovOlympic” (iO) theatre and training facility. Later, he became a member of “The Second City,” an improv comedy group.
Cecil Stephen Koechner, David’s father, had a company that made turkey coops. Both of his brothers and his three sisters are very important to him. Additionally, he has many actor buddies, including Steve Carell, Andy Richter, Will Ferrell, and Neil Flynn.
He was married to actress Leigh Koechner on June 27, 1998; the couple now has five kids together. On his right arm are tattoos of his family’s names: his wife’s, his kids’, and his own. Koechner has made a few public appearances with his wife, although he generally avoids publicity for himself and his children.
He maintains a sizable online presence across Twitter and Instagram, where he is followed by the thousands. He also publishes his comedic skits on a channel he is given the same name as on YouTube. He has amassed a large following since the launch of his YouTube account on March 9, 2010. Koechner is a regular at both the “ImprovOlympic” West and “Largo” theatres. His website also has details about forthcoming performances and tours. At the moment, he and his family are based out of Los Angeles, California.
When David Koechner joined the cast of “Saturday Night Live” in 1995, he was one of the show’s first black cast members. During his stint at “Saturday Night Live,” he participated in many memorable sketches, including “Get Off the Shed,” “Bill Brasky,” “Gary Macdonald,” and “Gerald ‘T-Bones’ Tibbons.” Pat Buchanan, William Philip “Phil” Gramm, Charlie Sheen, William Oliver Stone, Burton Leon Reynolds Jr., and Michael Keller Ditka were just a few of the famous people he mimicked.
Starting in 1996, he was a member of the ‘Late Night with Conan O’Brien’ sketch comedy troupe. Koechner partnered with David “Gruber” Allen, whom he had met while working on the sets of “Saturday Night Live,” to create the mockumentary “Dill Scallion” in 1999. Koechner became Gerald ‘T-Bones’ Tibbons on Allen’s “The Naked Trucker Show,” a comedic act. As a result of the act’s success on the Hollywood improv circuit, Koechner was invited to appear on programmes like “Real Time with Bill Maher” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
Meanwhile, he kept appearing in small parts in shows, including “Something So Right,” “Mad About You,” “Freaks and Geeks,” “Greg the Bunny,” “Out Cold,” “Waking Up in Reno,” “American Girl,” and “A Guy Thing.” After years of struggling to break through, he finally found success in 2004 when he was chosen to portray Champ Kind in “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.”
In 2005, he was hired as a recurring character named Todd Packer on the ‘NBC’ network comedy series The Office. A total of 15 episodes (from 2005 to 2013) included his performance as the character. In the computer-animated comedy picture ‘Barnyard,’ directed by Steve Oedekerk, he made his acting debut as the voice of Dag. It was in the 2007 Tom Brady-directed satirical comedy film The Comebacks that Koechner made his debut in the major role. In 2008, he began providing the voices for many characters on the hit cartoon comedy “American Dad!”
He appeared as Grady Funk in ten episodes of the situation comedy series “Hank,” which aired from 2009 to 2010. ‘Final Destination 5,’ a supernatural horror film directed by Steven Quale and starring him as Dennis Lapman, was released in 2011. A comedy picture called “A Good Old Fashioned Orgy,” in which he portrayed Vic George was released the following year.
In the comedic horror film “Piranha 3DD,” released in 2012, he had a significant part. In three episodes of the American-British-Irish animated TV series “Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja,” which aired the next year, he provided the voice of a character called Mac Antfee. In ‘Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues,’ released in 2013, he was seen once again in the character of Champ Kind.
In 2015, he guest-starred on a number of television shows, including “Full Circle,” “All Hail King Julien,” “The Goldbergs,” “Drunk History,” and “Another Period.” The later same year, he also became known as the voice of Robert Pogrohovich on the hit animated situation comedy series F is for Family.
In the 2016 Ben Smallbone-directed romantic drama film “Priceless,” Koechner plays the role of Dale. In the same year, he appeared in guest spots on shows, including “Hidden America with Jonah Ray,” “The Soul Man,” “Tween Fest,” and “Angie Tribeca.” From Bones to Twin Peaks to Future Man to Stan Against Evil to Rhett and Link’s Buddy System, he was a regular cast member in 2017 on a variety of shows.
In 2018, he lent his voice to the character Buzby in three episodes of the animated TV series “Trolls: The Beat Goes On!” After that, he voiced Mr. Meaner in “The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants,” an animated web series. Additionally, in the same year, he voiced Pirate in the animated kids’ TV series “Ask the StoryBots.”
