David M. Axelrod is a well-known political consultant, analyst, and ex-official who worked for the White House in the United States. He was born on February 22, 1955. His role as the top strategist for Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns is what brought him the most notoriety. Axelrod was given the position of Senior Advisor to the President shortly after Barack Obama was elected.

Axelrod made the revelation in an opinion piece he wrote for CNN in 2021 that his father committed himself when the younger Axelrod was 20 years old because he was suffering from severe clinical depression, which the family was unaware of at the time.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, he discussed his decision to enter politics by saying, “I got into politics because I believe in idealism.” Just to be a part of this endeavor that seems to be rekindling the kind of idealism that I knew when I was a kid is a terrific thing to do, and that’s why I think it’s so important for others to get involved. Consequently, I realize that I am becoming really emotional about it. At the age of thirteen, he was already working as a campaign button salesman for Robert F. Kennedy.
Axelrod received his high school diploma from Stuyvesant High School in New York in 1972. The following year, he enrolled at the University of Chicago and pursued a degree in political science there. Although Axelrod defined his boyhood as “very turbulent,” he did not elaborate on the specific events that led to this descriptor being applied to his youth. When Axelrod was a student, he covered politics for the Hyde Park Herald and interned at the Chicago Tribune. Both of these experiences helped him get their respective jobs. In 1977, close to the time that Axelrod was receiving his degree from college, his father took his own life.
At the University of Chicago, he met the woman who would later become his wife, Susan Landau, a student in the business school. Susan was the daughter of the physician and scientist Richard L. Landau, and the couple wed in 1979. The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter, in June of 1981. A diagnosis of epilepsy was made for her when she was just seven months old. According to Axelrod, Lauren has suffered from severe seizures for a significant amount of time, which has required her to be on an ever-evolving drug schedule.
As a result, she was left with a developmental disability; yet, she continued her education in a regular classroom setting. After she graduated from high school, her family had a difficult time finding programs that would keep her happy and fulfilled. In 2002, however, they were able to successfully place her in Misericordia, a big group home that is set up like a dormitory, and she now leads an active life there. In contrast to the prevalent method, which is to move primarily toward smaller group homes, Axelrod supports for a flexible and mixed approach to group homes and support environments for persons like his daughter beginning in 2021.
This is in contrast to the conventional approach, which moves entirely in one direction. There are also two additional Axelrod children in the family. After Axelrod finished his undergraduate studies, he was hired by the Chicago Tribune. He worked there for eight years, covering politics on all levels: national, state, and municipal, and in 1981 he became the organization’s youngest political reporter. At the age of 27, he was promoted to the position of City Hall Bureau Chief at the daily, in addition to being a political writer.
In 1984, he resigned from his position at the Tribune to become the communications director for the campaign of then-U.S. Senator Paul Simon. Within a few weeks, he was elevated to the position of co-campaign manager. Axelrod established the political consulting firm known as Axelrod & Associates in the year 1985. In 1987, he worked on the successful reelection campaign of Harold Washington, the first black mayor of Chicago, while also driving Paul Simon’s campaign for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination. Washington’s reelection was won by a large margin.
This established his experience in working with black politicians, and he went on to become a key player in similar mayoral campaigns of black candidates, including campaigns for Dennis Archer in Detroit, Michael R. White in Cleveland, Anthony A. Williams in Washington, D.C., Lee P. Brown in Houston, and John F. Street in Philadelphia, among others. Axelrod has worked as a strategist for a long time for the former Mayor of Chicago, Richard M. Daley, and he considers himself to be a “specialist in urban politics.” The Economist cites him as an expert in “packaging black candidates for white voters” as well.
Axelrod was brought on board as a media strategist for the almost-official re-election campaign of Oregon Governor Neil Goldschmidt in January 1990. Goldschmidt, on the other hand, made the decision in February to not run for reelection. Axelrod was hired by the Liberal Party of Ontario in 2002 to assist Dalton McGuinty and his party in winning the election that would determine who would lead the province’s government in October 2003. Axelrod’s influence was felt in Ontario through the successful Liberal appeal to “working families” and the placement of an emphasis on positive policy differences such as canceling corporate tax benefits to fund education and health care.
Both of these strategies contributed to the Liberals’ victory. Axelrod was an employee of the presidential campaign of John Edwards in the year 2004. He was no longer in charge of producing advertisements but continued to act as the campaign’s spokesman. Axelrod has said the following in reference to John Edwards’ unsuccessful run for the presidency in 2004, “I have a whole lot of respect for John, but at some point, the candidate has to close the deal and—I can’t tell you why—that never happened with John.”
Axelrod was employed by Exelon, a utility company based in the Illinois area that ran the largest fleet of nuclear reactors in the United States, in the capacity of a consultant. After two high-ranking officials in the administration of longstanding client Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley were arrested for what federal prosecutors described as “pervasive fraud” in City Hall hiring and promotions, Axelrod defended patronage in an opinion piece that was published in the Chicago Tribune. Axelrod’s piece was published after the arrests.
In 2006, he served as a consultant for a number of campaigns, some of which were victorious, such as that of Eliot Spitzer in the race for governor of New York and Deval Patrick in the election for governor of Massachusetts. Axelrod served as the chief political consultant for Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee head U.S. Representative Rahm Emanuel during the 2006 elections for the U.S. House of Representatives, during which the Democrats gained 31 seats. This role was again performed in 2006.
At Northwestern University, where he was an adjunct professor of Communication Studies, he co-taught an undergraduate course on Campaign Strategy with Professor Peter Miller. The course focused on the analysis of political campaigns and the methods employed by candidates running for office. He was presented with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from DePaul University on June 14, 2009, and he spoke at the commencement exercises for both the College of Communication and the College of Computing and Digital Media on the same day.
