The identity of this American comedy actor is not very widely known, but when a spectator sees him on the screen, he instantly says while breaking into a grin, “This is the lanky thief, Marvin, in the Christmas comedies Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.” Indeed, as a result of these movies, the name Daniel Stern has been synonymous with a single character, and the actor’s resume consists mostly of comedic roles.
Daniel Jacob Stern came into the world on August 28th, 1957 in the town of Bethesda, which is located in the state of Maryland. Both of his parents worked in the field of social work; his father, Leonard Stern, was a social worker, while his mother managed a childcare facility. The Jewish couple brought up their two kids, Daniel and David, and encouraged an appreciation for the creative process and the arts in them. Both Daniel and David knew early on that they wanted to work in the film industry, and as a result, Daniel is an actor and David is a screenwriter.
When Daniel was a student at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, he made it a point to take part in every single one of the school’s theatrical productions that he was eligible for. In the musical Promises, Promises, he had the role of Chuck Baxter, and in Fiddler on the Roof, he portrayed the milkman Tevye.
Stern had already made up his mind to pursue a career in acting when he was only 14 years old, but he was aware that the road to fame was a long one. As a result, he decided to earn some more income to contribute to the support of the family. He worked as an attendant at a gas station, where his duties included pumping gas and cleaning windscreens.
After finishing high school, Daniel learned that the organizers of a Shakespeare Festival in Washington, D.C. were looking for people to serve in various capacities and he applied for a position as a lighting engineer there. Stern did not pursue a career as a lighting engineer, but as a young kid, he was given the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong ambition when he was cast in a small role in the production of As You Like It.
After that, Stern enrolled in acting school in New York City and started appearing in shows both on and off Broadway, including Split, Frankie and Annie, The Mandrake, and The Old Glory, amongst others. Together with the famous actor Bob Gunton, he worked at the Second Stage Theater for a while.
Stern first debuted on the big screen in Peter Yates’ 1979 adolescent drama Breaking Away, which marked the beginning of Stern’s career in the film industry. Daniel, even though it was his first part, played the titular character, who was one of four youths who established their cycling team and challenged the strongest squad at the university. The story is about how they did it.
The young guy was able to break into Hollywood because of the part he played in the movie that ended up winning an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. This was the beginning of a long and successful career for him. During the next 10 years, Stern was consistently in the film industry. Stardust Memories was a comedy-drama directed by Woody Allen, while It’s My Turn was a comedy directed by Claudia Weill. Both were released in 1980. Other notable actors, such as Michael Douglas and Jill Clayburgh, appeared with him in both films.
Stern landed his first adult main role in the year 1982 when he was cast in Barry Levinson’s Diner. Mickey Rourke, Ellen Barkin, Steve Guttenberg, and Kevin Bacon were among the talented actors that appeared in this movie. They all took on the roles of young people who knew each other from school and got together at night at a snack bar. Their lives were fraught with challenges and opportunities. The motion picture was put out for consideration for both the Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award.
After those two years, Daniel made his debut in the horror film genre with the film C.H.U.D., in which he played the role of the Reverend Shepherd, who was in charge of leading the struggle against subterranean creatures. The talented actor collaborated once again with the acclaimed filmmaker Woody Allen in 1986, this time for the comedy Hannah and Her Sisters, in which he starred.
Stern started his career as an actor on television in the middle of the 1980s. After appearing in the television shows Hometown and Comedy Factory, he went on to pursue a career in directing and shot numerous episodes of The Wonder Years (1988–1993), which followed the life of an American youngster named Kevin Arnold. In addition to that, Stern acted as the series’ narrator and contributed his voice for the role.
Before playing the best role of his life as Wet Bandit Marvin Merchants in the family comedy Home Alone, which became one of the best Christmas films of all time, the actor had portrayed dozens of characters in a variety of genres, including action films, comedies, horrors, and dramas. Home Alone is considered to be one of the best Christmas films of all time.
After reading the film’s screenplay, which had been provided to Stern by director Chris Columbus, Stern burst out laughing many times while reading it. The actor instantly consented to take part, and within a short amount of time, both he and Joe Pesci, the actor who portrayed his companion Harry in the film, were already deeply involved in the process of creating the movie. Short Harry stood at 5.25 feet (160 cm), while towering Marv stood at 6.33 feet (193 cm) when Columbus conjured up the humorous idea of criminals inviting the two performers who had a substantial height gap between them.
Nevertheless, there were occasions during the shooting when there was nothing funny to talk about. For instance, Stern, who was deathly afraid of spiders, was forced to perform while wearing a massive tarantula on his face. The actor’s hysterical scream came across as very genuine as a result of this realization.
