On October 29, 1957, in Chicago, Illinois, Daniel Louis Castellaneta was born to Elsie Castellaneta, a housewife, and Louis Castellaneta, an amateur actor, and printer. He was particularly interested in theater and humor and used to take great joy in listening to his father’s old recordings. His mom saw he had a natural talent for acting, so she enrolled him in a class for kids.
After finishing high school at Oak Park and River Forest, he enrolled at Northern Illinois University in 1975. He decided to major in art education with the hope of one day instructing art. He used to use his voiceover skills as a student teacher to keep the class laughing.
American voice actor and comedian Dan Castellaneta is best known for providing the iconic voice of Homer Simpson on the long-running and critically acclaimed Fox animated sitcom The Simpsons.
Many other well-known cartoon personalities, including “Barney Gumble,” “Krusty the Clown,” “Sideshow Mel,” and “Groundskeeper Willie,” have all been voiced by him.
While growing up, Castellaneta would often listen to records of his father’s stand-up routines, which served as a source of inspiration for the future actor. He had always had a passion for performing, but he never considered making it his career. Originally, he wanted to work in education, namely in the field of art education. He could not have stopped acting if he had tried. In 2008, Castellaneta was offered a $400,000 per episode deal for his work on ‘The Simpsons,’ making him one of the highest-paid voice artists in the industry.
Dan Castellaneta began his acting career after graduating from Northern Illinois University in 1979. In 1983, he decided to join The Second City, a Chicago-based improv comedy troupe and began taking classes there. He spent four years in their employ. Castellaneta auditioned for a part on the American TV variety show The Tracey Ullman Show, starring Tracey Ullman, but he failed to impress Ullman. Later, though, Ullman saw one of Castellaneta’s performances in which he portrayed a blind guy. Ullman was so moved by his behavior that she confessed afterward that she had tears in her eyes. Eventually, Ullman cast him in one of her episodes.
During his tenure on “The Tracey Ullman Show,” he oversaw the production of a number of animated segments depicting a dysfunctional family. Rather than casting new voices, the show’s creators asked Ullman to recommend voice performers from her current cast. Castellaneta tried out for the role of “Homer,” but he had trouble keeping the character’s voice as loud as the show’s creators had hoped. He “dropped the voice down” and made it more humorous later on.
People fell in love with his character and his comedy, and he went on to voice other roles in the program. Grampa Simpson, Barney Gumble, Krusty the Clown, Groundskeeper Willie, Mayor Quimby, Sideshow Mel, Itchy, Kodos, Hans Moleman, and Gil Gunderson are just a few of his well-known characters on The Simpsons.
Once upon a time, before a wage dispute in 1998, Castellaneta was making $30,000 every episode. The Fox network threatened to fire everyone on the show. The disagreement was quickly settled, though, and Castellaneta was offered a contract of $125,000 for each episode through 2004. A wage increase had been requested by the actors the previous year, and they got it, to the tune of $250,000 for each episode. Castellaneta’s salary was increased to $400,000 per episode in 2008, making him one of the most paid voice performers in the business. But three years later, when Fox was experiencing a financial crisis, the entire cast and crew voted to take a 25 percent wage cut to keep the show continuing.
Dan Castellaneta is well-known for his voice-acting roles in a variety of series. On the other hand, his breakout role as Homer Simpson in “The Simpsons” cartoon series has been his claim to fame. After nearly three decades, he is now one of the longest-tenured actors in the history of television. He has voiced numerous additional characters on the show, including Homer, and has been honored with four Primetime Emmys and an Annie Award.
When Robin Williams and Disney decided to separate ways, Castellaneta reaped the rewards of the ensuing dispute. In the 1992 film Aladdin, Robin Williams provided the voice for the Genie; however, after a disagreement with Disney, the character was assigned to Dan Castellaneta, who also provided the voice for the Genie in the 1994 TV series Aladdin.
