English bass guitarist Damon Minchella was born on June 1, 1969, in Ince-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. He was a member of the band Ocean Colour Scene from 1997 to 2003. Andy Bennett took his place as a replacement. Up until 2008, he was a consistent member of Paul Weller’s backup band. He also performs with the supergroup The Players and backed The Who at the Live 8 concert in Hyde Park.
Minchella has revealed that he would be recording his fifth solo album with Richard Ashcroft in the fall of 2012, and he is now playing with Trio Valore alongside former Weller drummer Steve White. He is currently a bass instructor in Worcester. He also oversees the Bachelor of Arts in Music program at the ATRiuM at the University of South Wales in Cardiff. The faded Fender jazz bass draped over Minchella’s shoulder was a recognizable image, as were the chromatics and phrasing of his work, which were more typical of jazz than rock. This, however, is precisely what has made him such an intriguing stage presence: a bassist who has played with the likes of Paul Weller, Amy Winehouse, Paul McCartney, Richard Ashcroft, and Oasis.
Because of Steve White’s skill at fusing polyrhythms with hefty funk or rock backbeats, Minchella has worked with him for a long time. Paul Weller, ever the shrewd talent evaluator, wasted no time in signing both individuals to his team. Minchella, however, got his start in the industry in 1987, two years before his big break with Ocean Colour Scene, playing the pub circuit and learning the ropes the hard way.
Ocean Colour Scene, a Birmingham band formed in 1989, offered a refreshing alternative to the ubiquitous Madchester sound. Minchella, Steve Cradock on guitar, Oscar Harrison on drums, and Simon Fowler on vocals made up the original lineup. Minchella recalls that the members of Ocean Colour Scene were well aware of their superior musical abilities to the other Britpop acts of the period. “You know you have a winner if it has a catchy tune and skilled playing. Some musicians aren’t good at writing lyrics, and some writers aren’t great at playing an instrument, but a harmonious combination of the two is always appreciated. So, yeah, we were aware of our own excellence.
He claims that Paul Weller gave the band a significant boost in the early ’90s. Weller had high praise for us. I was 24 at the time, in 1993. At that point, you no longer have the naive confidence of a 17-year-old who picks up an instrument and thinks they’re a rock star. He advised us to go out and strike a bargain. After that, MCA appeared.
The exceptional musicianship of the band is on full display on their second album, Moseley Shoals. “I’d been on the cover of Melody Maker before, but this was like coming down to earth,” she said. We kept on making music not only because we believed in it but also because we refused to give up. We were writing songs that we were confident were good, but we weren’t thinking about how to make a living off of them.
Every one of us had our very own recording booth. Andrew MacDonald, the CEO of Go! Discs provided us with £10,000. Our presentations were really well received by him. So we started recording, and when Brendan Lynch heard about it, he came to assist produce it.
The Riverboat Song was released first because the band members felt it would be more of a message to the underground than a commercial success. We wrongly assumed there was zero possibility of it being heard on Radio 1. We were afraid we’d just have one big hit, but the album’s hidden gems, “The Circle” and “The Day We Caught the Train,” proved us wrong. The time and care put into creating each song give the CD an enduring character. The band’s mentality was fine, but after our early success and years of touring together, it might feel like you’re married to three people at once, which can cause tension. A band’s dynamic evolves with time.
Minchella has avoided rock posturing onstage and the perks of fame, both of which have a way of draining an artist’s passion and creativity if they are allowed to accumulate unchecked. As a result, he has achieved great success as a musician, his approach reminding this critic of the late great James Jamerson of Motown. When we went on, Steve [White] stated, “If we fuck this up, our careers are finished.” In spite of my anxiety, I managed to respond, “This is actually quite foolish.” One should always accept information with a grain of salt. Nonetheless, I had the best beer of my life thereafter.
Minchella’s tendinitis in both hands is a result of his years spent honing his craft on the road with Ocean Colour Scene, Weller, and Oasis. It’s the constant strain of playing and performing. I did five CDs and 200 gigs in 1996. It was the starting point of tendinitis. When, exactly, did he realize that he was more than just good? You have to believe you’re talented at music if you want to play it on stage. Being a musician can be very egotistical.
Minchella, born in West Derby to parents from Avellino, Campania, southern Italy, has retained his cool when many of his contemporaries have lost theirs. He finishes his sentence, satisfied after the Islington show: “It’s inappropriate to idolize musicians since we’re only human beings, after all.” So, what has he discovered during his career? The fact that there is still a lot of work to be done. As you mature, you come to understand the path you wish to take in life. Do something different if you aren’t happy.
