Courtney Barnett Bio

Courtney Barnett was born on 3 November 1987. In 2012, Courtney Barnett, a singer-songwriter, gained widespread attention after releasing her independent EP I’ve Got a Friend Called Emily Ferris. Her signatures include a deadpan conversational tone, incisive lyrics, and a loose, gritty power-trio presentation. It did well in Australia, and her next book, How to Carve a Carrot into a Rose, garnered notice from critics in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, her debut studio album, charted in the top 20 in the US and the top 5 in Australia, and garnered her Grammy and Brit Award nominations. She took home accolades for best female artists and best new artists at Australia’s annual ARIA ceremony. Tell Me How You Really Feel, released in 2018, is her most successful album to date. It debuted at position two on the Australian album chart.

Her next album, titled Lotta Sea Lice, included a partnership with fellow slack rocker Kurt Vile. It was published in 2017 by Matador Records, and it propelled Barnett back into Australia’s top five. Her second solo album, Tell Me How You Really Feel, came out in May of 2018. Her follow-up album, which saw the return of her previous album’s co-producers Burke Reid and Dan Luscombe, opened at #2 in the UK and #22 in the US. Tell Me How You Really Feel won the award for Best Rock Album at the ARIAs that November. Things Take Time, Take Time, Barnett’s third studio album was released in November 2021 and was co-produced by Stella Mozgawa of Warpaint on drums.

At the start of the year 2020, Courtney Barnett was in Los Angeles, while her home country burned and the rest of the globe woke up to a global epidemic. When her tour of the United States was over, she planned to extend her stay in order to compose new material. They “got really wild,” so she headed back to Melbourne. Barnett, who hadn’t had a moment to himself in, well, six years, finally did. From an empty, bewildered room, she explains, “There was a bit of a personal shift of some sort in my brain,” which she says slowly over Zoom.

Barnett’s personal life had been just as turbulent as her professional life before the virus hit. She and Jen Cloher, with whom she co-founded Milk! Records in 2012, are still working together professionally, but they broke up in 2018. Additionally, she says that “some deaths” had occurred, though she does not say who. ‘I was just taking stock,’ she explained.

Barnett frequently pauses throughout her presentations in order to think about the best words to use, and she usually makes broad, sweeping pronouncements. This makes sense intuitively. After the release of her first two EPs and her debut album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, she gained widespread attention and was nominated for a Grammy as the best new artist. She became well-known because she was a regular guest on popular American talk shows.

Songwriting history suggests that many of the songs are likely aimed at Cloher. This is especially true of their second big success Before You Gotta Go. But in brief interludes of speech, Barnett argues that the issue is more general and nuanced than that. She refers to kindness as “one of the biggest unspoken themes of the album,” and she’s right; it applies to everyone. Friendship and moving on from the past are stressed in the song’s lyrics. In my opinion, this should be a global hit. This is a fantastic song and one of my faves of all time.

Barnett says he wrote several songs on the album with the idea of putting a “comforting arm” around a friend. The composer’s home setting may account for some of the muted quality of the music: As the author writes, “I was writing in a flat, so it was kind of quiet because I didn’t want angry neighbors.”

Barnett, though, was also in search of peace and quiet, and she eventually settled on the soothing, repetitive drum machine beats that accompanied her acoustic guitar. While she was home alone, she found solace in the music of Arthur Russell, Leonard Cohen, and Brian Eno. I was making the kind of reassuring, repetitious music that always came to my rescue at the most trying times. Stella Mozgawa, the drummer for the band Warpaint, was emailed the tracks in the hopes of being recruited as a co-producer for the album. It was recorded in Sydney over the summer of 2020-21 without Bones Sloane on bass or Dave Mudie on drums.

She says the live performances are even more impressive. I like the challenge of exploring the numerous possible interpretations of a song. Because of this, it’s likely that they’ll speed up, ramp up their intensity, and become rowdier. However, I aimed for tranquility in the recorded version.

Barnett’s forced stop due to fire and pestilence helped him acquire perspective. Rather than dismissing discussions of thankfulness and appreciation as transitory fads, you had time to give them the serious consideration they deserved. Simply to understand how pivotal those ideas are.

“You seem so stable, but you’re just hanging on / Let go that expectation, change the station, find out what you want,” Barnett croons on the first song, “Rae Street.” Perhaps more than any other song on Things Take Time, Take Time, “Fighting My Way Through the Times” captures Barnett’s emotional state just before returning home, though it could be directed toward anyone struggling to keep up with the times.
