Bio

Conan O’Brien, whose full name is Conan Christopher O’Brien and who was born on April 18, 1963 in Brookline, Massachusetts, United States, is a late-night talk show host and comedian in the United States. He is best known for his roles as the host of Late Night with Conan O’Brien (1993–2009), The Tonight Show (2009–10), and Conan (2010–21).

O’Brien was the third child out of a total of six, and his mother worked as a lawyer while his father was a doctor who practised medicine and lectured at Harvard Medical School. As a kid, he pursued a career in humour and entertainment, participating in tap-dancing classes and writing comic plays.

He showed an early interest in these fields. In 1981, O’Brien became a student at Harvard University, where he focused his studies on the history and literature of the United States. At this time, he contributed to The Harvard Lampoon, the famous humour magazine published by the university. In 1983 and 1984, he was chosen president of The Harvard Lampoon for an unprecedented two consecutive terms.

O’Brien travelled to Los Angeles in 1985, the same year that he received his magna cum laude degree from Harvard, in order to become a member of the writing staff for HBO’s famous news-show spoof, Not Necessarily the News.

He worked as a writer for the show for a total of two years and performed with a number of improvisational ensembles, one of which being the Groundlings. In 1988, he began working as a writer for the late-night comedy programme Saturday Night Live (SNL), where he was responsible for the creation of several well-known recurring characters, including Mr. Short-Term Memory and the Girl Watchers.

In 1989, O’Brien and many other writers from SNL were honoured with an Emmy Award. After his departure from Saturday Night Live in 1991, O’Brien became a member of the writing crew for The Simpsons, a long-running animated television series about an unusual family living in the suburbs.

O’Brien’s ability to combine humour with goofiness was a significant factor in the popularity of the programme, and as a result, O’Brien ultimately became the show’s supervising producer. After David Letterman’s decision to relocate his late-night talk show to CBS in 1993, NBC recruited Conan O’Brien to take up the time slot that was left empty.

The first episode of Late Night with Conan O’Brien aired in September 1993, and it was met with a great deal of criticism from the media. O’Brien was often judged in comparison to Letterman, and his inexperience in his new post, along with his heightened anxiousness, was shown on camera. It was speculated that the show will be cancelled since it received poor reviews from the media and because NBC only offered 13-week contracts to the cast members one at a time.

O’Brien, on the other hand, was able to piece up a faithful following over time. Late Night with Conan O’Brien had the traditional look of a late-night talk show, with O’Brien behind a desk, sidekick Andy Richter (who was with the programme until 2000) helping his jokes along, and a hip band, led by Max Weinberg (drummer for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band), playing in the background. However, O’Brien was just as irreverent and silly as David Letterman was on his show. His material was squarely aimed at the market of individuals between the ages of 18 and 34.

He mixed in recurring comedy bits such as “Audience Hygiene,” “Classic Films Dubbed by Children,” and “Clutch Cargo,” in which O’Brien “interviewed” celebrities whose images appeared on a screen with moving lips superimposed. Triumph, the Insult Comedy Dog, a puppet that was performed by Robert Smigel, was another one of his famous characters. The programme received a number of Emmy nominations and ultimately won one in 2007 for writing. Jay Leno, who had been the host of The Tonight Show for a very long time, made the announcement in 2004 that he was going to leave the talk show in 2009, and O’Brien was picked to succeed Leno.

On February of 2009, the last episode of Late Night with Conan O’Brien was broadcast, and in June of the same year, O’Brien began his tenure as host of The Tonight Show, with Richter once again working with him. Nevertheless, The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien continued to suffer in the ratings, and in January of 2010, rumours began to circulate that Leno would be making a comeback to the show. The subsequent drama was amplified by the late-night comedians engaging in monologue fights with each other, during which they fired jabs at NBC as well as at each other.

Late in the month of January, O’Brien announced his departure from The Tonight Show after contentious discussions with NBC. Leno was brought in to take his position. O’Brien started a live comedy tour in April, despite the fact that the rules of his deal with NBC stipulated that he was not permitted to appear on television for a period of six months. These performances were captured on video for the documentary feature Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop (2011).

It wasn’t until November 2010 that he made his comeback to late-night television, this time as the host of the talk programme Conan, which airs on the cable network TBS. In response to the show’s falling ratings, the formerly hour-long programme was cut down to thirty minutes in 2019, and then it was cancelled altogether in 2021. Around this period, he launched (2018) the popular podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. It has garnered a lot of positive feedback.

O’Brien is most known for hosting talk programmes, although he has also starred in a number of films and television productions, most of the time playing the role of himself. He provided his voice for a number of animated films, one of which being The LEGO Batman Movie (2017), in which he voiced the character of the Riddler, a well-known adversary of Batman.
