Colter Wall is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and musician. He was born on June 27, 1995, in Canada. Wall’s music incorporates elements of country, folk, and Western music, and he is famous for his rough baritone and his ability to write story songs. May 2017 saw the release of his first album, which was simply named, and October 2018 saw the release of his second album, Songs of the Plains. The month of August 2020 saw the release of his third studio album, titled Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs. On July 14, 2023, he released his fourth studio album titled Little Songs. In 2015, Wall traveled to Studio One in Regina, Saskatchewan, to record an extended play titled Imaginary Appalachia. Jason Plumb served as the EP’s producer.
He worked on the EP alongside a number of other Regina-based musicians, including Belle Plaine and The Dead South, among others. He characterized his sound as a combination of blues, folk, and Americana styles of music. On March 9, 2015, the EP was made available for purchase, and “The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie” was issued as his first single at that time. Late in 2015, professional wrestler Brock Lesnar brought further notice to his music by naming him as one of his favorite artists during an interview with “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. This helped his music break through to a wider audience. Several songs from the album were used in the television program “Dog the Bounty Hunter,” as well as in the movies “Hell or High Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” More than a million people have listened to the song “Sleeping on the Blacktop” on Spotify since it was included in the movies. Another usage of the song can be found in the third episode of the first season of the Netflix series “Peripherie.”
In 2016, Wall performed at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville as the opening act for Lucinda Williams. He was given a contract with the American Songs publishing firm owned by Rick Rubin. Dave Cobb served as producer for his first full-length album, which was released under the name Colter Wall and was recorded at RCA Studio A in Nashville. Wall was joined on stage by Cobb, who played the acoustic guitar, Chris Powell, who played the drums, Mike Webb, who played the piano, and Robby Turner, who played the pedal steel. The album was released on May 12, 2017, and according to Wall, the majority of the songs on the album are autobiographical. The album itself was published on May 12. It was reported in July 2018 that his second album, Songs of the Plains, would be published on October 12, 2018, and it was released on that day. Wall made the announcement in June 2020 that his third album will be titled Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs. The album was published on August 28, 2020, via the indie label La Honda Records.
Three of Wall’s songs are included in the fourth season of the Paramount series Yellowstone. These songs include Wall’s original “Plain to See Plainsman” and “Sleeping on the Blacktop,” in addition to a cover of the Rex Allen classic “Cowpoke,” which was released in 1951. The rise to prominence of Colter Wall and his own interpretation of traditional Western tunes is without a doubt one of the most incredible and implausible accomplishments and standards that independent country music has established over the course of the last several years. There was no established market for this kind of music for him to join, no significant fanbase for him to inherit, and no direct forebears for him to ride on, like Tyler Childers and Zach Bryan did with Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers, respectively.
Some people have lamented and criticized the fact that Colter began his career with songs that were more filthy and confrontational, such as “Sleeping on the Blacktop” and “Kate McCannon,” which are, in many ways, still considered to be his defining tracks. Others believe that this demonstrates his lack of sincerity as a cowboy singer, while others desire that he will continue in the same manner. But in 2015, when Colter released his first extended play, he wasn’t even old enough to legally consume alcohol. Even now, he’s just 28 years old. Colter hadn’t quite figured out how to locate himself yet. He discovered who he was by listening to cowboy tunes.
Colter Wall places a high value on genuineness and straightforwardness in expression. The cleverness of his songcraft and the virtuosity with which the songs were composed are not likely to leave you really impressed. These are Western songs, and their appeal lies in the fact that they are simple and traditional in character. The blues sequence that is used in many of Colter’s original compositions, including two new ones that are included in Little compositions, is rather straightforward.
Western music has always been liked by a subset of listeners, but for the last sixty years or so, it has been considered to be a specialty genre. Colter Wall may be the most popular Western singer since Marty Robbins, and he built his career from scratch using the power of his hypnotic voice, which has the ability to transport listeners to a time and place more akin to the subject matter of a Louis L’Amour novel or a Remington painting. Colter Wall has become one of the most popular Western singers since Marty Robbins.
Colter Wall’s new album, titled Little Songs, is a continuation of the second phase of his career, which has been centered around reinterpreting classics from the Western music canon for a new and enthusiastic audience while sliding in his original works in the hope that they will eventually land alongside the old classics in the Western songbooks and recordings of the future. Little Songs is Colter Wall’s fourth studio album, and it was released on March 23, 2019.
Before the release of his third studio album, Little Songs, on July 14, 2023, Wall issued two singles that year under the titles “Evangelina” and “Coralling the Blues.” These singles came out in 2023. When Wall was a kid, his parents listened to country music, so he was acquainted with singers like Johnny Cash and other country performers. At the age of 13, he began studying the guitar and playing the songs of rock bands such as AC/DC, Black Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin. After some time, he began off by listening to vintage blues performers but eventually transitioned into folk music as well.
According to Wall, he first heard Bob Dylan’s song “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” while he was in grade 10 or 11, which corresponds to the ages of 15 and 16, and it motivated him to start composing and singing songs rather than merely playing the guitar. He did this so that he could be more creative. Other early musical inspirations that he acknowledged include Woody Guthrie and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. Additionally, he has indicated an interest in country artists such as Gram Parsons, Townes Van Zandt, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Hank Williams. On his CD titled Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs, he also included a rendition of Marty Robbins’ popular song “Big Iron.”
