Colin Morgan is a Northern Irish actor who was born on the 1st of January 1986. His most notable roles include that of Leo Elster in Humans (2015–2018), Merlin (2008–2012), and Billy Clanton in Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast (2021). In 2007, Morgan made his debut on the London stage playing the titular role in DBC Pierre’s production of Vernon God Little. After that, he made his stage debut in the productions “Todo sobre mi madre” (“All About My Mother”) by Pedro Almodóvar in 2007, “A Prayer for My Daughter” by Thomas Babe in 2008, “Our Private Life” by Pedro Miguel Rozo in 2011, “Step in Time” at The Old Vic 24 Hour Musicals Celebrity Gala in 2012, “The Tempest” by Shakespeare in 2013, and “Mojo” by Jez Butterworth in 2013 and 2014.
Morgan was honored with the “Star of Tomorrow” title by Screen International in July 2008. Due to his work in the television series Merlin, actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan received nominations for Outstanding Actor in a Drama at the Monte Carlo Television Festival Awards in 2009, 2010, and 2011, as well as Best Actor in a Drama Performance for a Male at the National Television Awards in 2013. Morgan was the son of Bernard, a painter and decorator, and Bernadette, a nurse. Morgan was born in Armagh, which is located in Northern Ireland. He is the younger of his two brothers, and their upbringings were identical in that they were both Roman Catholic.
1997 was the year when Morgan first attended classes at Integrated College Dungannon. Morgan starred in a number of performances throughout his time at college, including Surgical Sensations at St. Senapods and Bad Day at Black Frog Creek, among others. In 2004, the Belfast Institute of Further and Higher Education presented Morgan with a National Diploma in Performing Arts after she had completed her studies there. 2007 was the year he received his diploma from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
He was in the penultimate year of his undergraduate program when he was spotted by theatrical director Rufus Norris. He then made the decision to abandon his program three-quarters of the way through in order to make his debut in the professional theatre in London’s West End as the title character in Vernon God Little. The evaluation that Morgan turned in for his final grade took into account the positive feedback he received for his performance.
Morgan was presented with an Award of Distinction from the Belfast Metropolitan College in recognition of his significant contributions to the artistic community in November of 2010.[8In 2007, Morgan made his debut on the professional stage in London, performing as the title character in the production of Vernon God Little that was presented at the Young Vic. The British newspaper The Telegraph wrote that Morgan “captures all the vulnerability, confusion, and gallows humor of the adolescent hero who finds himself at no end of trouble.”
In the same year, Morgan went on to portray the character of Esteban, a young man who aspired to be a writer and was cast alongside Diana Rigg in the stage production of Todo sobre mi madre (All About My Mother) by Pedro Almodóvar. Because of his work in both of these roles, Morgan was considered a candidate for the Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Award for Newcomer of the Year in London in the year 2007.
Morgan was a part of the cast of the Young Vic production of Thomas Babe’s A Prayer for My Daughter in the year 2008. Morgan was praised by The Independent for bringing Jimmy to life with his “twisting, twitching mood-swings and mix of half-druggy cackling punk and half-angelic visionary.” Additionally, the magazine Variety highlighted his “remarkable level of twitchy intensity.”
In 2011, Morgan gave a performance at the Royal Court Theatre as Carlos, a “bipolar compulsive fantasist” homosexual who believes he was molested by his father when he was a youngster. His performance earned positive reviews. Pedro Miguel Rozo’s play Our Private Life was the source material for the production. Step in Time was performed by Morgan on the 9th of December 2012 as part of The Old Vic 24 Hour Musicals Celebrity Gala to raise money for The Old Vic Trust. Morgan portrayed Gary, a flamboyant dance instructor who is attempting to capture the love of one of his students.
In the production of The Tempest that took place at the Globe Theatre in 2013, he played Ariel against Roger Allam’s performance as Prospero. This production was later shown in theatres as part of the Globe On Screen series in May 2014, and a DVD release of the play followed in July 2014. Morgan wanted to bring “ethereal stillness” and “acrobatic precision” to his performance as Ariel in this part, and he set out to accomplish this goal.
The reviewer for the Washington Post stated that he “can’t remember a better Ariel,” and that Morgan’s portrayal was “mysterious, in a way that I’ve never quite experienced before — also wonderfully vulnerable.” Morgan made his debut on the West End in the role of Skinny Luke in Jez Butterworth’s black comedy Mojo, which ran at the Harold Pinter Theatre between 2013 and 2014. The performance of Morgan was hailed by Radio Times as “an accomplished study in human weakness… played with precision and pathos.”
2017 marked Morgan’s return to the London stage, where she made an appearance in the comedic drama titled Gloria, which was written by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. In May of 2018, Morgan made his debut on the stage at the National Theatre in the leading role in the newly mounted production of Brian Friel’s Translations, which was directed by Ian Rickson. Early in the year 2020, he took part in the production of Caryl Churchill’s A Number at the Bridge Theatre opposite Roger Allam. Morgan is best recognized for playing the title role in the British television series Merlin, which aired on BBC from 2008 to 2012.
The story of Merlin follows the exploits of a young warlock who works as Arthur’s servant and as Gaius’ ward. Merlin is forced to develop his magical abilities in secret in order to avoid the scrutiny of King Uther and King Arthur, both of whom disapprove of the practice of magic. The Arthurian legends about Merlin and his relationship with King Arthur served as a loose inspiration for the television show’s plot.

Morgan was nominated for and won multiple acting awards, including the Caron Keating Outstanding Newcomer Award during the 56th annual Variety Club Showbiz Award ceremony on November 16, 2008 (during the beginning of the series) and the Best Actor in Drama Performance: Male award during the 2013 National Television Awards (during the end of the series). Both of these awards were presented by the Variety Club Showbiz Awards.
According to co-creator and executive producer Johnny Capps, it was challenging to find the right person to play the role of Merlin. In an interview from 2011, Capps stated that they needed to find an actor with a wide playing range, someone with a light touch who could deal with both action and magic. “We had to find an actor who has a broad playing range,” Capps added. “We all shared a gut feeling about Colin.
The first time we saw him, we weren’t sure about him, but then we saw him again and again, and then we watched back his final auditions, and we said, ‘He’s ideal for the job.'” Morgan inadvertently obtained a copy of the screenplay pertaining to Prince Arthur before the casting process for the role. He had only five minutes left before his audition to go over the script for the right part.
