Clive Owen is an English actor who has worked in theater, television, and film. He rose to prominence and notoriety after appearing in the television series Chancer, which was produced in the United Kingdom. He was born and raised in England by his mother and stepfather. His father was not his biological father. The emotional highs and lows that he experienced as a youngster and adolescent contributed to the fact that he had a challenging upbringing overall.
Since he was a very early age, he had always shown an interest in performing. A neighborhood youth theater produced many of his plays, in which he had starring roles. Because he was not a very bright student, he made the decision to leave school and look for work instead. After a great deal of effort, he was finally successful in enrolling himself at RADA and began to take the theater more seriously.
After receiving his first major part in the 1990 film “Chancer,” he went on to play a variety of characters in subsequent films, as well as on television and in the theater. Owen has tried his hand at acting in a wide variety of styles and subgenres, including comedies, dramas, thrillers, and horror films, among others. While he was performing in “Romeo and Juliet” at RADA, he first made the acquaintance of his future wife, Sarah Jane.
Together, they are the parents of two girls. Clive Owen’s parents, Pamela Owen and Jess Owen, gave birth to him in Coventry, which is located in the county of Warwickshire in England. When he was just three years old, his mother and him were abandoned by his father, who was a country singer. He was the eldest of his five siblings, and his mother and stepfather were his primary caregivers throughout his childhood.
His stepfather worked for the local railroad as a ticket officer in the area. Owen has never shied away from describing his upbringing as difficult. Owen attended Binley Park Comprehensive School and joined the local theater club when he was 13 years old. His very first performance in a theatrical production was for a play titled “Oliver,” which he performed in.
Owen’s performance commitments began to interfere with his academic performance, so he made the decision to drop out of school and hunt for work to support himself. Owen was given assistance by one of his instructors in the process of gaining entry into Mountview College, which is a theatrical school located in England. But despite the fact that he was accepted into the institution, he chose to work instead of going to school.
Owen searched for a suitable job for a period of two years but was unsuccessful, so he applied for and received assistance from the government. In the meanwhile, he continued to indulge his passion for performing by attending the kids theater at the community center. But in 1984, he made the decision to submit an application to RADA in London.
During his time at RADA, Owen collaborated with other Hollywood actors and actresses such as Ralph Fiennes and Jane Horrocks, amongst others. In addition, he appeared in a play by Howard Barker that was produced at the Royal Court and played the major role. Up until the late eighties, he was involved in significant theatrical productions, including plays such as “Cat and the Canary,” “Henry IV, Part I,” “The Lady from the Sea,” and “Romeo and Juliet.”
He attended RADA at this period. Owen made the transition from the stage to television and film in 1988, appearing in films such as the BBC’s “Precious Bane” and the Channel 4 feature “Vroom.” After then, he began to play roles that were notably larger in films and television shows set in the English language.
Owen landed his first significant role in the year 1990, which was a turning point for his acting career. In the television series titled “Chancer,” he played the part of “Stephen Crane,” which was one of the main characters. It was a television program from Britain that suddenly became an enormous hit, and it happened very quickly.
In 1991, he gave a performance of “Close My Eyes” by Stephen Poliakoff. It was the most controversial character he had ever played in his acting career, and it had an effect on how popular he was with his audience. He portrayed the part of a brother who was forced to play the role of an incestuous lover to his sister.
Owen made his way back to the stage over the course of the subsequent two years, performing in productions such as “The Philanderer” and “Design for Living” with renowned directors such as Brian Cox. Owen did not appear on a major motion picture for a very long period after that. In 1993, Owen appeared in his first American film, which was a war drama called “Class of 61.” In this movie, he portrayed the character of an Irish soldier.
The same year, he also appeared in the film ‘Century,’ which was directed by Stephen Playoff. In 2001, he appeared in the short film “The Hire,” which was produced by BMW and Robert Altman’s “Gosford Park.” Other notable actors, such as Maggie Smith, Helen Mirren, Ryan Phillipe, Kirstin Thomas, and others, also appeared in the film.
Owen landed the lead role in the 2005 film version of “Closer,” which was adapted on the stage play penned by the English dramatist Patrick Marber. Earlier, he had been in the play in a production that was shown on Broadway in London. Alongside him in the film were Julia Roberts and Natalie Portman.
Jude Law also acted in the film. He worked on the production of the American criminal drama film ‘Inside Man’ from 2006 till 2007. He is most known for his work on the remade version of “The Pink Panther,” and despite widespread speculation that he would be the next James Bond actor, Daniel Craig was ultimately selected for the role.
