Actor and director Clinton Eastwood Jr. was born in America on May 31, 1930. The “Man with No Name” in Sergio Leone’s “Dollars Trilogy” of spaghetti westerns during the middle of the 1960s and antihero officer Harry Callahan in the five Dirty Harry movies throughout the 1970s and 1980s propelled him to worldwide prominence after finding success in the Western TV series Rawhide. Eastwood has become a perennial cultural image of masculinity in part because of these roles and others. Eastwood, who was chosen as mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, in 1986, held the position for two years. Ruth and Clinton Eastwood welcomed their son Eastwood on May 31, 1930, at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco, California.
Ruth was known by the last name of her second husband, John Belden Wood, whom she married after the passing of Clinton Sr., during the time her son was famous. Because Eastwood was born weighing just 11 pounds 6 ounces , the hospital staff gave him the name “Samson.” Jeanne Bernhardt, his younger sister, is related to him. He has Dutch, English, Irish, and Scottish heritage. He is the 12th generation to be born in North America and is derived from Mayflower traveller William Bradford. His father moved jobs three times throughout the 1930s, and according to census statistics, the family lived in Sacramento in 1935. They did not migrate between 1940 and 1949, as Eastwood has claimed in media appearances.
The Eastwoods moved to Piedmont, California, where they established themselves in a wealthy neighbourhood, had a swimming pool, joined a country club, and each parent had a personal vehicle. For the most of his career, Eastwood’s father worked for Georgia-Pacific as a manufacturing executive. Ruth began working as a secretary at IBM as Clint and Jeanne became older. Eastwood attended Piedmont Middle School, where he was required to attend summer school because of his poor academic performance. He attended Piedmont High School from January 1945 until at least January 1946, but was asked to leave for, among other offences, putting an offensive suggestion to a school administrator on the scoreboard for the sports field and burning an effigy on the school yard.
He changed schools to Oakland Technical High School, where he was expected to graduate in the middle of the academic year in January 1949, however it is unclear whether he did. “Clint received his diploma from the aircraft shop. Don Kincade, a student, made a joke about the man’s major. I don’t believe he was spending that much time at school since he was having a wonderful time elsewhere, Don Loomis, another high school classmate, said. Eastwood’s childhood buddy Fritz Manes, who is two years Eastwood’s junior, stated, “I guess what happened is he walked off and began having fun. Simply said, I don’t believe he completed high school. According to biographer Patrick McGilligan, high school diplomas are subject to stringent legal secrecy.
The author claims that Eastwood’s school principal had to contact his management before determining whether to do an interview.”Whoever answered the phone at Malpaso urged him against talking to me, and he didn’t,” according to the author. Lifeguard, paper carrier, supermarket clerk, forest firefighter, and golf caddy are just a few of the occupations Eastwood has had. Eastwood said that in 1951 he attempted to enrol in Seattle University but was instead enlisted in the American Army for the Korean War. He often made references to the Korean War in the hopes that others would infer that he had been in battle and may perhaps be a hero.
Actually, during his whole time in the military, he had worked as a lifeguard at Fort Ord in northern California, according to Sondra Locke, Eastwood’s previous lengthy love interest. Don Loomis remembered hearing that Eastwood was dating a Fort Ord officer’s daughter, who may have been asked to watch him when names were called for assignments. He was a passenger on a Douglas AD bomber that ran out of fuel and crashed into the water close to Point Reyes while on route from a scheduled tryst in Seattle, Washington. He and the pilot swam 3.2 kilometres to safety using a life raft.
When Universal-International was filming Rawhide at Fort Ord, a savvy assistant recognised Clint Eastwood and encouraged him to see the director. However, Eastwood’s unofficial biographer, Patrick McGilligan, disputes this. According to Eastwood’s official biography, Chuck Hill, a soldier stationed at Fort Ord with connections in Hollywood, was the crucial player. While Eastwood was in Los Angeles, Hill reconnected with him and was able to get him into a Universal studio where he met cinematographer Irving Glassberg.
Glassberg set up an audition with Arthur Lubin, who, although being highly taken by Eastwood’s physical attributes—he was then 6’4″ tall—and height, disapproved of his acting, saying, “He was pretty unprofessional. He was unsure of what to do, where to go, or how to turn. Lubin arranged for Eastwood’s first contract, which paid $100 per week starting in April 1954, and advised that he take theatre lessons. After signing, Eastwood was at first ridiculed for his rigid demeanour and his longstanding style of speaking through his teeth.
Eastwood was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor and went on to win for his work on the sports drama Million Dollar Baby and the Western Unforgiven. The action comedy follow-up Any Which Way You Can and the adventure comedy Every Which Way but Loose are his biggest box office hits. The Westerns Hang ‘Em High and Pale Rider, the action-war movie Where Eagles Dare, the prison movie Escape from Alcatraz, the war movie Heartbreak Ridge, the action movie In the Line of Fire, and the love story The Bridges of Madison County are some of the other well-known Eastwood movies. The Mule, Cry Macho, and Gran Torino are more recent works. All but four of Eastwood’s American movies since 1967 have been made through his business, Malpaso Productions.
In addition to directing many of his own star vehicles, Eastwood has also helmed movies in which he did not star, including the drama Changeling, the biographical sports drama Invictus, the mystery drama Mystic River. and the war movie Letters from Iwo Jima, for which he received Academy Award nominations. The 2014 combat drama biopic American Sniper broke records at the box office by being the biggest January release ever and Clint Eastwood’s biggest opening weekend.
Four Academy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, three César Awards, and an AFI Life Achievement Award are among Eastwood’s honours. He was given the Golden Lion award in 2000 at the Italian Venice Film Festival in recognition of his lifetime accomplishments. He was awarded the Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1994 and the Legion of Honour medal in 2007. These are two of France’s highest civilian distinctions.
