Bio

Chris Sanders is a voice actor, animator, screenwriter, director, and artist who works in the American entertainment industry. He was responsible for the direction of the movie Lilo & Stitch and performed the voice of Stitch in almost all of the franchise’s western iterations. Additionally, he provided the voice of 627 in the Lilo & Stitch: The Series and Leroy in the Leroy & Stitch animated series. In addition, he lent his voice to the character of Little Brother in the movie Mulan.

Chris Sanders was born into a creative family on March 12, 1962, in the city of Colorado Springs in the state of Colorado. Sanders is the second kid out of a total of three. Sanders was brought up in a home that was filled to the brim with works of art. His family has a history of engaging in artistic endeavors, including painting and sketching. Sanders, on the other hand, found pleasure in composing short tales and discussing them with his loved ones.

After seeing animated films created by Ward Kimball on The Wonderful World of Disney when he was ten years old, Sanders developed an interest in animation. When he was a student at Arvada High School, his talent for telling stories earned him a position as the cartoonist for the school newspaper.

When Sanders first became aware of the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), he did not give much thought to the possibility of earning a career via his artistic pursuits. After submitting an application to the Animation School at CalArts, he was eventually admitted to the program and decided to major in character animation. Sanders received his diploma from CalArts in 1984, having finished his schooling there.

Sanders got his start in the entertainment industry working as a character designer for Muppet Babies. Before he brought Lilo and Stitch to life, he worked on Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Mulan as a storyboard artist, creative director, production designer, and character designer. Lilo and Stitch was the last project he worked on.

On December 16, 2006, many online animation fan sites, one of which being AnimatedNews.com, alleged that Sanders had been ousted by John Lasseter from his position as the director of the forthcoming Disney animated picture American Dog. A subsequent interview with Lasseter conducted by the New York Times showed that Sanders was in the process of negotiating his leave from Disney. Following Sanders’ departure from Disney, Chris Williams took up directorial responsibilities, and the movie’s original working title, Bolt, was changed to reflect the new director’s vision.

Since then, Sanders has been employed by DreamWorks Animation, where he has served as the director of “How to Train Your Dragon” (2010) and “The Croods” (2013), as well as the executive producer of “How to Train Your Dragon 2” (2014) and “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” the sequel to “How to Train Your Dragon” (2019). Sanders had a hand in adapting The Call of the Wild for the big screen while working for Fox; the movie was finally released on February 21, 2020.

Sanders is directing a picture for the Walt Disney Company for the first time since the early 2000s, which is due to Disney’s purchase of 21st Century Fox in March of 2019. The film marks the first time Sanders has directed a feature for Disney since then. Sanders continues to provide the voice of Stitch for any new Disney productions that need it, despite the fact that he is no longer employed by Disney. However, he did not provide the voice for the character in either Stitch! or Stitch & Ai, both of which were made in East Asia. Despite the fact that American animators were involved in the development of the later series, he did not provide the voice for the character.

After finishing “How to Train Your Dragon,” Chris went back to work on “The Croods,” which was first shown to the public on March 22, 2013. Sanders and Kirk DeMicco, who joined the production in the midst of the process, split the directing and writing credits for the film. The movie grossed more than $500 million throughout its lifetime at the box office. After that, Sanders and DeMicco spent the next three and a half years working on the sequel to “The Croods,” until it was finally scrapped in late 2016.

On the other hand, production on the sequel resumed in September 2017, but with Joel Crawford directing it instead of Sanders and DeMicco as previously planned. Sanders and DeMicco were both given credit for the narrative after the release of the sequel, which was given the title The Croods: A New Age. Sanders, though, continued to play the character of Belt throughout the film.

It was revealed in October 2017 that Sanders will be directing a new film version of the book The Call of the Wild, which was written by Jack London in 1903 and published. The film would be produced by 20th Century Fox. The movie, which marked his debut as a director of both live-action and solo projects, was released in February 2020. The movie was met with negative and positive reviews from critics, receiving a 62% approval rating on the website Rotten Tomatoes.

This makes it the least well-received film that Sanders has directed to this point in his career. Additionally, the movie only made $107.6 million on a budget of between $125 and $150 million, making it Sanders’s first directorial box-office bomb. It was announced in February 2020 that Sanders will reprise his role as Stitch in a live-action adaptation of the animated film Lilo & Stitch.
