Bio

Zhou Runfa, also known as Chow Yun-Fat, is spelled in Wade-Gile’s romanization as Chow Yun-Fat. Chou Jun-fa is a Hong Kong-born Chinese actor who rose to prominence in the 1980s as one of the most popular leading men in Asian cinema. He is particularly well-known for his roles in action films, and he later established a successful career in the United States. Chou Jun-fa was born on May 18, 1955, on Lamma Island in Hong Kong.

Chow started taking acting classes after he had previously worked a variety of low-level jobs and dropped out of high school at the age of 17. After some time, he was able to get a contract to appear on television, and by the middle of the 1970s, he had become a star in a soap opera. Due to his popularity on television, movie parts were subsequently offered to him.

In the film Woo Yuet dik goo si (1981; The Story of Woo Viet), which was his debut in the critically praised film industry, he portrayed a Vietnamese refugee who was attempting to enter the United States. As a result of his performance in the moving war drama Dang doi lai ming (1984; Hong Kong, 1941), for which he was nominated for a Golden Horse Award, which is Taiwan’s version of the Academy Award, he was given the award.

In 1986, Chow collaborated with acclaimed Hong Kong action film director John Woo on the production of Yingxiong bense (1986; A Better Tomorrow). The film launched a series of collaborations between Chow and Woo, which included Yingxiong bense II (1987; also known as A Better Tomorrow II), Diexue Shuang Xiong (1989; also known as The Killer), Zongheng Thai (1991; also known as Once a Thief), and Lat sau san team. The film also made Chow a box-office superstar in Asia (1992; Hard-Boiled).

Chow also collaborated with filmmaker Ringo Lam on a number of successful action films, such as Lung fu fong wan (1987; also known as City on Fire), Ban wo Chuang tian ya (1989; also known as Wild Search), and Xia dao Gao Fei (1993). (1992; Full Contact). Chow made the decision to go to Hollywood in the 1990s after Woo and a number of other prominent individuals in the industry of Asian cinema had already established themselves there. In 1995, he directed the Chinese movie Woh Ping Faan Dim (also known as Peace Hotel), and in the same year, he relocated to the United States.

After spending two years learning English and honing his acting skills, he made his debut in Hollywood with the role of a professional assassin in the film The Replacement Killers (1998). In this role, he portrays a character who refuses to complete an assignment and consequently finds himself the target of the assignment. The modest performance that Chow gave was praised by reviewers, despite the fact that the movie was a financial failure. His next role was alongside Jodie Foster in the 1999 film Anna and the King, which was an adaptation of the successful musical The King and I that had been performed on Broadway.

In the year 2000, he received praise for his work as a fighter in the film Wo Hu Cang Long. This film is about the martial art of Shaolin (2000; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). It was a huge success all over the world, and the Academy Award for Best Film in a Foreign Language went to it. The next films directed by Chow were Bulletproof Monk (2003) and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007), both of which were in the English language. In addition, Chow directed the Chinese production Man cheng jin dai huangjinjia (2006; Curse of the Golden Flower).

Later in his career, he appeared in the biopic Kong zi as the philosopher Confucius (2010; Confucius). In the action-comedy Rang Zidan fei (2010; Let the Bullets Fly), which became China’s highest-grossing domestically produced film at that time, and in the espionage noir Shanghai (2010), which was set in the Shanghai underworld of the 1940s, the played roles of mobsters. Both of these films were set in Shanghai.

Chow played the part of political leader Yuan Shikai in the 2011 film Jian dang wei ye (also known as Beginning of the Great Revival), which was a dramatization of the events that led up to the foundation of the Chinese Communist Party. His later films included the musical comedy Hua li shang ban zu (2015; Design for Living) and Mo seung (2018; Project Gutenberg), which was about the mastermind of a counterfeit ring. In Tong que tai (2012; The Assassins), he played Cao Cao, a Chinese general during the Han dynasty. Other later films included Project Gutenberg and The Assassins.

At the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon that took place on Sunday, Hong Kong celebrity Chow Yun Fat was one of the runners that drew the most attention to themselves. According to reports from the Hong Kong media, the 67-year-old participant, who enjoys running and trekking, ran the 10-kilometer event and finished it in 1 hour, 3 minutes, and 58 seconds. After he crossed the finish line, a number of racers rushed up to him to ask for selfies, and the humble actor complied with their wishes.

Chow, who is also known as Fat Gor (which literally translates to “Big Brother Fat” in Cantonese), disclosed to the Hong Kong media that he had prepared for the competition for more than a year and had even worked with a trainer to assist him. He added, “The coach warned me not to go too quickly since there is an incline ahead of us.” I started off the race by jogging slowly and conserving my energy so that I could pick up the pace as we got closer to the finish line.
