Cary Elwes was born on October 26, 1962, in London to a well-known family with a rich history of producing musicians, songwriters, authors, diplomats, priests, and monks. Both his mother Tessa Kennedy and his father Bede Evelyn Dominic Elwes were artists; Tessa was an heiress and a famous interior designer. Their unannounced nuptials in Havana, Cuba made headlines. Cary Elwes was predeceased by his two older brothers, the film producer and artist, respectively, Cassian Elwes and Damian Elwes. From his mother’s second marriage to Hollywood film producer Elliott Kastner, he received two siblings, Dillon and Milica.
Although little is known about his formative years, we do know that he was an altar boy at Westminster Cathedral. Yet, he did not continue the custom of his forebears by enrolling at a seminary. Cary’s parents split up when he was six, and he spent much of his youth bouncing between Spain and London with his mom and dad. Yet, he was raised in London for most part of his youth.
Elliott Kastner served as the groom at his parent’s 1971 wedding. In the future, in 1975, his father committed suicide. He then attended the all-boys Harrow School in London for his secondary schooling. Before moving to the United States of America in 1981, he completed his education at Harrow and studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He got his start in the film industry after his role as the Disco Dancer in “Yesterday’s Hero,” where he also worked as a production assistant.
Upon arriving in the United States, he enrolled in Sarah Lawrence College in New York City to pursue a triple major in the performing arts, philosophy, and history. In the meantime, he started auditioning for parts. He ultimately came across Al Pacino, who advised him that his cruising had become aimless and urged him to do something. A while later, he connected Elwes with his mentor, Charlie Laughton.
While still a student at Sarah Lawrence College, Elwes started taking acting classes with Charlie Laughton at the Actors Studio Inc and the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film School. To support himself, he took up various odd occupations, including those of waiter and busboy. Legendary films like “The Princess Bride” and “Robin Hood: Men in Tights” both featured the English actor and writer Cary Elwes. He was born into a prestigious British family that has provided the world with many outstanding individuals. After finishing high school, this London native enrolled at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
At the age of 19, he uprooted his life and began attending Sarah Lawrence College in New York. When he was cast as a gay student in the movie Another Country at the age of 21, he decided to quit school. After that, he worked steadily, and his breakthrough came with the publication of “The Princess Bride,” which is now regarded as a classic in many fan communities. His other works include Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Shadow of the Vampire, Georgia Rule, and Saw.
Elwes played Lord Guildford Dudley, the husband of Lady Jane Grey, the Nine Days’ Queen, in the 1986 costume drama romance film Lady Jane, which marked his first prominent role in the film industry. He got his biggest break yet because of his performance in the picture, which was met with lukewarm reviews. In the 1987 British film Vladimir Nabokov’s Mashnoka, he portrayed the lead character, Lev Glebovich Ganin.
Rob Reiner, who directed ‘The Princess Bride,’ approached him while he was in Germany filming to cast him as Westley. “The Princess Bride” featured him as a farmhand who aided in the princess’s escape from Prince Humperdinck. He spent three months of his free time learning fencing in order to play the part. The Princess Bride was released on September 25, 1987. Positive reviews far overshadowed the film’s modest box office take. But that didn’t cause an outpouring of audition requests.
He played Maj. Cabot Forbes in the 1990 film “Glory,” which he made an appearance in during the month of February. Towards the end of 1990, he starred in the sports action drama Days of Thunder as Russ Wheeler, a novice driver who becomes the main character’s bitter adversary.
LT Kent Gregory, a role Elwes performed in the 1991 comedy film Hot Shots, is a fan favorite. The following year, in 1992, two more movies, “Leather Jackets” and “Bram Stoker’s Dracula,” were released. His brother Cassius directed the film Leather Jackets, and he worked in the production as an associate producer. Famous for his appearances in The Princess Bride, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and Saw, this British actor has a long list of credits to his name. The title role in Robin Hood: Men in Tights was another one he portrayed. He started working on Stranger Things 3 in 2018.
After a long break, he reprised his role as Lawrence Gordon in the Saw films and Saw 3D: The Final Chapter. It has been suggested that his ancestor, John Elwes, was the model for Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens’s classic A Christmas Carol.
Glory, Kiss the Girls, Days of Thunder, Dracula, Hot Shots!, Twister, The Jungle Book, The Crush, Liar, Liar, and Saw all include him in supporting roles. He has been on numerous TV shows as a reoccurring character, including “The X-Files,” “Psych,” and “Stranger Things,” and in 2019 he became a regular on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
