Marling had a hand in making both “Sound of My Voice” and “Another World,” both released in 2011, in more ways than one. Both were screened at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, with Another Earth taking home the Alfred P. Sloan Award for best film with a substantial scientific, technological, or mathematical subject. Brit’s parents encouraged her to continue her education, and she did an internship at the New York investment firm Goldman Sachs. She turned down a permanent position since she was unhappy in her role. Instead, she hopped a flight to Cuba to finish filming her documentary, Boxers and Ballerinas, with her college roommate turned long-term lover, Mike Cahill.

Exactly what can you get for nothing? Brit and her friend Zal Batmanglij lived like “freegans” for two months in 2009, pitching tents on the street and subsisting on food scavenged from dumpsters. The group’s website calls their manner of living a “total boycott of an economic system where profit has trumped ethical considerations.” According to Brit, “We were young, hungry, and broke, and we desired to understand more about these concepts.” We took the train throughout the nation and stayed at organic farms, where we met members of freegan and anarchist groups.

Mike Cahill collaborated with Brit on 2011’s Another Earth and 2014’s I Origins, and The OA co-creator Zal Batmanglij collaborated with Brit on 2007’s The Recordist, 2011’s Sound of My Voice, and 2013’s The East. Please, Internet, cease your efforts to bring this about. A lot of people would want the talented duo to be a “thing,” but that’s not the case. Brit is currently single, but she has previously dated Mike Cahill, her other colleague. From 2004 to 2012, they were a couple.
