Brian May Bio

Brian May was born on 19 July 1947. Originally from London’s Hampton, The Mays had one son, Brian Harold, and his parents were Harold and Ruth. He started his first band in 1984 with fellow Hampton Grammar School student Tim Staffell. He earned ten GCE Ordinary Levels and three Advanced Levels before enrolling in a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics program at Imperial College London. Brian May is the guitarist for the English rock band Queen and a well-known astrophysicist. He became a legend in the rock music industry, selling more albums than even “The Beatles,” all thanks to his distinctive hairdo that belies the stereotype of a scientist.

May, then just 7 years old, learned to play guitar and formed his first band at school. His friends and family were shocked to learn that his two greatest interests—music and science—complemented each other so beautifully. After the success of his band Queen, he decided to obtain a Doctorate in Astrophysics at Imperial College in London before dropping out halfway through. He contributed to the band by composing music, some of which became hits. Albums featuring May’s guitar work have dominated the charts in both the United Kingdom and the United States. He returned to school after 30 years to earn a doctorate degree and is still actively performing concerts across the world.

May and Tim Stafell, along with Roger Taylor on drums, founded the band Smile in 1968. After Staffell’s departure after only two years, the band broke up. Along with Roger Taylor, he formed the legendary British rock band Queen in 1970 alongside Freddie Mercury and John Deacon. He has contributed vocals to many of the band’s songs and written several of them. Following the success of the 1985 “Live Aid” performance, the band collaborated on the song “One Vision.”

The next year, in 1983, he teamed up with Eddie Van Halen to release Star Fleet Project, his debut solo album. The album Feedback 86 by Steve Hackett features him on guitar. Both “I Want It All” and “Scandal” from the band’s 1989 album “The Miracle” were written by him. In the same year, he also collaborated with bands like “Black Sabbath” and “Living in a Box,” contributing guitar solos to songs on their respective albums. After losing his friend and bandmate Freddie Mercury in 1991, he buried his sorrow by focusing on his job and releasing his solo album “Back to the Light” the following year.

He put together “The Brian May Band” in 1992. Unhappy with the dynamic amongst the team, he shuffled things around the following year by replacing most of the players. May began supplying her talents to film productions in 1995, at the same time she began recording her cover album, Heros. At the Motorhead 25th Anniversary performance, he performed as a special guest alongside Eddie Clarke on the song “Overkill.”

Brian May and Taylor reconciled in 2004 after the band announced a tour with Paul Rodgers, and they went on the road under the moniker “Queen + Paul Rodgers.” For the next two years, the band crisscrossed the globe. After abandoning his Ph.D. in astrophysics to pursue music full-time, he went back to Imperial College London in 2007 to finish it. Paul Rodgers, formerly of Queen, released his debut solo album, The Cosmos Rocks, in 2008. The band then embarked on another globe tour before calling it quits the following year.

For the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards, Queen and Adam Lambert collaborated for a performance. After receiving rave reviews for their 2011 performance, Queen and Adam Lambert went on to do two more gigs in London, then Ukraine, and finally Russia’s capital of Moscow in 2012. Queen had a closing ceremony performance at the London Summer Olympics that same year. Tie Your Mother Down, We Will Rock You, Who Wants to Live Forever, Hammer to Fall, Save Me, Big Bottomed Girls, and I Want It All are just a few of the hit songs on which Brian May played a guitar that helped make him a household name and revolutionize rock music.

In 1974, he wed Chrissie Mullen, and they split up in 1988. Jimmy, Louisa, and Emily Ruth are their three offspring. May reportedly had an affair with Anita Dobson, an actress he later married in 2000, leading to the breakup of his first marriage. May admit that, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, his personal life had spiraled downward to the point where he had a period of depression. He was so hurt and discouraged that he considered ending his own life.

May formed the rock trio Smiles with former 1984 bandmate Tim Staffell on bass and vocals and drummer Roger Taylor through an ad posted on a campus bulletin board. May sign with Mercury Records shortly after graduating from college with honors in physics and mathematics. After many promises, Smile disbanded with only one record and a few unreleased tracks to show for it. Staffell’s buddy Freddie Mercury, though, eventually offered to join the band and perform lead vocals. After a lineup shift, the band adopted the moniker Queen and a new sound that combined hard rock with epic ballads and a flashy glam aesthetic.

During a brief hiatus in 1983, May released the four-song EP Star Fleet Project as a solo artist, and he also co-produced the self-titled debut album by the obscure heavy metal band Heavy Petting. May also make a video guitar lesson for the Star Licks series around the same period, and a public edition of his Red Special instrument was released by the Guild guitar firm.

An Ivor Novello Award for Best Theme from a TV/Radio Commercial was given to May for the song “Driven by You,” which was featured in a Ford vehicle advertisement before it was released as a single. May’s first solo tour occurred after the publication of Return to the Light in 1993, an album that was a moderate success in Europe. The tour was documented in a live album titled Live at the Brixton Academy a year later, which featured both new solo material and classic Queen tunes. May did not release a true studio follow-up until 1998 with Another World.
