Brian Cox is a Scottish actor birth on June 1, 1946, in Dundee, Scotland, whose full name is Brian Denis Cox. He is most known for his role as the authoritarian media magnate Logan Roy in the comedy-drama television series Succession (2018–23). Additionally, he is well-known for his performance as Hermann Goring, the head of the Nazi Party, in the historical drama miniseries Nuremberg (2000). Cox has had a successful career in cinema, theater, and television, where she has a particular talent for portraying nefarious characters.
Cox is the youngest child of Mary Ann Guillerline (née McCann) Cox, who worked in the textile sector, and Charles McArdle Campbell Cox, a supermarket shopkeeper. Cox is named after his grandfather, Charles McArdle Campbell Cox. His grandfather would often aid those in need by extending credit for food purchases to his patrons. Brian Cox was just eight years old when he passed away from pancreatic cancer.
Because the family had no money left, they were forced to live in abject poverty after his death. Cox often found himself where he needed to beg shop owners for any leftover food, such as pan scraps from the neighborhood fish and chip business, to bring it home and eat it for supper. Because his mother had several mental breakdowns, his older sisters were responsible for raising him. Cox dropped out of school shortly before he turned 15 and began running errands and doing chores at the Dundee Repertory Theatre. He also sometimes slept at the theater.
At 17, he was awarded a full scholarship to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, where he remained until he obtained his diploma in 1965. He has said that acting gave him an outlet to escape the difficulties of his complex and solitary upbringing.
Cox debuted on the London stage in 1967, performing the role of Orlando, the sensitive, romantic protagonist, in a performance of William Shakespeare’s comedy As You Like It. The following year, in 1971, he appeared in the historical drama film Nicholas and Alexandra as the revolutionary Russian leader Leon Trotsky. In the 1980s, he began to get regular parts in television and cinema, including a performance as Father Jan Góra in the 1984 television biopic Pope John Paul II.
Five years before actor Anthony Hopkins played the role (now spelled Hannibal Lecter) in the suspense picture The Silence of the Lambs (1991), he portrayed Dr. Hannibal Lecktor in the thriller film Manhunter in 1986. Cox continued to work in the theater and debuted on Broadway in 1985 in a performance of the experimental drama Strange Interlude written by Eugene O’Neill. Both his portrayal as Titus Andronicus in Shakespeare’s tragedy Titus Andronicus in 1988, which earned him an Olivier Award, and his part as King Lear in the Royal National Theatre company’s production of King Lear in 1990, which gained him critical acclaim, earned him praise.
In the middle of the 1990s, Cox made his comeback to the film industry by playing the role of Argyle Wallace, the protagonist William Wallace’s uncle, in the historical drama Braveheart (1995). He then went on to make appearances in films such as the science fiction thriller Chain Reaction (1996), the police action comedy The Glimmer Man (1996), the thriller The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996), the sports drama The Boxer (1997), and the comedy Rushmore (1998). As a result of his depiction of Hermann Goring in the historical miniseries Nuremberg, he was awarded the Emmy for Best Performance in a Miniseries or Movie in the year 2001.
Throughout the 2000s, he proceeded to make guest appearances in a variety of feature films, including the comedic picture Super Troopers (2001), the dramatic film L.I.E. (2001), the espionage thrillers The Bourne Identity (2002) and The Bourne Supremacy (2004), and the supernatural horror film The Ring (2002). In the sports drama “The Rookie,” released in 2002, he played the role of the father of Jim Morris, a middle-aged man who wanted to pitch in Major League Baseball and was portrayed by Dennis Quaid. In the superhero movie X2: X-Men United, released in 2003, Cox is the ruthless Colonel William Stryker.
In the psychological thriller Match Point, directed by Woody Allen and released in 2005, Cox plays the affluent father-in-law of a former professional tennis player. Over the following ten years, Cox’s career continued to pick up steam as he won parts in projects such as the comedy-drama picture Running with Scissors (2006), the Western television series Deadwood (2006), the science fiction feature Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), and the miniseries drama The Slap (2015). Running with Scissors was released in 2006. Deadwood debuted the same year. Cox plays the role of Logan Roy in Succession. Logan Roy is the patriarch of the Roy family and the creator of the media business Waystar Royco. Cox’s portrayal of Logan Roy is a figure who is similar to the media magnate Rupert Murdoch.
The entitled offspring of Roy argue among themselves over who will take control once Dad passes away. Cox has remarked that he can identify with the hard-hearted Roy in a manner, noting that he, too, harbors a lot of anger, partly due to his complex background. The reason for this is because Cox had a difficult upbringing. As a result of his efforts, he was awarded the Golden Globe in 2020 for outstanding performance by an actor in a dramatic television series. In 2022, the Screen Actors Guild presented an award to Cox and the rest of the cast for best performance by an ensemble in a drama series.
