Brett James Bio

Brett James was born on June 5, 1968. However, he spent much of his youth in Del City, Oklahoma. After finishing high school at Christian Heritage Academy in 1986, he decided to pursue his medical education at Baylor University. After seeing Steve Wariner in concert, he decided to abandon his medical studies and focus on his music instead. James moved to Nashville in 1992 and immediately found work with Arista’s Career division after signing a contract with the company. The three songs he released from his Arista debut album—”If I Could See Love,” “Worth the Fall,” and “Female Bonding”—none of them cracked the Country Top 40 on Billboard.

We had to snip one of Faith Hill’s songs. On the other hand, it was also done by Carrie Underwood. Another fantastic illustration is Kenny Chesney. Many talented artists have performed at this year’s Country Music Awards, including Luke Bryan, Keith Urban, Kelly Clarkson, and Meghan Trainor. James’s music has been featured on over 500 albums, with over 110 million copies sold. Twenty-five of them topped the charts. He collaborated on the theme song for the Super Bowl LII television broadcast.

Young people’s dreams don’t die easily. He’s regained the faith of his youth and achieved his ambition, becoming one of the most successful composers of our day. After years of listening to his music, James’ voice has finally been released to the public.

According to the native of Oklahoma, “I don’t think anybody has ever actually heard my true voice.” The music was influenced by the regions of Memphis, Muscle Shoals, and Nashville. James’ vows of intense infatuation and musings on the transformative power of love are bolstered by his signature soul-shouting swagger. James has internalized the gospel-soul sounds of Al Green, William Bell, and Russ Taff throughout his career as a songwriter, and those influences can be heard throughout his new material.

James turned 50 and immediately felt a surge of inspiration, which he channeled into writing new music. The outburst was initiated by the R&B groove of “Right on Time,” which recalls a 1970s Willie Mitchell record for Hi Records.

When James was no longer under pressure to produce work for others, he adopted a more enduring approach to his writing. ‘I’m not going to write about picking up women in pickup trucks at my age,’ he says. Lyrically, it needed to have a more traditional feel. All of them ended up being love songs, though “ideally love songs with a twist, which haven’t all been written before.”

These songs, from the confessional release of pent-up emotion in “I Am Now” to the mid-tempo retro-soul of “Still on My Mind” to the patient passion of the Latin-infused “Wait” to the shared solace in “Lonely Ain’t So Lonely,” a different kind of country drinking song, needed to come from him, even though he could have used the biggest names and the best voices.

After failing to make it big as a neo-traditional country musician in the ’90s, Brett James turned behind the scenes to establish himself as a hitmaker. The post-American Idol smash hit “Jesus Take the Wheel,” performed by Carrie Underwood, was his signature tune as a lyricist. Underwood and James’ careers as Country artists were launched when “Jesus Take the Wheel” spent six weeks at the top of Billboard’s Country charts.

Over the next 15 years, Brett James continued to pen songs for country artists, eventually being named ASCAP’s Country Songwriter of the Year in 2006 and again in 2010. James returned to the stage in 2020 with the publication of the I Am Now EP, and his writing credits include “Bottoms Up” by Brantley Gilbert and “When the Sun Goes Down” by Kenny Chesney.

After Brett James’s career was over in 1998, he was a free agent, but he waited a while before signing a record deal. Mark Bright was given a publication deal by Teracel Music, a new music publishing firm, but he declined. His song “Love Is a Sweet Thing,” written for Teracel, was used on Faith Hill’s massively popular album Breathe from 1999.

James soon established himself as a promising songwriter in Nashville thanks to the success of his songs “Blessed,” recorded by Martina McBride, and “Who I Am,” recorded by Jessica Andrews. This encouraged him to forego medical school in favor of a career in music. Having re-signed with Arista in 2002, he released the song “Chasin’ Amy” and the album “When All” that same year. Since neither of his singles was successful enough to enter the Billboard Top 40, he decided to devote himself entirely to writing. James’ “When the Sun Goes Down” became a long-running number-one hit after Kenny Chesney and Uncle Kracker recorded it in 2004.
