Brent Faiyaz, whose real name is Christopher Brent Wood and who was born on September 19, 1995, is a professional name used by an American R&B singer. After being featured alongside Shy Glizzy on the GoldLink hit “Crew” in 2016, which was later certified six times platinum by the RIAA and got him a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, he shot to notoriety and became a well-known figure in the music industry.
In the year 2021, three of his tracks, “Wasting Time” featuring Drake and The Neptunes, “Gravity” with DJ Dahi featuring Tyler, the Creator, and “Mercedes” all won him spots on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Wasteland, the second studio album released by Faiyaz, made its debut on the Billboard 200 list at position number two.
Brent Faiyaz born Christopher Brent Wood spent his entire childhood in the city of Baltimore in the state of Maryland. Faiyaz began his musical career when he was 12 years old. His parents did not always comprehend his ambitions of becoming a musician, which, according to Faiyaz, was merited because his love for music “always distracted” him. His parents did not always grasp his dreams of becoming a musician.
2014 was the year that Faiyaz first started posting his experimental music to SoundCloud. During that period, he moved away from his childhood home in Columbia, Maryland, and settled in Charlotte, North Carolina, before relocating to Los Angeles, California, in order to advance his profession as a musician. On January 19, 2015, he distributed “Allure,” the first single off his debut album. On June 1, 2016, Faiyaz issued “Invite Me” as the lead single of his debut extended play (EP). The extended play (EP) titled A.M. Paradox was made available for purchase on his 21st birthday, September 19, 2016, and garnered favorable reviews from members of the music press.
In October 2016, Brent Faiyaz collaborated with record producers Dpat and Atu to launch a project under the name Sonder. On October 25, the band shared their first track with the world, titled “Too Fast.” On December 16, 2016, the rapper Faiyaz was featured on the single “Crew” by the rapper GoldLink. He was featured with the artist Shy Glizzy. The debut extended play (EP) by Sonder was titled Into and was published on January 26, 2017. As a result of this release, Duplion selected Sonder as their “Artist of the Month” for January 2017.
On June 6, 2017, Complex placed the extended play at position number 23 on their list of “The Best Albums of 2017 (So Far)”. On June 21, 2017, Faiyaz was included in the reimagined version of GoldLink’s song “Crew,” which also featured Shy Glizzy and featured Gucci Mane as a guest rapper. On March 8, 2019, Faiyaz made an appearance on the track “Demonz (Interlude)” from Juice Wrld’s second studio album, titled Death Race for Love.
On February 7, 2020, Faiyaz released his fourth extended play (EP) titled “Fuck the World.” It reached its highest position on the US Billboard 200 at number 20. The song “Dead Man Walking” was released as a single by him on September 18, 2020, one day before his actual birthday. On January 29, 2021, he made his comeback with a brand new single titled “Gravity.” Faiyaz speaks of “uncertain love and raps in a distilled voice praising loyalty from his female companion” in this song, which was produced by DJ Dahi and features Tyler, the Creator, who contributes a “spacey” verse.
A new song by him titled “Circles” and a video for it were both made available for download on February 8th. He is hard at work on a new album that will be titled Make It Out Alive and is now in the beginning stages of the recording process. The new track “Wasting Time” featuring Drake was released by Faiyaz on July 1, 2021. After this, he made guest appearances on songs from Baby Keem’s The Melodic Blue (“Lost Souls”) and Tems’s If Orange Was a Place (“Found”) albums respectively.
After teasing an upcoming project on Instagram that was going to be dubbed Wasteland, Faiyaz finally dropped the track “Mercedes” on December 3rd. Wasteland, the long-awaited album by Brent Faiyaz, was scheduled to be released on July 8, 2022. In its first week of release, Wasteland would make its debut on the US Billboard 200 list at position number two. Previous works such as “Deadman Walking,” “Gravity” with Tyler the Creator, and “Wasting Time” starring Drake and The Neptunes would be included on the album.
Faiyaz would later refer to the album as a “post-pandemic culmination of thoughts and ideas” and the pandemic as a “Wasteland” in interviews. The album would include well-liked tracks such as “Loose Change,” “All Mine,” and “Jackie Brown,” among others. Faiyaz has mentioned Lauryn Hill as the artist who has had the most impact on him. During an interview with Fact, Faiyaz remarked, “Lauryn Hill was the person who inspired me to start singing from a young age.”
Musical inspiration for Faiyaz comes from the life experiences he has had while traveling the world. Whenever Faiyaz was asked about his creative process on The Angie Martinez Show, he would respond, “Real life inspires me.” A number of other musicians, including Currensy, Lil Wayne, Curtis Mayfield, and Gil Scott-Heron, have been named as some of his primary influences.
