Boomer Esiason is a retired quarterback American footballer and a colour commentator for the current network. Before working as an analyst for ABC and HBO, he has performed for the National Football League’s Cincinnati Bengals, New Jets and Arizona Cardinals. Currently, he is a CBS Sports analyst mainly at The NFL Today and a co-host of the WFAN radio station in New York in the morning and a Westwood One analyst at Monday night. For head coachs Jerry Claiborne and Bobby Ross and offensive coordinator Ralph Friedgen Esiason played college football at the University of Maryland.
He set 17 school records in Maryland. Esia was a double honoured American mention in 1982 and 1983. Esiason completed 461 out of 850 passes (54.2%), with an overall of 6,259 yards and 42 touchdowns. In his final home game he threw two touchdown passes in the third quarter to bring back a win over North Carolina’s No. 3 and scored the title of the ACC. Esiason was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1999 and graduated with a B.A. in 1984. He’s the famous former football players from Terrapin today. In the second round of the 1984 NFL Draft, Esiason was chosen by the Cincinnati Bengals following his last year at Maryland with the 38th overall selection, which was surprisingly small given his good college career.
In the words of Esiason, ESPN draught analyst Mel Kiper Jr. was, “ballistic,” that in its latter phase of the first round it was still available. In the first round there were no quarterbacks drawn; Esiason was indeed the first quarterback chosen, as Steve Young had signed with the now-delayed American League Express. The territorial rights of Esiason’s USFL were controlled by the worst league team, the Washington Federals. The Bengalis took Esiason’s teammate from Maryland in the first round of the same draught, the defensive end Pete Koch, with the 16th pick.
Koch was in Cincinnati for only one season and in NFL for a total of five. He started his first pro in a match against Houston Oilers on October 7, 1984, in Cincinnati. He lead the Bengals to a 13-3 victory over Houston on a rainy day and won the game on a three-yard race. The last game in the season of 1986 was the 21st of December 1986, when Cincinnati shot down New York Jets 52–21 and set a team record of five touchdown passes. In the off-season, Esiason considered retirement but was spoken of playing with Bengals another season.
After replacing Jeff Blake in the middle of the 1997 season, he was surprisingly effective and took only two interceptions for 13 touchdowns and obtained a season rating of more than 106. With Blake in the centre, the Bengals were 3-8. Esiason won four of the last five games with a quarterback and scored more than 30 points four times – twice they broke 40 points with a loss of 44–42 against the Philadelphia Eagles and a loss of 41–14 from Tennessee Oilers.
The Boomer Esiason Foundation has been established to provide funding for research into cures for cystic fibrosis, respiratory and digestive system disease. The Foundation also offers scholarships, transplantation grants, hospital subsidies, education, and awareness of cystic fibrosis in order to provide people with CF with better quality of life. It has raised over 85 million dollars and supported many hospitals, including Gunnars H Esiason CF/Lung Center, and Gunnar H Esiason Adult CF and Lung Program, NYC Columbia Presbyterian.
It has provided CF patients with scholarship subsidies for more than $2 million. During his 1993 Jets Mini Camp Esiason was informed of the breathing difficulty of his twin-year-old son, Gunnar, in the hospital. Shortly after, the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis was made by Gunnar. Soon after the foundation was established, Boomer Esiason. 1996, when the foundations offices were moved into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan, Esiason formed a partnership with Cantor Fitzgerald and Howard Lutnick (CEO).
In the September 11 attacks this was destroyed in 2001. All five full-time staff survived as none was at that time at the building, but Esiason thought that he knew “over two hundred individuals” who were killed in the attack. Boomer Esiason has been named Pro Bowl in four games (1986, 1988, 1989, 1993), with several NFL career records, including the most touchdown passes (247), passing yards (37.920) and completions (2,969).
In 1988 and 1989, Esiason also led the AFC. The NFL Most Valuable Player Award in 1988 (leading the League with quarterback rating of 97,4) is one of Boomer Esiason’s honours throughout his career, and the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 1995 for his charity efforts.
