These subjects included Romantic and Victorian Poetry, as well as New Zealand Literature. Today, Bill Manhire is known as a legendary instructor of creative writing. His well-known Original Composition class inspired many aspiring authors in New Zealand, some of whom went on to become influential figures in the country’s literary scene.

Through the founding of the Master of Arts in Creative Writing program in 1997 and the International Institute of Modern Letters (IIML) in 2000, he made it possible for more aspiring authors to explore their imaginations and work toward a career in writing.  Bill took his retirement in 2012 and afterward earned the title of Emeritus Professor.

Bill was the child of a publican father and a Scottish war bride mother when he was born in Invercargill in the year 1946. His brief memoir, Under the Influence, is a magnificent evocation of the experience of growing up in pubs in Otago and Southland, where he was raised.

The Elaboration, his first collection of poems, was published in 1972. Drawings for the book were done by his good friend Ralph Hotere. He is the author of a large number of poetry books, and he has been awarded the New Zealand Book Award for Poetry five times, most recently for the collection titled Lifted. 2015 saw the release of his collected stories collection. His inventive pursuits cover a mind-bogglingly wide spectrum of activities. In 2006, Bill served as a co-project leader alongside Paul Callaghan for the science-art cooperation titled “Are Angels Okay?,” which was comprised of New Zealand physicists and playwrights. He served as editor for a collection of writings titled “Antarctica.” Along with establishing the online series Best New Zealand Poems, he was also the host of a poetry feature on the Kim Hill Show, which aired on Radio New Zealand for a number of years. More recently, Bill has collaborated on musical projects with composer Norman Meehan and singer Hannah Griffin. These projects have been released. His lyrics have been used on a variety of songs, such as Buddhist Rain, Making Baby Float, and Tell Me My Name, amongst others.

In 2016, BBC Radio 3 gave him a commission to compose a poem in reaction to the Battle of the Somme. He followed through with the assignment. The resulting sequence, titled ‘Known Unto God,’ served as the centerpiece of his collection titled Some Things to Place in a Coffin which was released in 2017.

Bill is one of the few New Zealand poets who has an international reputation, and he is widely regarded as one of the most significant literary figures in the country. His poetry readings are riveting instances of the spoken word, and he appears frequently at literary events both in this country and internationally. Both via the enduring ideas he put into practice on the most effective ways to promote young authors and through the daring creative work he has produced himself, Bill continues to be an inspiration to the IIML.
